82: Yunel ???

I can’t read Buster Olney’s recent article because I am not an ESPN Insider, (nor shall I ever be), but according to sources, Olney says that “the Braves are willing to trade Yunel Escobar for a good hitter”.

escobar

Should we be surprised? Head cases do not last long in the ATL. But is this an indictment of the Braves, or of Yunel? Before you answer that question, let me remind you of Gary Sheffield’s relatively quiet tenure under the tomahawk…

Sheffield

Gary Sheffield made his major league debut with the Milwaukee Brewers on September 3, 1988 at the tender age of 19. While there, he accused the organization of being “racist” and suddenly endured a series of “injuries” to his wrist, thumb and shoulder before being traded to San Diego prior to the 1992 season. While with the Marlins, he publicly stated his unhappiness with landing on an “expansion” team. With the Dodgers, he publicly criticized management, as well as coaches and teammates. He then spent two very quiet years with Atlanta before leaving via free agency for the Yankees. There he publicly criticized both Brian Cashman and Joe Torre before being traded to Detroit. Prior to this season, Detroit released him despite owing him more that $14MM.

The point? Even a guy with the clubhouse reputation of Gary Sheffield can find tranquility in the Braves clubhouse. But apparently Yunel cannot find such solace. Now don’t get me wrong here. I like a player with personality. I like the fire. But fires that burn out of control can do a good bit of damage in their wake. Maybe, I said maybe, it’s time to dig the break.

Now, to the field and the question of how sound a trade of Yunel would be. Obviously, it is impossible to judge without knowing what the return would be, but we are a group of speculators, eh?

So, that being said, if Wren could get a return of a decent defensive SS to go along with that bat, I’d be OK with it. And let’s be clear… the bat should be of the SG defined boppage variety. Nothing less is acceptable. So, to further speculate, if we can add a real bopper to a traditional bopper position, i.e. 1B, LF, RF, and add a decent defensive SS, would that make folks happy? I think so…

And remember – you have to give quality to get quality. No way around it.

Yunel is a special talent. He is a better offensive player than most SS, but not the best. He is above average defensively, but not the best. If you can add a bona fide bopper, and hold the line defensively, I think you are taking a step forward.

What do you think?

You know I have really hated watching Diory bat, but the last few days, who knows…perhaps TP has actually helped a hitter??? His swing looks better, more like a ML swing. He reminded me of the good Andruw Jones on a few of them.

Excellent lead Raisins, as always. Yunel and boppage, hmmm… I’ll have to think on that’un. Seems we’d be better off with a bopper at first base. Either that or move Mac over there and start Ross.

Expecting power from a shortstop is possible but not probable. Do we have a SS in our system?

Wow, this patient may have a pulse after all…. Very entertaining game if you are a Braves fan. Especially after watching this team struggle for the past month or two. Any doubt as to the cause was seen when Kelly waved at three pitches in his only at-bat.

That boy is certifiably lost right now.

The ump did not have a very good command of the strike zone last night. However, he was consistently bad for both teams.

A sweep would really rejuvenate this teams chances.

Yes SG but Javy’s losses came mostly with Kelly Johnson playing second base. The line-up has been somewhat rejuvenated. This is another very big game for the Braves as it would put them in legitimate striking distance of the NL East lead.

A nice 7-3 run between now and the All-Star break would make them serious contenders.

Yep… Huddy goes on injury rehab in mid-July with a target return date of mid-August. That means a return to the rotation about 2-3 weeks past the trade dealine. That means a starter will be traded, y’all. It’ll happen. As with Yunel, you have to give quality to get quality. Pitchers are in high demand. If we want a legitimate bat in the lineup, we’ll have to give up a starter. I can feel it.

We know who it won’t be. It won’t be THanson. It won’t be JJ. It won’t be DLowe. Who’s left? Javy and Kenshin. You can bet there’ll be a market for Kenshin, especially if his next 4 starts mirror his last 4 starts. But there likely would be more teams lining up for Javy. Quality 1-5 in this rotation, to be sure.

We all know how pitchers struggle on their return from TJ surgery. But Huddy doesn’t rely on overpowering stuff. He relies on location. His is an easy delivery. If he starts his rehab on July 19, the Braves will have 3 starts to evaluate before deciding if he’ll return to the rotation. If they think he can… well, you know. Somebody’s gotta go.

    Tough call here.

Major League Baseball has caught another high-profile prospect from the Dominican Republic misrepresenting his age and identity.

MLB’s latest catch is Indians shortstop Jose Osoria, who signed for $575,000 last year on July 2. Indians assistant general manager John Mirabelli confirmed that Osoria’s real name is Wally Bryan and that Bryan is 20 years old, three years older than he had presented himself. Bryan ranked as Cleveland’s No. 30 prospect entering the season. –Baseball America

Good…afternoon! I thought I had posted this am, but must have just read stuff…
V, when I read that the PIRATES had to pay $400,000, half of what is left on Eric Hinske’s salary…to the Yankees!!!!
We are in uncharted territory. No one is going to take Juan Pierre…Dodgers would have to pay 2/3rds or more of his salary. I’d rather have him in left than loaf…natural leadoff hitter. Then Nate, you know, the guy with the most RBi’s on the club, could go back to down the line-up, and drive in more runs. But, Loaf is here for the duration I fear.
Hmmm, forgot that if we traded Javy or Kawakami, it would more or less be a wash for Pierre. But, I don’t think that would happen, would it???
I hear all the time Pierre is the hardest working man in baseball, first to the park, last to leave…
A big bopper is nice, but IMHO,
    Pierre,
    Prado,
    Chipper,
    BMac,
    Nate,
    Yunel,
    Kotchman,
Frenchy (each night they could switch on who hits 8th) would score a fair number of runs.

Nah, Ber, not really thinking anything of substance… just making an observation.

Too many OF’s. Rangers may fall into the same category. Sure would like to snag Nelson Cruz… that ain’t hap’nin, though.

If I were a bettin’ man, which I am not, I’d lay money on the Braves parting with either JV or KK. They’ll stick with Huddy, which will give them 6 starters with Medlen laying in the weeds as insurance. If they swap one of those 2, they should not only net a decent return, but shed some salary too. That gives them the latitude to make a second move.

Second bet? I’m going out on a limb with this one, but don’t be surprised to see Kotch and his manageable contract traded. Who has a boppin’ 1B they want to trade and shed some salary? I could spend the afternoon looking that over, but I think I’ll do some work and keep my clients happy…

    Oh you’re no fun! 😛

I forget, we have to pick up Huddy’s option for next year, right??? Isn’t it more than Javy or Kawakami make??? Seems like it might make sense to not pay him for next year…

I think Gil has said TJ players have trouble with control, more than speed issues…or am I remembering right????

    Like

  41. 41 Voice of Raisins July 2, 2009 at 1:56 pm

TJ players who rely on velocity often try to overthrow to regain said velocity often leaving alot of stuff “up”. Having listened to Leo alot lately – he’s on local radio now – he says the key to pitching is a free and easy delivery which maintains control. He says pitchers should basically toss at about 95% exertion; if they try to “muscle up” on pitches, the pitches move up in the zone. That’s why pitches “up” are an indication of a pitcher getting tired… as they try to compensate.

Well… I have found a very detailed analysis of Huddy’s pitches, which has made my eyes glaze over, but is here:

    http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/a-close-look-at-tim-hudson/

It appears, I think, that he throws a 4 seam fastball as his bread and butter, but who knows? That’s alot of charts…

V, I see why you were confuzzled…I sure am. He throws a sinker mainly, doesn’t he???

    From the site…

    What does Tim Hudson throw?

Pitch classification is a topic that will no doubt garner many column inches over the coming months and years but John Walsh’s excellent synopsis is a great starting point in our quest.

We can classify by speed and movement and although different hurlers have different pitch characteristics we can make some generalizations. Here is a basic cheat sheet (assuming a right handed pitcher throwing to a right handed batter) :

    1. Fastball (four-seam): 90+mph pitch thrown with backspin so “rises” five to 10 inches. We say “rises” but the measurement is relative to a pitch thrown with no spin, so relative to this it “rises”. Fastballs tend to have a touch of side spin, so move five to 10 inches “in” on a right handed batter
    2. Sinker (two-seam, possibly): 90+ mph pitch that “rises” five inches or so, marginally below the fast ball—will also have lateral movement “in” on the batter
    3. Splitter: 85-92mph, moves up three to five inches, likely to have less or different sideways movement to a fastball because of the way it is thrown
    4. Curveball: 70-80 mph, moves down about 10 inches relative to a pitch with no spin and moves away from the batter zero to 10 inches (depending on whether it is a classic 12-6 curve or 11-5)
    5. Slider: 80-85mph, movement is between the curve and fastball
    6. Change-up: 80-85mph, similar movement to a fastball (up and in)

Those in the know (scouts and some fans) differ on whether Hudson has a four- or five-pitch repertoire. Let’s take a look at the Pitch f/x data and see what we can detect.

So, the guy mentions 6 pitches, then says scouts and fans differ on whether he throws 4 or 5 pitches??? Sounds like the first 6 pitches are just descriptions of the 6 main pitches…why post that there in an article on Hudson???
    Am I missing something???

Would be nice to have a guy like Pierre, but at the cost of JV or K… no way. Send Javy away? No way Jose.

Boppage will change our entire lineup. We have the pitchers we need to win, with a bit of run support. I would trade Huddy before any of our 5 SP’s.

Wait… didn’t I already say that this morning? Long day…

I don’t think Pierre is the type of player needed by the Braves. Honest, he would just be more of the same.

I am not worried about an excess of pitchers at this point. Best role for Huddy would be to go to the pen until he can build up arm strength. Of course, in this age of no PEDs, no doubt someone will end up on the DL long before the Braves reach September expansion.

Well now, to be fair, everyone was talking up the Marlins as having the best starters overall before the season started. To me it sounded like look out for the 4th place team…Braves are 6-4 in the last 10 games, and that’s after winning 3 straight. They need to keep it up though. Marlins are 7-3 in their last 10.

The Nats are up next, and we really need to show we can beat up teams like them, along with the good teams. I think we play Colorado 4 games after them, and they have been hotter than Jessica Biel lately.

