83: Here’s Your (Braves) Rant!!!

Comments and articles herein are the intellectual property and opinions of the writers and may not be copied without permission of the writers.

Like many of us long-time Braves fans, our allegiance wasn’t forged since 1991. Oh, no…and oh, dear, for otherwise, our patience would have been sapped long ago. Nope, for me, I harken (poetic, ain’t it!?!) back to the late 60’s/early 70’s, to the insufferable Milo Hamilton and the equally HamiltonMiloinsufferable Brave’s teams. But they were our Braves…and we clung to hope…cause that’s what true fans do. Milo left…we stayed through thick (you have to imagine) and thin(ner)!

The fact is, those earlier times were easier to be fans in the strictest sense. We enjoyed the game for what it was…and feasted on the occasional teaser (1982-83). The only other intrigue, ’69 aside, was Aaron’s chase of the Babe … Garber halting Rose’s streak … Horner jumping straight from college to the Braves, and homering … and Murphy’s exploits. Otherwise it’s pretty slim pickings.

But, we had Ernie, Skip, and Pete to keep us entertained…many times to the point they forgot the game, which was a good thing.

Now, we have reasonably good talent each year, but a Hall of Fame manager acting like there is one book to manage by … and it sucks! How is it we have one of the top three starting rotations in baseball, and a solid relief core, yet have three of the only six MLB pitchers with over 42 appearances this year? Please, someone … explain … pound it through this thick skull, ‘cause it ain’t computin’!

Yesterday was yet another loss squarely on Bobby’s shoulders. The seeds were sown three days ago, with his inane use of the bullpen…yet again. Hey, Bobby! Actions have consequences. The key to managing is not just for today but also for tomorrow! Hello! Anybody home?

I looked on incredulously as he pulled Medlen in the 5th…the 5th…no oneMedlenK out and a four-run lead. One reliever has already gone home with a sore elbow! If he’s gonna yank Medlen, how patient will he be with the relievers?

Typically, he wasn’t. “Boone, go get ‘em.” “Manny, loosen up!” “You too, O’Flaherty!” “Peter, you’re not tired, are ya?” “Hey, ‘New Guy’, go do a Joey Devine for us!”

Give me a freakin’ break! The bullpen is to hold the lead, when it’s time to hold a lead! Not for the manager to panic with a four-run margin…in the 5th inning. Either a player learns to work through some level of adversity – or he never learns. Hey, Medlen…you tried…prob’ly coulda done alright, ya know? As it is, good luck getting any confidence in your current role…but good luck with your new club!

Folks, don’t try to make sense of CoxFarewellthis; it’s why it’s a RANT! If there is any, it’s purely accidental – well, ‘cept for this: Bobby, it’s time to enjoy the sunsets!

~Salty~

Get opine Salty. Can’t really disagree with you. As much as I love and respect Bobby Cox, the time likely has come for someone to pull the plug. Frank Wren does not seem to mind doing the dirty work either.

Oh by the way, The Nats threw Manny Acta under the bus today.

Very well put Salt man!!! I remember Milo Hamilton, but just a bit. I was probably so happy to get TBS and baseball in a non baseball city(Jacksonville Florida) I didn’t pay much attention to him.

Hey, ‘New Guy’, go do a Joey Devine for us!
For sure! Missed the end of the game, but when I saw the new guy came up in that situation…man….And no doubt Acosta will get sent down, or not used for 4-5 games for “failing” in the game, his 3rd straight outing. Sigh….

Actually needed some mental diversion from the rat race out there. Nice rant up there Salty! Boy, you do go way back with the Braves. Even though some of us went through all those days of less than halcyon teams, one never gets used to losing. Well, maybe they do at Wrigley, but nothing can prepare a fan for losing. No getting used to it… I hope that by the time we begin to settle into a low expectation the Braves will make a run at it again. Hopefully not when we’re all too old and senile to care.

Very sorry to hear about your puppy. My condolences, friend. Ditto what Gil said. I’ll be meeting my old English Setter, Georgia at Heaven’s gate. Although gone for ten years I still think of her often and have many fond memories. She was quite a pal.

Ber… I don’t see any way that a trade for Holliday would happen. First, the Braves aren’t giving up another batch of prospects for a rental ala Teixeira. Second, Holliday’s numbers outside of Coors are not nearly as impressive as his numbers there. Third, Yunel’s bat at SS is at least as valuable as Holliday’s at OF straight up. Even though the Braves do not really have any real OF’s not named Nate, OF bats are much easier to dig up than SS bats. That is someone in Oakland dreaming a nice dream…

Oh, man, Raisins! That HURTS!!! Put ice on it. Makes me wince just to think of it!

I recently got an email from a cousin out in New Mexico. She and her husband have a ranch out there and she’s always outside amongst the bugs.

She swears up and down that if she tucks a Bounty(?) drier sheet into a shirt pocket so that most of it is out in the open, that bugs don’t bother her. I tried it with mosquitoes and got mixed results. The ‘skeeters didn’t bother the area right around the sheet, but bite the daylights of areas farther away – feet, ankles, etc.

Have no idea what effect, if any, it has on other critters!

Must have been traumatized when someone dropped her off at the pound. Yes, she was a pound kitty… She definitely has trust issues.