Actually Ber, they play the Cubs then finish up with the Rockies.

If they can keep their focus they will do just fine. The weak underbelly of the Nationals is their lack of pitching. Plus they just traded their best closer.

I am worried a bit about McLouth, the hammy must have been more serious than originally thought.

The Nationals can also score runs but in addition to weak pitching after Zimmerman, they have a pretty porous defense. That makes their pitching even worse.

The Cubs are going through Lou Pinnella syndrome. Happens with every club he manages.

No apologies needed for belated birthday wishes. It was more of, um, a transmutation day, but birthday is easier to say. Plus, they don’t make tiny little pointy hats and kazoos for Transmutation Day celebrations anyways.

Orange Blossom cake for me! I’ll watch for the UPS man. He should be here any minute. Mmmm…

AMSTERDAM — A Cuban pitcher considered by many baseball scouts to be the No. 1 left-handed prospect in the world left his hotel and vanished before the first ball was thrown at a tournament in the Netherlands, leaving his whereabouts a mystery, a spokesman for the Dutch team said Friday.

Aroldis Chapman, a player with a 100 mph fastball, was seen walking through the lobby of his hotel and climbing into a waiting car within an hour of the team’s arrival Wednesday for a four-nation tournament, spokesman Loet van Schelbeet said.

The 21-year-old failed to show up Thursday for Cuba’s first game in Rotterdam, according to van Schelbeet.

The head of the Cuban delegation, Luis Carton, said he also had no idea where Chapman was.

“We are waiting for information. We do not know anything,” Carton told The Associated Press. “No one knows anything about what happened, if he is sick, died or left.”

It was not known whether Chapman was defecting and planning to sign with a major league team. To become a free agent, he would have to establish residency outside the United States.

Van Schelbeet said Chapman’s disappearance appeared to be well planned. He carried no luggage when he left the hotel, which was a few minutes away from the Rotterdam stadium.

He would be the most prominent Cuban baseball defector since Jose Contreras left during a tournament in Mexico in 2002.

Spokesmen for the Dutch Foreign Ministry and Department of Immigration said they had no knowledge of the case. A Spanish Foreign Ministry official also said he never heard of Chapman.

U.S. officials in The Hague said they could not comment on individual cases because of U.S. privacy laws. They said, however, that arrangements exist for Cubans seeking asylum to enter the United States.

    Braves Rumors: Vazquez, Escobar
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 3 at 3:27pm CST]

Dave O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution says the Braves could deal Javier Vazquez or Yunel Escobar this month. Here are the details:

    * Bobby Cox and Frank Wren were deep in discussion for over an hour yesterday, so O’Brien has no doubt “they’re seriously trying to make a move.” Yesterday, O’Brien reported that the Braves planned to wait before making any deals.
    * The Braves don’t want to trade Javier Vazquez, but realize he could help them acquire an impact player, presumably a bat.
    * Despite his affordable contract, Yunel Escobar is a “legit possibility to be moved,” from what O’Brien hears.

In case anyone didn’t read Carol Rogers blog today, this is pretty funny.

Speaking of Manuel, watching him walk to the mound on Wednesday night reminded me of this great little anecdote from Eddie Perez, who as you recall, caught for two years in Cleveland when Manuel was manager there.

Some Indians starter – I can’t remember who Eddie said – was getting battered around and Manuel comes out to get him. As Eddie tells it (he’s standing there on the mound listening to the whole thing), when Manuel reaches for the ball, the pitcher tells him “I’m all right. I’m fine. I’m not tired.” And Manuel goes: “Yeah, but my outfielders are tired.”

Eddie said even the pitcher had to crack a smile on that one.

CL, I understand where you and SG are coming from with Javy, but his numbers this year are much better than previous years. Now, that may have something to do with a manager that doesn’t bash his manhood, or the fact some pitchers pitch better when no runs are scored for them…or both.
Javy will be 33 later this month as well.
    His e.r.a. from 2004 on
    2004 4.91
    2005 4.42 (NL team)
    2006 4.84
    2007 3.74
    2008 4.67

It’s really a shame the Phils and braves are in the same division, cuz they match up well, IMO.

    Ken Rosenthal:

    • Frenchy toast: Here’s how one front-office man describes the Braves’ efforts to export Jeff Francoeur: “They’re trying to peddle him everywhere. They’re calling people all over baseball. But nobody’s biting. Right now, he’s about as ugly as he can get offensively. He’s the kind of guy we’d think about taking a gamble on over the winter — if he gets non-tendered and you could take him for a very low base. But right now, I think they’re stuck with him.”

    • It’s got to be Yunel: On another front, how willing are the Braves to deal Yunel Escobar now that he’s journeyed deep into Bobby Cox’s doghouse? Depends on whom you ask. An executive of one team reports: “They’re not moving him. He still figures in their plans for next year, and they’ve got him for low dollars.” But an official of another team that inquired says the response was “a very, very wobbly maybe.” Realistically, though, the Braves have no other feasible options at shortstop. So an Escobar trade seems highly unlikely, no matter how unhappy the manager might be with him.

Bear, that “tired outfielder” story is a classic. I’ll have to save that one.

On Javy… it doesn’t matter what happened in the past with Javy. Pitchers that can get hitters out is a super premium today with so few available. He’s got a few years left. Or one or two. If you only look at the numbers you take out the “steroid era” batter differential and the human equation, as you eluded to. The guy knows how to pitch. We need him. If you tell Wren to trade him I’ll have no choice but to go over y’all’s heads and go straight to JS. 😆

French 0’fer. Bobby throwing French out there every night is beyond loyalty, way past giving a chance to let him work out of a slump, no longer healthy, logical, reasonable or rational. This is way past the home town BMOC experiment. It is an exercise in futility. This has crossed the border of sane management and has become some sort of sado-masochistic ritual. Or in this case, maybe a maso-masochistic thing since nobody wants to hurt anybody. Too strange. Unintentionally hurtful for everyone. In my opinion, this kind of stuff is the metaphor of Bobby’s managing style.

As soon as French started hitting better, he had to inject himself into the news with his turkey briefs thing. He couldn’t just keep his head down and play the game, he had to become the, uh, not face… the underwear of the Braves.

SG, you have to realize Frenchy is a big dumb puppy. Everyone roots for him, in spite of themselves. He was looking a lot better of late. He had 3 2 hit games in 6 games, then two o’fers….he seems completely unable to stay patient…That is where Bobby lets him down, IMHO. After a terrible AB, swinging at a pitch at eye level(like tonight) take him out of the game. A mental lapse in the field will get Yunel out, won’t it??? A lefty walks 1 or 2 guys, out of there…might be off the team if he does it in back to back games. I figure its a lot harder to throw strikes every night than to lay off pitches you know have to be 2 feet outside, since you never get strikes thrown at you with 2 strikes!!!! 🙄

Frency’s problem is the big situation always seems to find him no matter where he is hitting in the order. In his first at bat he hit the ball 401 feet but out as that is the deepest part of the park, he smashed one down the third base line too but out.

The biggest concern is now that he has stopped swing at pitches outside the strike zone, pitchers have discovered he cannot hit mid to high fastballs thrown over the plate… A lot like Schafer…

Unless the Braves send him down, I think we are just going to have to ride this one out.

Javy…Esco…no trade…not going to get value. Don’t overlook one thing; when Esco gets admonished, he comes back…he doesn’t sulk…or at least that’s my view. At his price, you keep using the switch on him. With all due respect to Bobby, I don’t care about his doghouse…it works to the team’s detriment at times…especially the past few years. Nope, that track record ain’t so good. His parenting is ‘inconsistent’ of late (aka: since 2006).

JV is in a good spot for one of the first times in his career…and he’s young, again my view, 33. I don’t put much stock in age anyway. How can we drool all over a 40+ year old pitcher, and a 36 year old 3B, and call a 33 year old …uh, old?

Gil, I don’t like the blue/red combo either, but I dislike the red even more. Solid blue, fine. Maybe it’s the color of red… different red maybe better, not sure. For that matter, I’ve never liked the Braves uniform’s either. The 80’s caps and uni’s were horrible. Expo-ish. Methinks a design change is in order. Call in, uh, some designer that will change everything from the ‘A’ icon and typography to the icon to the caps and uni. All of it. Please just don’t give us a Colorado uni with that odd jersey or a Pittsburg Pillbox hat.

NY Yankees have the best uniform, at home anyway. I like Bosox too. I’ll have to look around for other styles.

Unless the Braves send him down, I think we are just going to have to ride this one out.

That’s what I’m afraid of too. That’ll probably happen ‘cause there ain’t no trade value now. Bobby would never use a switch, as Salty mentions, but Jeff could be helped with riding the pine a while. A splinter might be a reminder to think at the plate (before the pitch).

However… (and in all seriousness) Salty, I agree with every single sentiment in your 8:29. Dittos all.

Couple things about Yunel that I keep thinking when I watch him play.

Thing one: the ‘tude. I don’t care to armchair analize him and such, but a lot of what I see is just immature, Latino macho. He’s young and he’s fresh off the boat… literally. With the right mentoring from his teammates and coaching, including behind closed door smacks when he get’s an unhelpful attitude, he would grow up a bit quicker than if left to his own devices and perhaps his environment growing up. By the way, other than being the first to arrive and the last to leave the buffet, what is Chino’s role again?

Thing two: If you’ve heard this elsewhere I’d be surprised. Yunel is not going to be shortstop for a long period of time. Have no idea what his parents look like or what genes he’s carrying around but he isn’t the wirey, lean machine that typically inhabits that ground between third and second. He’s chunked up quite a bit. Big boned from the waste down mostly. Narrow face gives the appearance of slim, but that’s where it ends… at the neck. His speed now is because of his youth.

His hip may be a result of that weight. His weight and his hip (or knees) are going to shorten his SS career. In the meantime, he won’t be a Cal Ripken, Derek Jeter, or a host of others that have excelled in the position, from Walt Weiss to Raffy. It ain’t always just the talent, it’s the body type. SS requires the body of a tennis player.

Second base requires the body type of a trash can… like Lemmer. Or Prado.

That said, we play Yunel until it makes sense to trade him at his peak value. Barring further hip or other injuries, that could be a year or two. Who knows.

SG… I agree on your observation that Yunel as a shortstop is not a long term endeavor. If he would get his mind right, I think he would have a long future as the Braves future third baseman. Personally, I don’t think he has the courage to be a second baseman. He does not like contact….

Still, who knows what the future holds for the Braves? Anything can happen in a time span of a few days, just ask Sarah Palin and Mark Sanford… Of course for different reasons…

And while I am on politics, I really like the chances of Bob McDonnell in the 2010 Virginia Governor’s race. Even SG would like this guy… it will be close however with northern Virginia becoming more liberal with every carpetbagging transplant.

    Happy Birthday, America!
And THANKS to the ones who made it possible!!

    An American Soldier

He was getting old and paunchy
And his hair was falling fast,
And he sat around the Legion,
    Telling stories of the past.

Of a war that he once fought in
And the deeds that he had done,
    In his exploits with his buddies;
    They were heroes, every one.

And ‘tho sometimes to his neighbors
    His tales became a joke,
    All his buddies listened quietly
For they knew where of he spoke.

But we’ll hear his tales no longer,
For ol’ Bob has passed away,
And the world’s a little poorer
    For a Soldier died today.

He won’t be mourned by many,
Just his children and his wife.
    For he lived an ordinary,
    Very quiet sort of life.

He held a job and raised a family,
    Going quietly on his way;
And the world won’t note his passing,
    ‘Tho a Soldier died today.

    When politicians leave this earth,
    Their bodies lie in state,
    While thousands note their passing,
And proclaim that they were great.

Papers tell of SO-CALLED ENTERTAINERS life stories
From the time that they were young
But the passing of a Soldier
    Goes unnoticed, and unsung.

    Is the greatest contribution
To the welfare of our land,
Some jerk who breaks his promise
    And cons his fellow man?

    Or the ordinary fellow
Who in times of war and strife,
Goes off to serve his country
    And offers up his life?

    The politician’s stipend
And the style in which he lives,
    Are often disproportionate,
To the service that he gives.

    While the ordinary Soldier,
    Who offered up his all,
Is paid off with a medal
    And perhaps a pension, small.

It’s so easy to forget them,
For it is so many times
That our Bobs and Jims and Johnnys,
Went to battle, but we know,

    It is not the politicians
    With their compromise and ploys,
Who won for us the freedom
    That our country now enjoys.

Should you find yourself in danger,
    With your enemies at hand,
Would you really want some cop-out,
    With his ever waffling stand?

Or would you want a Soldier–
His home, his country, his kin,
    Just a common Soldier,
Who would fight until the end.

He was just a common Soldier,
And his ranks are growing thin,
But his presence should remind us
We may need his like again.

For when countries are in conflict,
    We find the Soldier’s part
Is to clean up all the troubles
    That the politicians start.

If we cannot do him honor
While he’s here to hear the praise,
Then at least let’s give him homage
At the ending of his days.

    Perhaps just a simple headline
In the paper that might say:

    “OUR COUNTRY IS IN MOURNING,
    A SOLDIER DIED TODAY.”

Usually anything having to do with ‘macho’ is immature.

True that. True machismo is revealed by men that don’t try to act the part, because if they did, they would simply be actors. John Wayne had the real thing. Jimmy Stewart, real deal. Ahhnold… big body, big ego, bad actor.

Trying to be ‘macho’ is like behaving in such a way that would be described as having a ‘superiority complex’, which is a misnomer… there is no such thing as a superior human being that touts their superiority. It is a sense of inferiority that causes one to convince others of such, which of course over-compensation of the ugliest kind.

Gil, even I would like Bob McDonnell? Is he to the right of Reagan? 😀

Haven’t yet caught up on the Palin thing, therefore I don’t even know what to think about it. On the surface, it seems she’s “quitting”. At the moment, I can’t see how that could be good for her political career. Maybe it’s good for Alaska and maybe good for her personally… dunno. Strange. Unexpected.

SG: If you’ve heard this elsewhere I’d be surprised. Yunel is not going to be shortstop for a long period of time.

Gil: I think he would have a long future as the Braves future third baseman.

Perhaps the Braves have the same sense… after all, they drafted 4 SS’s in this draft – in rounds 4, 9, 12 and 33 – all college products.

I have been pretty vocal in my criticism over the lack of a future 3B in the pipeline, given Chipper’s age and decreased mobility. Maybe the future at 3B is not found in the pipeline, but about 45 feet to Chipper’s left.

I think Bobby’s doghouse takes many forms and shapes. I believe many times we don’t know of the dwellers therein. But in Yunel’s case, his media magnetism makes it a bit difficult to keep anything “in house”. He is “high profile” personified.

While I’m sharing my beliefs, I DO NOT believe Yunel will be traded this season. Why trade him for a bat when he swings a pretty good bat himself? That being said, I think it is a pretty good move to “announce” that you’ll listen. It is an easy way to open dialogue with other GM’s… dialogue which may lead in multiple directions. Yep, the ol’ bait and switch. Ask yourself one question: How often has any Braves GM being JS or being under JS publically “announced” any trade intentions with regard to their own players? Even though they have aggressively shopped Jeffrey, have they ever “announced” it? Nope…

It’s all tactical, my friends… tactical posturing. Many pieces get moved all over the chess board before the king gets mated. 😯 Wait… that didn’t come out right…

And then there’s this tid-bit offered by Gordon Edes of Yahoo! Sports:

There is some speculation that the Braves might consider moving Escobar to the outfield.

I can’t see that one myself, unless it’s to replace JF for one year. JHey will man RF beginning in 2011. 2010 will likely have McLouth in LF with Schafer back in CF.

The other possibility is that the Braves would actually listen to offers for Schafer, in which case they’d keep Nate in CF and move Yunel to LF. Now that is a more likely scenario. Of course, there’s the pesky reality of no replacement at SS…

On the upside down flag: If this country ever gets to the point of being taken over by internal or external forces and powers whose very purpose and policies contradict the Constitution, limit or destroy free enterprise, limit or remove freedom, over taxation and cleverly but hardly disguised devices like Cap & Trade, carbon credits, Global Warming (renamed “climate change” due to the earth actually cooling), redistribution of wealth, nationalizing corporations and banning Christian references in public places, then the “extreme distress” signal of an upside down flag would be not only patriotic, but brave.

Surely the “rulers” would attack, imprison or destroy those that called attention to the rogue socialist, Marxist, fascist regime. God help us all if that happens. I’m afraid that it would transpire in such a way that most people would be either too ignorant (brainwashed by the media), fearful of retribution to go along. Many, probably most, would simply be well intentioned and too naïve to believe that silence and compliance would be the best course for their own personal security as they watch one person and group after the other be “demonized” as they were being harassed, lose their wealth or their property, imprisoned, or destroyed.

If our founding fathers had taken the safe course of going along with the British rule in an attempt to have a partial democracy, we would all be bowing to the King today. By revolting, England was saved and America was born. Before that, if Moses had not lead the Jews from Egypt, we might all be building pyramids today.

The flag should not be flown upside down for a single issue or a personal issue, regardless of how much it effects us as individuals. However, if the fundamental principles and freedoms that our country was founded upon give way to a regime such as I’ve partially described, the distress flag will be flown by the brave patriots. There is a distinction.

Hope and pray it never comes to that. I do.

Our cat Callie, seen in photos here https://bravesandstuff.wordpress.com/our-own-candid-cameras/berigans-photos/

Is a very sick kitty! 😦 She is dying. She has lost a lot of weight of late, and I felt a huge lump by her left shoulderblade just in the last few weeks. Took her to the vet Thursday to get an I.V. as I have heard being dehydrated is painful for cats. When there, the vet confirmed what I was thinking, a big Cancerous tumor…
She told me to prepare for the inevitable…I was thinking I would be bringing her back in a few weeks or so to be put to sleep, still eating, not a lot, but still eating, and asking for food several times a day.
Well, last night, she started to act strangely, rolled over several times very quickly, and I found the paper bag she had been hiding in of late that she had lost bladder control. I think it freaked both of us out. I thought it was some sort of stroke, since she seemed to want to get up, but the left side of her body wouldn’t cooperate. So I petted her for a long time, and she calmed down and rested…layed there for an hour or so, and when I finally was going to bed, she then walked over quickly to lay down in front of the computer tower!
Knew vet would be open til Noon, so got up around 11 to call them, then remembered what day it was, and sure enough…they are closed.
I guess we will have to take her to the emergency vet later on today. She joined the family in 1995…..

Olney’s Latest: Atlanta’s Potential Trade Partners
By Mike Axisa [July 4 at 10:59am CST]

ESPN.com’s Buster Olney chimes in with some players and teams that could matchup in a trade with the Braves, who could dangle Javier Vazquez and/or Yunel Escobar as bait. Most of the rumors are just Olney’s own speculation, but let’s round ’em up anyway.

    * The Red Sox have liked Escobar for a while, but don’t match up very well for a trade.
    * Jacoby Ellsbury could be a fit, but Boston would then need to find another centerfielder.
    * Olney speculates that the Red Sox could use their young pitching to engage a third team in a trade, mentioning that Matt LaPorta, Shin-Soo Choo and Corey Hart could be a good fit.
    * Boston could eat some of the money left on Julio Lugo’s deal to give Atlanta a stop-gap shortstop should they deal Escobar.
    * The Red Sox are not interested in Jeff Francoeur.
    * If Milwaukee and Atlanta discussed a Vazquez-Hart swap, the Brewers would likely have to kick in another piece.
    * The Twins could offer one of their many outfielders in exchange for Escobar. Delmon Young might not be enough to entice the Braves, but Michael Cuddyer or Denard Span could be.
    * The Dodgers would love to add Vazquez to their rotation, but Juan Pierre probably wouldn’t be enough given his lack of power.
    * The A’s could package Matt Holliday and Orlando Cabrera, both free agents after the season, for Escobar, who would step in as Oakland’s shortstop of the future.

So sorry to hear about your cat, Bear. They are a part of our family. I’ve had to put several down and it is very difficult but sometimes necessary for the good of the family and it’s the most humane decision for the pet. I’ve mistakenly spent thousands of dollars to save a loved cat, only to succeed in extending it’s discomfort and pride. My good intentions were unwise. It wasn’t the money, it was the extension of the inevitable.

Sounds morbid, but after a solid diagnosis (sounds like you already have that), I would strongly recommend this: have the vet administer a sedative in the IV, prior to the other, life-ending drug. A much kinder and gentler way of doing this than only the one shot.

I feel for you and your loved one.

And it has surely spread. Unfortunately, I’ve been there, done that – so I do understand. I agree with SG on the 2 shots. My vet always does that because it is so much easier on the cat. A very quiet, peaceful way to slip away.

I’ll dig up some more cute photos later on. Like I said before, 1995 when she came to us. Clinton was president, I was in my 20’s still(42 now) It was a long time ago. First times since the 80s we haven’t had a girl cat around.

My fondest memory was one of my first of hers. Like so many of our cats, she was a stray. We had 3 at the time, and just couldn’t take on any more cats!(Ended up with 5 eventually!!!) I’d come home late from working at Borders in Duluth, Ga and she would be meowing….sniff my fingers , I don’t think I could pet her…so long ago, I can’t remember! When she kept showing up night after night…and it was getting colder, I would leave the garage door open a few feet. Then I left an old towel so she wouldn’t have to lay on the cold concrete. Still not enough for her, she was wanting to come in. I remember telling her, “hon, we can’t take another cat in, plus, who knows what diseases you are carrying???” So, you know what this cat that had just said hello a week or so did???
She jumped into my arms, and put her head on my shoulder!
Makes me still tear up thinking about it. I give girl….needless to say, we took her in….

McNair played 13 seasons in the NFL, 11 were with the Titans. He played his final two years with the Baltimore Ravens, retiring after the 2007 season.

I really wish it was like the old days, and they would bring them up in Sept to get a taste of the bigs now, an prepare next year (After AZ league) to either start in AAA or even the bigs….
I haven’t seen any of Freeman (or did I in spring training?) but I saw Heyward on tape(I mean footage on dvd?) and that is one beautiful swing! A leftie of course…

Missed the game today, but it’s not surprising that the pen blew one. Bear is right about Cox needing to throw some other arms out there. Instead, we seem to wear out just a few. I wear out favorite shoes because to be favorite they have to be most comfortable, but I’d hope to spread it around a bit with pitchers.

Never thought I’d see it, but Acosta has looked like a new man this year. He had the talent before, but he seems to have found the confidence to go along with it. How he found that must’ve come from within, because I can’t remember a confidence boosting outing he had last year.

Beaten by the Nats. Oh well, a consolation may be that they beat up on the Yanks and Bosox, right? Win tomorrow and win the series before heading to Chi-town.

Well, I told you folks the Nats could swing the bat. I don’t know who else Bobby could have run out there in the eight. They score runs off of Moylan and O’Flarerty too. Of course Gonzo put them on base but that was because he was over throwing the ball…

Top ‘o the mornin’. Gil, we’ll take rain here right about now. Just too hot and humid enough to sweat in 5 minutes without doing anything but not humid enough to do any good for the lawn and garden. Glad I have my own well water or this would be an expensive garden.

Sorry I missed the game yesterday, mostly to see Hanson. That kid is really pitching. Hannan is no slouch either, but 3 runs ain’t gonna win lot’s of ball games… not with with a tired pen and against good sluggers.

We have the starting pitching to compete and we have enough talent to score some runs in fits and starts, but the two biggest problems now are; we’re missing a cleanup bopper that would change the entire lineup and, we’re dragging a ball and chain around in LF. Dead wood that needs to be cleaned out.

Think KJ was given a graceful exit in the DL assignment? I have no idea, but wouldn’t be surprised. Hey, a wrist case sounds better than a head case. Maybe teams that may one day (winter?) be interested in Kelly would assume his slump was wrist related and take him off our hands.

Haven’t had time to look into Brooks Conrad. Is he ready for prime time?

Braves are a frustrating team this year. Sweep Phillies then lose 2 out of 3 to the worst team in baseball, the lowly Nats. Go figger. Uninspired baseball. Missing a bat. We have so many holes in the lineup. Automatic outs scattered throughout. I wish Cox would just go ahead and play Conrad a few games at second, put Prado at first, anybody in left instead of GA, keep Diaz in right.

Between Kotchman, KJ (DL), GA, and French, we don’t have enough consistency in hitting to put runs on the board. The guys we need to build around are too few and far between. On top of that, Chipper is slumping and only one home run in 95 AB’s.

Sweeping the Phils showed heart and talent. Losing to Nats shows the other side of our struggling, inconsistent, uninspired club. Mix those two together and win half your games. That’s a classic .500 team for ya.

Oh, the humanity! I need to wash my eyes out…

This clip may very well be one of the only things worth reading from across the street this afternoon, from a staff writer that is kind and seems a good person, Carroll Rogers:

some postgame for those who are interested….

“We just got beat today,” Chipper Jones said. “They just outpitched us, outhit us, played good defense. Yesterday was the one that hurt.”

last was the eighth inning disaster, you recall, when the Braves spoiled a 3-1 lead for Tommy Hanson.

“Yesterday killed all of our momentum,” Jones said. “Everybody was feeling good. We were upbeat. On a winning streak, everything was rounding into form and we didn’t show up in the eighth ining and all of a sudden all of the momentum stops. You give them a breath of fresh air, renewed hope to be able to win the series with a good performance today and lo and behold they did.”

Now, I like Chipper and he’s a HOF guy and I don’t want to pick apart his words from an impromptu interview with the ajc staff writer, but these are the kind of comments that drive me nuts. Chipper does that from time to time and I don’t think they’re helpful to the team at all.

The leadership of the Braves, of which should include Jones, need to create their own momentum, make their own luck, refuse to succumb to swings in innings and not be subject to other teams controlling the “momentum” or the game. That’s what separates the winners from the losers in any sport and in life. After getting knocked down, winners get up from the ground and seize opportunities given and make good things happen when those opportunities don’t present themselves. Damn the inevitable in-game “momentum” shifting. Make it happen, don’t wait on it to happen.

Makes it sound like our guys gave in a little sooner today because they blew one yesterday. So, in other words, it was out of their control? The gods of momentum predestined the Braves to succumb to the ravages and evils of momentum.

You know Cox ain’t gonna talk these kids through this “momentum” crap and pump them up. Chipper seems to be buying into the inevitability of, when blowing one, losing the next day just gets chalked up to fate. So who is going to step up and rile this dysfunctional team up and get them to scrap for runs and refuse to lose? Who is it? Is there a man aboard?

I know Chipper is a great competitor and I don’t think he meant exactly how his words came out or consider how they might represent his attitude, but he needs to get better at communicating. Most of his teammates listen to him and learn from him. He’s not being a good teacher here.

What makes that even more damaging is, in the hierarchy of the club, he’s at the top of all players. Finding a younger or newer teammate to seize the ‘attitude reins’ and preempt or contradict Chipper is gonna be tough. May get in Bobby’s doghouse and never get out.

Maybe I’m making too much out of it but comments like this, particularly from veterans that are titular heads of the team, just rub me the wrong way. Am I off base here?

SG, I’m of the opinion that ONE inning should not have any effect their efforts in any subsequent innings, especially in the next day’s game!

    That is ONE bloomin’ inning!

I can’t second guess Chipper. He’s there and I’m not, but, according to that article, they LET the Nats win by giving up. And, no, Bobby will never address that.

    Chino? Right.

Where, oh where is Pat Coralles when he is so badly needed??? Where is Smoltzie? Glavine?? Oh, yeah..never mind!

    Where is – anybody???

A thought: maybe this is why Anderson has the lack of enthusiasm that he does. He sees that they have no fire in ’em. If they are playing inning by inning, they – and we – can forget them ever being better than they are right now.

    Until something changes.

Saw the last few innings of the game. The teams offense is so inconsistent. Starters who are always pitching in games that they are behind in, well…it’s not a good thing. The last hit Lowe gave up was a good sinker. Should have left him in.
And Joe Simpson seems to have it out for Yunel, acting like the terrible throw by McCann wasn’t the issue on the stolen base, that Yunel was late in covering 2nd. If the throw was on the money, or to the left of the bag, it wouldn’t have been an issue.
Boog said, while we played well against the Red Sox twice, and the Yankees, they still won those series, which is what better teams do to lesser teams.
You cannot lose 2 of 3 to the Nats, and expect to win. Best hope(unless a big deal is made) is for a .500 team.

Why do people lie like that? The dude was shacking up with a 20 year old hussy while lying to his wife and 4 kids and the rest of the world. We won’t even mention his numerous substance related police altercations.

The point is, he was killed by his girlfriend, leaving behind a wife and 4 kids. He was not a good person. He was a turd. I get so tired a our tolerant, “open minded” society… or lack of real society.

Yes, it appears that people in the media feel a strong sense that they need to see their own words in print… They often want more to be the story than to tell the story. Products of the “me” generation perhaps?

I look upon the situation with the Braves as one like the driver who is running low on fuel. Does he risk running out while seeking the lowest price per gallon or does he realize that the time of bargain shopping is past because no one really wants to have to walk to the nearest gas station because the tank ran empty. Where upon the driver finds he not only has to walk and pay the prevailing rate but an extra $50 for a container to carry his purchase back to his car.

So, my advice is to the Braves is either make the deal or not leave home in the first place.

Gil, good advice! It would appear that with their being such dearth of starters out there, we would be in a position of power, but everyone seems to be of the opinion that they will not trade their top prospects. Well, that’s good up to a point, but somehow I don’t think Wren is going to trade Javy for Corey Hart. His swing looks terrible now. He still manages to run into more pitches than frenchy, for homers I mean…but same bad average, same sort of swing with holes in it.

And speaking of Frenchy, one swing, one out yesterday, behind on a 89 MPH “fastball” Anyone check his birth certificate??? I could pass for late 20’s with a haircut and a shave, maybe he’s in his late 30’s and is losing batspeed! 😆

Well, looks like that pesky momentum thing has hold of the game tonight. Must be a holdover from Washington. Nothing can be done to change momentum. It is written in the baseball ‘rules for losers’.

Fitting. Nothing good comes out of Washington.

Part of Francoeur interview on ajc blog:

“Of course I want to play,” Francoeur said. “I’m not happy about it. But I can’t do anything about it. Like I said, I don’t make the lineups out….

“I’ve got all the confidence in the world. I know I can play. Sometimes things just don’t work out the way you want to them. Every ballplayer wants to play. Just have to be patient and wait my turn, whether it’s here or somewhere else. I don’t control that.”

Right. Now, that’s the good attitude Jeffy. He’s right about not making the lineups out, but he doesn’t have any problem making a plain old out.

Instead of comments like “I don’t control that”, referring to playing somewhere else, he should focus on what he can control… his bat and his mouth.

That boy is getting on my last nerve.

Two twisters in two weeks, 60-80 mph winds, lightning, gully washers, driving hail… mother nature at it’s most glorious and destructive. I’m ready for a few days of calm ‘farmer’s rain’. No wind, hail or lightning.

Great article on the demise of the FrenchFry by Mark Bradley can be found here:

    http://blogs.ajc.com/mark-bradley-blog/2009/07/07/hes-frenchy-as-in-benchy-and-he-could-soon-be-gone/?cxntlid=sldr_hm

    Excerpt:

When Job got fed up, as Job would periodically, he’d head up to Adairsville and stop by the farm, and he’d say to Bobby Cox, “I’m at wit’s end — what should I do?”

And Bobby Cox would say, “Joby [as we know, Cox loves his nicknames], just be patient.”

OK, I embellish. But I do it to make a point: When you’ve exhausted Bobby Cox’s legendary patience, you’re probably not long for these Braves. Last week Kelly Johnson went from being the everyday second baseman to being benched to being placed on the disabled list, and now Jeff Francoeur has been held out of the lineup three games running. And the sound you heard was of two homegrown players who’ve been Atlanta Braves since 2004 going, “Gulp.”

It takes Cox a lot longer to lose faith than it does, say, Lou Piniella. Cox believes until he’s given reason to stop believing, but when he stops … well, that’s about all she wrote. Johnson was afforded every opportunity and hit .216. Francoeur was extended an even longer grace period — we’re now going on a second calendar year of his laboriously documented flailings — but has simply ceased being a competent big-league hitter. And now both have been benched.

    Yikes… 😯

The rain is good… trouble is, the storm and the strong winds that knock off all the small tree branches make the lawn look worse than before cleaning. Sigh…

Add a hit in the lineup for Brooks.

He’s a just arrived rookie, but I really like this kid. I know, he just got here and all, but he plays like a determined scrapper and a hitter… just like McLouth. He’s shown very good plate discipline, especially after only playing a few times in the bigs. He’s got the physical makeup of a second bagger… solid and low to the ground, like Lemmer. And I’ll bet he’s not afraid to take a hit to start or finish a double play. I’m betting he’s ready.

Wish Diaz was playing instead of French. What is it with his 3 day layoffs? Once on the bench and once in Mississippi.

OK… I’m working late, but waiting on some info to be forwarded before I can continue. So, since I have a few minutes…

I have broken out the ol’ crystal ball. Some pre-July 31 predictions:

    * Yunel will not be traded. Period.

    * JV will be traded. Ken Rosenthal says there is no bat of worth to be traded for him, but a bat plus prospects will do it. He can yield a bounty of almost Teixeirian proportion, replenishing the system and freeing up the remainder of his $11MM+ salary in the process.

    * One of the co-closers will be dealt in another deal that will yield a substantial bounty, although maybe not quite as big as JV. (My money is on Soriano to stay and be extended.)

    * FrenchHeart will be a throw in on one of the deals.

    * Ditto with KJ.

    * Medlen will be the 5th starter until Huddy is ready in late August.

    * A bat of some worth will come back in one of the deals. I, for one, would not be surprised if a 1B were obtained and Kotch is sent away in much the same way he was acquired to begin with.

Great game last night. I hope Raisins’ crystal ball is wrong about Javy. He’s a keeper in my book.

No “man crush” on Conrad, Bear, but I hope Bobby lets him start a few times to prove himself. Good D, great diving grab at second and quick throwout. His “trouble getting out of glove” exchange on the DP attempt has been widely reported, but I saw a completely different play there. The ball was thrown unnecessarily hard by Yunel. As a second baseman, you can’t carem a throw off of your glove into your throwing hand and toss to first when you’re thrown a heater like that from so close. If there was a glitch it wasn’t Brooks, it was Yunel.

Of course this wasn’t mentioned by Joe or Boog, as they were too busy talking about everything except what was happening on the field… as usual. If you have the game on DVR, check out that play. Yunel scorched it.

Bear, agreed that Diaz being called to bunt in that spot was a bad, yet typical move by Cox. True what Raisins said about major league players being able to bunt and execute and such, but that’s idealism or theory, not reality. The reality is, and Cox should know this, is that Diaz can scorch the ball but he can’t bunt worth a hoot. Whether he should be able to bunt is not the point.

Not all players can do all things with equal success. This is why pitchers aren’t normally called on to pinch hit and sluggers aren’t typically called upon to bunt, especially when you have guys on the bench that have excelled at it. Putting Diaz in there to bunt was just another revealing, nonsensical move by Bobby.

A large part of being a good manager means knowing the strengths and weaknesses of your players, not just left/right matchups from a tattered old playbook.

Raisins, trading Javy for a bat and prospects is the Braves saying, very clearly, that the team will not see October for at least three years, if not five or six.

Javy and JJ have been our two best starters this year, regardless of the lack of run support which resulted in losses or no decisions…

Makes no sense at all to trade a known quality that is successful for a handful of prospects that may not even make it to the bigs. The man can pitch like not many in the MLB. Why would we trade him?

Makes for great trade talk but I think it would be an idiotic move for the Braves to part with Javy. Like trading a gold dollar for a mine shaft that’ll take 3 years to explore. The mine shaft may cave in and it may produced more than one gold piece. I’ll take the gold in hand and let someone else like Huddy or Medlin be exchanged for the shaft. Risk for risk is a fair investment trade, not blue chip for a risky startup.

Yes, SG, I would agree re JV except for one thing… I mentioned a bat plus prospects. As I said before, it should be a real bat of boppage.

This team struggles offensively. It is well chronicled. I love JV, but if you look at the course of his career, he consistently has a high year followed by a low year. This is a high year. Next year..? History says maybe not so much.

If you can get a bona fide power bat for this year plus at least one more, plus top prospects, why not?

The bat is in the lineup every day. The Braves struggle to score runs every day. JV only helps you every 5th day… and his record proves that pitching alone won’t cut it.

Yea, Raisins, you make good points and you may very well be right about JV alternating good and bad (or not as good) years or that he’s being considered for trade… but I just wouldn’t bet against him and wouldn’t trade him… not for two years anyway, while young guns are being found, brought up, sorted out and tested to replace he and Lowe.

Building around Hanson and JJ requires inning eating, dependable Lowe and Javy for a few years or we’re gonna get smacked around so bad JJ and Hanson won’t want to stay.

    Good mornin’ everyone!

Well, I am going to agree with SG, and V, which ought to get them both mad at me! 😉 Hopefully, everyone will just agree that as usual, I am brilliant! 🙂 (This would all seem funnier with the old emoticons)

First SG, about Matt’s bunting last night…right on my Brotha! I say right on, cuz I was thinking the same thing whilst in bed last night….about how a manager has to know his players strength and weaknesses. I don’t see Chipper, McCann, or Frenchy called on to bunt. Chipper hasn’t had much power this year,(and only hit .247 for the month of June) why not have him bunt??? Frenchy sucks, why not him??? G.A. bunt much??? Shouldn’t they all be called upon to bunt when the team isn’t scoring much???
Now, I heard Joe and Boog say something about the fact Loaf was still in the game in the 9th. Was Blanco sick/injured last night??? Then that’s different.
Still, I just think giving up outs all the time to move a runner over one base…just isn’t winning baseball these days. I’d love to know how often the braves scored after bunting a runner over. It must be less than 40% of the time. We scored one time, but it may be taking us out of big innings as well. Oh well, not like Bobby is going to change, is it???

Now V, right on my brotha! SG, you know we need a bopper, right??? Kotchman, KJ, Frenchy, G.A., and a bag of balls are not gonna get us one, are they??? Freeman and Heyward are untouchable….and well, who is left in the system to trade off???
Parity is great for baseball, lots of teams are still in it as of today. Check out how many teams are in the wildcard hunt! http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/standings?type=wild&br=5&year=2009&order=false&st=2

By my count, there are only 4 teams in each league that you could say were truly out of it. And if they are out of it, what boppers do they have??? And they aren’t going to want an established fairly costly starter….so we need some team like the Brewers to cough up one of their many bats…otherwise It’s just going to be a tough, tough trade season. Who matches up with us, besides them???

If the Brewers want JV, they’ll have to cough up Alcides Escobar or Mat Gamel, both of with are “untouchable”. But that is exactly what I am talking about. Quality for quality. You gotta give to get. It works both ways.

If they would give up Escober (Acides), he is a tremendous young SS. You plant him at SS, move Yunel to 3B, Chipper to 1B, and Kotchman to the trade market.

If it’s Gamel (my preference), he is a tremendous young 3B where he moves right in with Chipper moving to 1B. Sorry again Kotch.

    I like Kotchman… on someone else’s team. 😀

Looking at some outside news sources, some think Melvin might loosen up the “untouchable” label from Gamel for Vazquez.

Gamel has come up as a 3B, but is viewed by many around Milwaukee as Fielder’s 1B replacement if he leaves via FA in 2012.

The point is, he could play 1B now, and move to 3B when Freddie is ready, and Chipper is kaput.

    DO’B:

Greg Norton’s rehab stint expired at Class AAA Gwinnett, and the veteran pinch-hitter was recalled by the Braves. But he wasn’t activated, and it’s uncertain if or when he will be.

Manager Bobby Cox said Norton, who had been rehabbing a sore ankle, would continue to work out and join the Braves in Colorado, where they start a four-game series Thursday.

“We’ll figure it out from there,” Cox said.

After ranking among the majors’ best pinch-hitters in 2008, Norton has hit only .098 (4-for-41) with no homers and three RBIs this season, including four hits in 33 at-bats as a pinch-hitter.

The Braves might choose to keep outfielder Gregor Blanco on the roster as their fifth outfielder and backup center fielder.

I don’t see real value in trading JV. This year more than any in recent memory reminds me of 60’s-70’s baseball…nowhere near the scoring of the past 15-20 years. Thus, it’s about holding the other team at bay, and playing fundamental baseball. Unless a team bowls the Braves over, I don’t see it, not before the offseason.

Hudson’s return for this year isn’t guaranteed…and with the inconsistent offense, the team can’t give starts away…aka: Medlen.

Frenchy for Hart…change of venue may rejuvenate both. Gonzales or Soriano in a trade…perhaps. Still, with so many teams in the hunt, who’s going to trade and convince their fans they haven’t tossed in the towel. It’s tough to get fans in the seats already…promise of success at least makes them think about parting with $$. Trades…may undo. That said (as I meander to a close), what’s the better deal, fewer tickets sold, or disposing of a high salary? I think it’s a wash this late in the year.

Yankers would love to have either Gonzo or Soriano. I would think Shelley Duncan, who bats rightie, plays RF or LF and has 21 HR’s in 70 games at AAA might be appealing. He can’t crack the lineup in NY. Add a couple of warm bodies here and there and a match could be made.

Salty, I’ve seen enough of airports to more than last me a lifetime! I so thoroughly despise USAir that I can’t even tell you. Goes back to their deliberate actions during/after their take-over to anything PAI, their continuing disdain of PAI employees – regardless of length of service, right on up to their treatment of retired employees during their many bankruptcy proceedings, which resulted in people losing their homes, divorces, and suicides. We’re talking about people who had worked for 30 – 40 years or more, some people in their 80s and 90s. The top officers of the company took millions upon millions, totaling billions of the company’s money.

Their management was the exact opposite of what it should have been. LOTS of bitterness towards that company. And they (management) STILL regard their passengers with contempt.

It goes deep. Real deep. (And I’ve barely brushed the surface here!)

IF Halladay is traded, figure on the wildcard only!

Phils Are Early Favorites For Halladay
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 8 at 11:26am CST]

One source told Ed Price of MLB Fanhouse that “the Phillies are leaders at this point” in the Roy Halladay sweepstakes. However, that doesn’t mean the Jays ace will be dealt. As another source points out, J.P. Ricciardi is not in a hurry to trade Halladay, so there’s an equal chance he stays in Toronto.

And the haul Halladay could bring? The Erik Bedard trade (Adam Jones, George Sherrill and others) and the Dan Haren trade (Carlos Gonzalez, Brett Anderson and others) could be benchmarks.

Jon Heyman of SI.com heard from an executive who believes the Jays would hesitate to deal Halladay within their own division. Does that make the Phillies favorites?

The executives who spoke with Joel Sherman of the New York Post believe the Phillies are the frontrunners for Halladay. The Phillies want to win now and they think Halladay’s ground ball-based approach would thrive in their homer-friendly park.

Sherman also heard the Rangers and Cardinals could make strong plays for Halladay. The Rangers are borrowing money from MLB, but some believe they could spend enough to make a push for the Blue Jays’ ace, who has about $23MM remaining on his current deal. Texas has many appealing pieces to offer. However, we heard last week that they have “limited” ability to add payroll.

This year more than any in recent memory reminds me of 60’s-70’s baseball…nowhere near the scoring of the past 15-20 years.

Salty, I’ve been thinking that same thing lately and wondering how this year stacks up in MLB runs scored vs. the last 15-16 years average. By the way, your 11:25 was spot on and very nicely put. Good perspective.

If there is a marked increase in runs from, say 1990 to 2006, I’d not be at all surprised. And we all know how that 16 year period differed between 1990 and this year… arguably the first “clean” year since ’90. Those stats must be available somewhere but I hate looking that stuff up.

Would be very interesting to see a graph or chart (or list) of runs scored, by year, starting in 1970. My bet is that the ‘roid era numbers looked like the tech stocks of the 90’s. Now the numbers resemble the bank stocks (or 401k’s) of 2008-9.

All in all and in the grand scheme of things, the pendulum has swung. Fans (and players) will adjust their expectations over time. Barroid’s dubious HR record (with a big fat asterisk) may never be broken. Until some chemist comes along again and can beat the tests anyway.

Without steroids, teams will have to win the old fashioned way, with pitching, speed and defense. Oh, almost forgot the oldest natural, non-chemical MLB advantage of all. Been around since baseball began… moolah. Out the wazoo. Lot’s of it.

Gil, I’ve never said that there was never a need for unions and that all unions are bad. I have said, in so many words, that unions, just like individuals, governments and corporations, can be corrupted to the point of forcing honest people to leave, companies to either go offshore or go out of business and governments to, well, they win no matter what. Some regimes screw us more than others.

When corporations and governments get in bed with unions we have a menage a trois from hell.

It’s all one heck’uva balancing free-enterprise act. Eventually, with luck, faith and common sense, the pluses and minuses all even out and good, honest people can recieve fair wages and safe working conditions and good companies can make good profits and enjoy growth. Together they build and provide good products and services. When they’ve achieved the good balance, the ultimate boss decides the fate of everyone. No, not the government. The government, without complete and totalitarian control and repression, can control the masses in their freedom of choice… although the current administration and Congress seem to think that being the boss of all is their job.

The ultimate boss is and always has been the consumer. The voter. The citizen. Make inferior products, provide inferior services, lord over them and unfairly tax them and risk ticking them off. If that happens and the tipping point is reached, it matters not what the political power and perks, corporate profits and employee benefits might be… union or not.

Nice jazz trio…had to cut that short to head over to to an old jazz pianist that still played once a week at a casual little bar/restaurant. Alrighty, SG…you asked…Salty delivers. I will keep it brief.

In the 70’s, teams averaged a low of 3.69 runs/game (1972…year before the DH) and a high of 4.47 (1977). In fact, since the DH, 1976 (3.99) was the last year under 4 runs/game.

In the 80’s, teams averaged a low of 4.0 runs/game (1981…recession?) and a high of 4.72 (1987…and the arrival of the Bash Brothers…just sayin!)

    In the 90’s, teams averaged a low of 4.12 runs/game (1992)and a high of 5.08 (1999). To be fair…the 90’s had expansion, in a significant way.

In this decade, the low mark was actually 4.59 runs/game (2005), and the high mark of 5.14 was in 2000.

Here are some interesting trends, though…and perhaps supportive of our hunch. First, 2007 was the first time since 1997 that fewer than 5000 home runs were hit. Last year was almost 100 fewer…and this year is definitely trending lower still.

Runs per game this year are trending lowest since 1993 and with so many teams in the hunt, that just may hold. One thing that is definitely noticeable: post-95, offense and homers absolutely exploded…and they have backed off in the past three. That’s not a coincidence, in my very humble view. OK…I wasn’t so short.

I don’t see the similarity, Gil. Maybe I’m mssing something. To me, he more closely compares to Dirt… the Lemmer. Sturdy legs and all. Conrad and McLouth could be brothers. Ross too. All seem cut from the same cloth. Great plate discipline, all three.

We need to play Prado, Conrad, Yunel, Chipper, Mac, Diaz every day. I wish we could play Ross every day too. Can Ross play anywhere else? Although I think he’s a better defensive catcher than Mac. Mac on first next year would be good, but then where will we put Chipper? Add a big bopper in that lineup and look out.

Back to Blauser. I loved that guy. Great D, great clubhouse presence, great sense of humor and he could get hot with the bat on occasion. I’ll never forget a cold, rainy day in Chicago, seeing Jeff hit 3 home runs. Totally in the power zone that day.

    Chinoccio and Dirt… a pitcher’s dream.

From an article on new words in the Merriam-Webster dictionary: Here are some, along with the year in which Merriam-Webster researchers first found them used in an English-language publication, and their meanings:

Fan fiction (1944): stories involving popular fictional characters that are written by fans and often posted on the Internet.

Flash mob (1987): a group of people summoned (as by e-mail or text message) to a designated location at a specified time to perform an indicated action before dispersing.

Sock puppet (1959): a false online identity used for deceptive purposes.

Alright, color me stupid…fine by me. But I am beyond confused.
    1. Since when to two words become ‘one word’ in a dictionary?
    2. Moreso, since the supposed ‘word(s)’ were first used in the year shown, how does the definition relate to how it was used then? Was the internet being held ‘top secret’ in Roswell all these years? Do any of you recall sending e-mails and text messages in 1987.

In 1959, I knew what a sock puppet was…and the only thing online, was the laundry!

And Salty, you mentioned in your excellent research on runs scored…
    In the 80’s, teams averaged a low of 4.0 runs/game (1981…recession?)

Strike year…man, I about gave up on the game that year. Same thing after 1994…between working nights and having a lot of cold water thrown on my love of the game are two reasons I barely have any feelings or memories of the Braves winning the world series in 1995…

So many, including me thought Andruw was toast. Very glad to see he’s made a comeback…if someone who seemed pretty stubborn can turn it around, surely Frenchy will as well…he’s younger, and tries…but it sure won’t be here, will it???

Andruw may get his swing back (he may also lose it again for long stretches) but he won’t get his knees back and he loves his cheeseburgers too much to run like he used to. That whole, growing older, reduced metabolism and not having any self discipline or self awareness thing can do wonders to an old baseball body.

AJ is destined for DH or bench hitter in the AL. He has no business in the NL. Please don’t let him come to Atlanta. Bobby’d put him back at cleanup.

In the meantime and back to the current Braves…

Just figured out why Cox is starting French instead of Diaz. Matty has gone 13 for 26 and French is 3 for 21. So, it makes perfect sense, starting French… he has to catch up.

Bobby does not like players like Diaz showing up his boys.

You know… if I decided to drink too much one night and lost my sense of good taste I could damn near go all Hee-haw Robertistic on the subject. But I won’t… and I won’t. Maybe.

Fortunately, a small dose of success makes for good medicine, too. Still…it’s a parenting issue come home to roost after a while. Lets see now…Red Sox, 51 wins, and only one pitcher, Okajima has been in 40 games. Papelbon has been in 38 games. And thats with Brad Penny averaging 5.5 innings a game, Dice K going 4.5 innings in his 8 starts.

Great…six relievers in baseball have made at least 42 appearances…three are Braves. Now, I’m no math whizkid…but if we have one of the best rotations in baseball, and we do…then why are wearing these guys out?

I do not like Bobby’s book. He needs to burn it…shred it…lose it…pickle it…whatever. He’s tainting his own legacy by the day. And it’s a gross injustice to guys like Moylan and Gonzales who are coming off surgeries.

As I continue my rant…let’s see if Cox tosses the book in exchange for the wrong book when Hudson returns. I can hear Bobby now: “He was still gettin’ it up there at 65 in 7th…not bad for your first start in over a year…and especially after 115 pitches.”

Wait…espn must have had the wrong stats, I think Frenchy’s were mixed. I saw for Church 2 HR’s 22 RBi’s and .250 Ave, .280 OBP.
Actually, .280 BA, .332 OBP. Better than Frenchy for sure.
digging more, .167 BA against lefties, .310 against righties! Hmm, a platoon with Diaz, that might be a pretty decent platoon! Not a bopper for sure, but if they would just put the one guy hitting homers down the lineup, our offense will definitely be better. It’s better right now.

French to the Mets. Wow. Just… wow.

Just heard the news on the pre-game radio show while driving home. Mets? I’m glad Braves don’t have him any longer. It was beyond pitiful watching him struggle. Maybe this’ll be a head-clearing move and he’ll snap out of his bad paradigm. His new hitting instructor will probably break him down a bit more and no doubt do it with more authority. Home town pressure is one thing… but Mets fans are brutal. If he continues his slumping ways Jeff’s psyche may be broken beyond repair. Or the change will get him going. It’ll be interesting to witness from a distance.

Was hoping he’d go to an AL or non-division team so I could pull for him, sorta, on occasion. That’ll be a bit harder now since he’s with a… THE division rival. My bet is that he’ll be released after the season.

He’d better grow up quick up there.

Six major league pitchers have 42 or more appearances this year; three are with Los Bravos! I nominate Sir Cox for ‘dog-dom’! I’m guessing Frenchy tested his last nerve…and Bobby has mine. Never thought it would come to this…shoulda known: never, say ‘never’!

    Another volunteer suggestion… Klobber.

He needs to get his derriere back in here and redeem himself by writing the next lead. And clean up that saloon afterwards. Getting musty in there. Being in a musty place is not good, especially if you’re in there every night. Oh, uh, by the way, need to restock the rooskie makin’s.

Salty, I honestly don’t believe Cox wanted to lose French and that the trade was probably something he rejected for a long time. No matter what is written by beat reporters, Bobby wanted Jeff around. I’m just guessing but, that’s my opinion.

As far as Bobby being the new dog… yep. Same as the old dog… Cox needs to go. Yet, as much as he needs to go for the team he needs to stay for his own interests, which don’t include home obviously. He may be around until the hook is brought out for him. Shame, really. Every day Bobby manages he loses another piece of his legacy.

Yes, the one thing that is constant in life is change. For better or worse, change happens…

I too wish Frenchy well, hopefully his new hitting coach will spot something to get him turned around.

Ryan Church is a good player, I don’t know what he did to get on Jerry Manuel’s bad side but the Metropolitans have been looking to move him for a while.

He can also serve as a catcher so maybe Ross can be use in games a bit more.

Has anybody noticed the new look of the Braves? With the trades, we’re seeing players that look like blue-collar, gritty, tough guys. No pretty boys. Not ugly mind you… just not Jeff and Kelly-like. More like guys you’d expect on the Boston roster. More importantly, we’re filling in with guys I think will scrap.

Look around at the new, emerging Braves. Guys like Mac, Ross, Prado, McLouth, Church. Hoss fits and has always been a tough machine. Hopefully he won’t start blowing gaskets too often. Does Yunel fit into that? He could, but he’d better toughen up. Kotch has the scruffy look but he’s not the player he appeared to be when we got him or the player he needs to be to keep him. Garrett could be and has been a tough warrior but I’m afraid his train has left the station.

Can you imagine Yuke at first on this team? Dreaming, I know. Still, we’re building a roster of tough, scrappy dudes that opposing pitchers won’t want to blatantly nail with a pitch, lest the bench clearing that would ensue would not be pretty.

Bosox south. That’s pretty in my book.

Whoops, forgot to throw Conrad in that bunch. You know I like that kid. He fits the new profile like a glove. Diaz too, although I expect him to be trade bait. Infante is right in the thick of it and should be playing every day for Atlanta when his hand heals. He’s a keeper. How’s that hand coming along? We have good options with filling in the infield, even if Chipper is out from time to time. I’m missing somebody…

Maybe we let Yunel mature in a warm climate, say… Houston. Trade him for Miguel Tejada. Ok, Ok, still dreaming.

Here’s hoping Embree comes back from the broken tibia. Winced when I read the description of Prado’s line drive that hit him and the bone crack heard all the way to the outfield. Alan has been a horse for al lotta years. Returning from this may be tough at this stage of his career. Godspeed in recovery for Alan.

Bear, your 11:24… it is sad. He’s developed friendships with those guys.

Jeff could’a been something in Atlanta, but a series of things happened. His batting was not the problem, it was the symptom. Whatever mindset that got him into such a two-year slump was the same mindset that made him think he could automatically go from minor leagues to superstardom and a huge contract overnight. He refused a very nice, more than fair offer before Mac got his.

But he declined. The same mindset was evident when he pouted about going back to Gwinnett to work on his swing. We all saw how that played out.

The same mindset was behind the comments recently about “not filling out the game card” and “playing somewhere”, etc. Methinks the attitude got him into his slump. Whether it was a lack of self awareness, a sense of entitlement, an inability to focus, an eye problem or a combination of all (which I believe was the case, things didn’t work out as a “home town high school standout becomes superstar in home town” fairy tale like he and so many seemed to think.

No, he shouldn’t have turned down that contract offer. Lucky for the Braves, he did.

Now he has a chance, away from the high expectations of home town to either get his act together or to use this as a negative experience. If he chooses the latter, he just got a one way ticket to Palookaville.

No Country For Old Men…. Pitchers are becoming targets… Embree is not the first hurler to get nailed this year and certainly won’t be the last. It just reiterates the importance of being able to field your position and having quick reflexes when you are only about 55 feet from home plate when you finish your delivery.

Scrappy of scrap? Same but different.. I don’t mind players having a tough gritty attitude but you still need a good bit of talent to play in the majors. There were a couple of plays last night that reminded us of why Conrad and Hernandez won’t be mentioned by many as being an All-Star double play combo.

Still, a good stick can cover for a lot of ills with the glove…

The interviews with Ryan Church gives the impression that he believes he will be an everyday guy with the Braves. I hope he accepts a lessor role as a platoon guy for a while.

As much as I like Diaz, I hate that gosh awful swing of his… looks as if he it trying to swat a misquote with his bat. He has a quick swing, I just think it would benefit both him and the Braves greatly if he would level it out a bit.

Escobar has fallen out of favor with Miss Josie for sure… Not sure why but I think it has something to do with his attitude. Failure to accept responsibility for his own actions.. Showboating… Anyway, he would be a very attractive player to be traded if the Braves had a good replacement available for him.

Yes, the Braves are looking more and more like Frank Wren’s team. Now, the only thing left will be to trade Chipper and hire a new manager…. it will happen, just don’t know when….

The facts are this, General Managers hire and fire players, managers and coaches… Sometimes the communicate with the manager, sometimes they don’t. Usually the coaches go about their business until they are told otherwise.

While I am certain Bobby knew Frenchy was on the block, I doubt he knew the deed was done until after the fact.

I think it is amazing that Bobby has hung on this long, of course Dayton Moore was the real heir apparent before he signed with Kansas City. The Frank Wren deal was second choice for JS.

Anyway, while I find it difficult to root for the Mets under any circumstance, I hope Francouer does well there. In any case, he will be playing for a few more years, he just won’t be making as much money as he expected.

Speaking of which, I wonder how much Andruw will sign for next season? He sure isn’t hurting himself in Texas is he?

The Francoeur deal: “The Mets receive $270,218 as part of the trade to equalize salaries.”Church immediately sent Chipper Jones a text message.

Loved this from Church: “They’re (Mets) going to have to change up a lot of signs. I know everything,” Church said. “I’ll definitely fill them in.”

Church tried to play after his second concussion last year but struggled to shake the symptoms.

“Around the league, people are saying it could have been handled different, but it was just one of those things where we were in uncharted waters,” he said. “Being a baseball player, you want to play. You want to be there every day. And it just so happened it didn’t help.”

Manuel on Francoeur: “”No. 1, I think he’s a tremendous defensive player, even though I’m not looking for defense right now,” Manuel said before laughing a dozen times.” Huh??

Okay, another interesting and productive day. After lying around and doing absolutely nothing yesterday as Josie went with the grand kids to Kings Dominion (like Six Flags.. only different), I actually felt like getting out of the house today.

We skipped the Hanover Tomato Festival (World Famous here locally) and went in the opposite direction to the gun show. A point of observation.. If the gun dealers don’t support Obama’s re-election bid in four more years I will be very surprised…

I mean Shazam!!!! the prices for guns and ammo are outrageous… It has jumped a good 50% since his election… No shortage of buyers either. I was temped to rent a booth and sell my collection on the spot. Instead, I bought a very nice Winchester Mdl 94 saddle ring carbine that was chambered in 357 mag. I had been looking for one for about 3 years now so I felt pretty fortunate.

Anyway, Josie, ever the good sport, went along with me and found the coins and jewelry vendors to keep her busy. A lot can be said for a gal who doesn’t mind walking the aisles looking at the mirade of firearms for sale. She is not much on hunting but a better fisherman can not be found. Pretty good for a city girl I would say….

A few random thoughts on the way our boys played the game last night:

Mac is our all-star. He should be and deserves it, but man… he really needs to improve his defense. Passed ball right down the middle of the plate. Yeow. Maybe glasses were fogged, dunno.

Prado was lollygagging to third and almost got thrown out running the bases, then on defense, after taking an easy grounder he waved off the pitcher and did such a slow shuffle over to first he barely beat the runner. Two very easy plays that he almost messed up. Hope success doesn’t go to his head. It’s way too early for that.

Conrad showed the ability to play very well at second, and he also showed the ability to play not so well. I really like this kid and he has some pop, but I hope his D gets more consistent. He’s just up to the bigs, so I expect he’ll settle down. Hopefully.

    Diory… uh, where Yunel at?

Chipper. Hoss. It’s good when he can be in the lineup. Changes everything. Hopefully he’ll get some rest over the break and go on a tear.

Jair once again showed that he’s an ace in the making. And two hits. And two ribby’s. Nice game JJ.

McLouth is a player. He may not make highlight films every game but he shows up to play every game.

Church’s box score was not impressive. The way he almost hit a grand slam only to be robbed on the deep warning track and the way he later scorched the line drive that Helton snared was impressive. I like.

Garrett Anderson looks as though he is inconvenienced by having to walk to the batters box and even more inconvenienced in the field having to run and stuff. I know, it’s probably just his casual demeanor that I mistake for loafing, but still… if you’re gonna act all nonchalant like Manny being Manny, you gotta hit like Manny.

Diaz can look so bad and other times just rake. If somebody could ever figure out how to get him consistent he’s be a real threat. Wonder where TP fits into that project?

Moylan… yikes. Either he’s overused (which he is), or he’s not fully recovered (which he isn’t), or the washed-up Moylan catapulted to the MLB right out of WBC experiment is not sustainable. Not sure.

Acosta looks better this year than ever before. Much greater mound presence, greater command and seems to have picked up some speed and movement. I’m surprised he’s not used more. As soon as I say that, he’ll be brought out every night for weeks until his arm falls off.

Soriano was lights out. I think he’s at his best when a leadoff hitter accidentally pokes one that falls in just over the shortstops head for a bloop hit. That really ticked him off. The next three batters had to pay for that by suffering the wrath of a very annoyed closer. Pity those opponents that have to bat against Raffy following a bloop hit.

Did I miss anyone? Oh, forgot the manager. Not sure what Bobby did last night. He waddled out to the mound once on a pitching change. Gotta admit, his arm/wrist signal for a lefty or righty is the best in the game. Like a royal wave that is so practiced and has become so subtle in it’s minimal motion that the pen must watch TV to even see it. He and Chino need to rent a Victoria Principal tape and skip the buffet a few weeks. Other than that, Bobby seemed to watch the whole game just fine. That’s something.

Anyhoo, that’s how the boys looked from over here on the coast.

Classic loss… snatching defeat from the jaws… that’s another one squarely on Cox. Gross mismanagement of the pen.

Sometimes I wonder if during the game he forgets we have more than the few of his favored overused pitchers du jour available?

Not a pretty loss and all of our rivals won today, adding injury to insult. Wasted a great outing by Conrad and then basically insulted him by removing him in the bottom 9th for Diory. In my book you gotta give the guy a chance to screw up before you yank him after the game he had. Had we held on to win he would’ve been player of the game.

Some players step up their game and some are transformed when they get to the bigs. I’m hoping that’s the case for Conrad. He just needs a chance.

Yes, I know… it’s widely reported that Brooks is not that good defensively, but for the most part he’s looked very good since he got here.

    Sometimes ‘conventional wisdom’ ain’t.

Ten lead headlines and ideas for Bear:

    1. Why Bobby must go… 150 reasons off the top.

    2. The lofty goal of .500 ball by the All-Star break is not what we expected or aspired to in the Spring. Is it?

    3. An overview of the new, young and not so young kids that have arrived this year.

    4. The glass of first half results is half full. No, it’s half empty. Um…

    5. It’s early. Well, not that early. But it’s not late either. Not that late. Later than early.

    6. When will the Braves get the big bopper? If no trade is made, when will the Braves get bopped from contention?

    7. Who will be the next pitching injury due to Bobby’s bullpen, uh, strategy? Do we need a pitching Czar? WWBOD?

    8. Will Chino get fed up with his role of hispanic arbitrator, interpreter and bench coach or will he just, well, get fed?

    9. Who on the field will step up, rise to the occasion and valiantly lead the Braves to postseason? Trick question…

    10. Why I love writing leads for Braves and Stuff and why I shall never, ever steal identities from Stuffville residents.

Hope these help. Chop chop.

Ok… Bear made a funny. So, I wrote the last lead (well it was a post that got sorta confiscated and repurposed, so it wasn’t exactly going out of my way to focus on and write anything special. Normally I’d be happy to write the next one but I’m flat out of time now. Was enjoying some rare R&R around Stuffville, yapping away, bein’ my silly verbose self and such, but it’s now back to focusing on the non-silly grind for the weeks ahead.

Sorry for the “books” on the blog. Well, not really sorry since I do it for entertainment purposes (my own), but regrets if they annoy. That would be the opposite of my intention.

Anyhoo, y’all have a good’un. Hope the Braves get some rest and renewed fire and hope that Mac does good and smacks a home run in the AS game.

2 very fun observations/happenings from the weekend:

Saturday night, I bemoaned the fact that Garret Anderson was at bat with runners on. Mrs. Raisins asked me why? I answered, “Watch, he’ll ground out weakly to 2nd and loaf down the line and maybe make it half way before the throw reaches Helton.” At which point he grounded out weakly to 2nd and loafed down the line and maybe made it half way before the throw reached Helton. She just turned and looked at me… 😀

We were listening to the game while driving yesterday. Don Sutton made the dumb comment on a fly ball, “If this one comes down, there will be a Brave under it.” Mrs. Raisins looked at me and said, “Did he say if it comes down?” We laughed, and she proceeded to rip apart his calling of the game for the rest of the afternoon. He really is not a very good play-by-play guy. That, plus he was worse than usual yesterday. Now, I am no fan of Sutton anyway, but listening to Mrs. Raisins shred his game-calling was better than the game itself. I think she would do a great play-by-play job… 😀

Na guys… was a serious post but wasn’t any serious issue or problem or anything. If anyone knows that my posts are long it’s moi. Like James Michner only without the writing ability. 😀

Just popped in between grindstones. It’s gonna be a week from, well not a heavenly week. Raisins is back. Hope a good time was had. Yes, Sutton is not a good play-by-play guy. Wrong accent on strikes and balls always drove me crazy. Since he’s back he thinks he needs to talk about everything but the game. Too many boring stories and too many Don recollections. Can you imagine he and Joe Morgan paired up? Yikes. Remember how he drove Skip nuts? They didn’t get along very well. Had to be separated.

Boog and Joe aren’t any better at PBP. Talk about everything and everyone not on the field. Boog called a line drive when the hit was a flair. Etc. If they’d just pay attention to the game and call what was actually happening, when it was happening, most of their job would be done with great improvement. Add a little color here and there is all needed. Then again, not much color in either of those guys. Not many Skip’s around.

    Gotta scoot. Y’all behave.

Thanks goodness inspiration has struck V and Salty, cuz…I had nothing. Less than nothing.

V, I guess we will have to agree to disagree on the bullpen. And as I said before, this isn’t all on Bobby. If the offense was better, we could leave starters in longer(if the braves had the lead,or the game wasn’t 2-1 braves) but still…we have many arms down there, and too few are pitching too often. Boone Logan has only been in 4 games since June 30th. Perhaps yesterday, going 2 scoreless innings, will give Bobby more confidence in him.
From DOB on the 10th(I assume before we knew Gonzo had the elbow issue)

…Perhaps having Gonzalez pitch on three straight days might not be such a good idea, either, at least for the time being. Because here’s the thing: Gonzalez has been lit up twice in his past six appearances, and I doubt it’s a coincidence that both times it was when he pitched for the third consecutive day.
… He has been used an awful lot in the first half, as have the Braves’ other top relievers — Rafael Soriano, Peter Moylan and Eric O’Flaherty.
In fact, here’s a fairly stunning stat: Only six major league relievers have pitched in more 42 games this season, and the Braves have half of them. That’s right, three of the six are Braves.
Moylan, who had Tommy John elbow surgery 13-1/2 months ago, leads the major leagues with 47 relief appearances. The American League leaders have 42 appearances.
Tied for second in the majors, with 45 apiece, are Gonzalez and the Mets’ Pedro Feliciano.
Three are next in a tie fo fourth with 44 appearances, including O’Flaherty.

Gonzo is 26 months past his surgery. Moylan is just 13 months past his.
I just don’t know how you can say Moylan sucks. Well, his ERA does, but he has come in countless times with runners on and gotten a double play to keep the other team from big inning. And knowing how Bobby’s mind works, he’s thinking, hey, he only threw 5 pitchs that inning, somehow forgetting the 40 + pitches warming up, and then 8 more practice pitches off the mound. So, in he comes again the next day, and the next day, and the next day.
Like I said above, 8 games in 11 days, not games, days…who pitches in that many games in that short a stretch these days??? Who throws that much a little more than a year out from Tommy John??? No one ever has.
At this point, Hanson is the only starter that needs to be babied(Well, Javy might with the strained stomach muscle) unless the game is out of hand, they need to be going deeper into games.

Obama to be in Fox broadcast booth

ST. LOUIS — President Barack Obama will be in the Fox broadcast booth for Tuesday night’s All-Star game.

Fox spokesman Lou D’Ermilio said Monday that Obama will join Joe Buck and Tim McCarver for the telecast from Busch Stadium but that the inning had not yet been determined.

Obama is scheduled to throw out the ceremonial first pitch, and Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols will be on the receiving end. –AP

Well, then it looks like I have a 4 day All-Star break, too. I’d rather watch a rash develop.

By the way, I don’t remember who said it, but it bears repeating. I wonder if he’ll throw Pujols a curve like he has the rest of the country…