TP to DC eh? I suspect Riggleman will get a pass to at least the end of the season. However, my guess is they will want a person of color, not a colorful person, as the manager in DC… Fits the profile of the City… They are not really into changing that…

My experience has been that you cannot go too easy on the rookies, of course they have been coddled all their lives so they don’t respond to tough love all that well. Perhaps their should be mandatory boot camp rather than million dollar signing bonuses. I don’t know if it will make them better ballplayers but it sure would make them into better men.

Iran has frequent plane crashes often because of bad maintenance of its aging aircraft. Tehran blames the problem in part on U.S. sanctions that prevent Iran from getting spare parts for some planes.

Uh…that is the point of sanctions, is it not? To disrupt capabilities? But in a martyr-centric society, you just rock on as normal, placing blame on the Evil West, discounting airline tickets for the promise of a glorious afterlife! Pathetic…warped….sick….a waste of life.

I see the opine Saltman! Sanctions seem to do something right around nothing, it seems to me. I remember with the sanctions placed on Iraq between the first and 2nd war, there were many folks saying how the U.S. was starving Iraqis, no money for medicine for babies what with the terrible sanctions. There was footage of poor babies trotted out for an all too willing press to view, and show footage of worldwide. Then, after we invade Iraq, we finally found out the same poor dead children were put on ice, and shown over and over again…made about as much news as the Food for oil scam…in other words, right next to no coverage.

Tehran blames the maintenance woes of its airlines in part on U.S. sanctions that prevent Iran from getting spare parts for some planes. However, Caspian Airlines – an Iranian-Russian joint venture founded in 1993 – uses Russian-made Tupolevs whose maintenance would be less impaired by American sanctions.

In February 2006, a Russian-made TU-154 operated by Iran Airtour, which is affiliated with Iran’s national carrier, crashed during landing in Tehran, killing 29 of the 148 people on board. Another Airtour Tupolev crashed in 2002 in the mountains of western Iran, killing all 199 on board.

The crashes have also affected Iran’s military. In December 2005, 115 people were killed when a U.S.-made C-130 plane, crashed into a 10-story building near Tehran’s Mehrabad airport. In Nov. 2007, a Russian-made Iranian military plane crashed shortly after takeoff killing 36 members of the elite Revolutionary Guards.

Yep, poor maintenance and aging planes. The perfect storm for disaster…

And this is interesting too…remember me seeing Alex White on video via mlb.com and saying the braves should sign him with the first pick??? I did, honest!

    79: Wandering Around the Ballpark….

Anyway, was reading A long, and interesting Peter Gammons column on signings, international mainly(funny, you can read the whole column even though it’s supposedly insider column http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/print?id=4316025&type=blogEntry ) when I saw this little tidbit.

“The slotting system doesn’t work because teams like the Yankees, Tigers and Red Sox don’t care what the commissioner tells them,” one general manager said. “So the teams that are poorer or beholden to Bud Selig can’t draft the players they want. Look at what happened to the Pirates all those years. But now what is happening is that because of the job Selig and MLB has done with revenue sharing, there is a lot of money out there. So rather than fight with Selig, they’re throwing it around at 16-year-olds in the Dominican.”

The Orioles, for instance, selected Hobgood because he would sign a contract according to the salary slotting recommendations set by the commissioner’s office. The Reds, with the seventh pick in the draft, and the Braves, at No. 8, passed on North Carolina pitcher Alex White because he wouldn’t sign for the figure set by the commissioner’s office. But the Orioles may go for Sano for more than $3.5 million; meanwhile, Hobgood earned $2.4 million. Go figure.

Isn’t nice to have corporate ownership that doesn’t want Selig mad at them? 🙄

Gil…I noted the Caspian plane wasn’t US made. My issue is the media even bringing up the issue. Anything to foment hatred of the US around the globe. My cynicism won’t allow me to believe much of the world is seeing/hearing there was a plane crash that is a result of US sanctions preventing parts from being obtained (like I think the black market isn’t viable). And my cynicism won’t let me think that same part of world would ever question why an unsafe plane would be flown. Not in a society that relishes martyrdom.

The Escobar rumor: While the Braves have made it known they are taking calls from teams interested in potential Yunel Escobar trades, I’m told that three’s nothing to the report out of Oakland of discussions between the teams about an Escobar-and-prospects trade for Oakland’s Matt Holliday and Orlando Cabrera.
Not saying they haven’t talked to Oakland at some point about Holliday.
Just saying the Braves haven’t talked to them about trading Escobar and prospects for Holliday and Cabrera, two pending free agents. That’d be a bad deal for the Braves, trading Escobar and prospects for two players they’d probably only keep for 2-1/2 months. (Holliday is a Scott Boras client, just FYI).
Has anyone noticed that Escobar, who’s not eligible for arbitration until after the 2010 season, is hitting .293 with seven homers, 44 RBI and a .790 OPS, compared to Holliday’s we’re-not-at-Coors-anymore .276-8-43 and .792 OPS?
GM Frank Wren has said several times that the Braves are reluctant to trade top prospects these days, like most teams are in this new era. Wren has also told me that he didn’t envision the Braves taking on a lot of new payroll via trade.
And the A’s aren’t going to pay most of Holliday’s contract to dump him. Not when they’ve got teams like the Cardinals interested in him, teams that won’t demand the A’s pick up most of what he’s owed from his $13.5 million salary.
By the way, talked to someone here today who told me the Cardinals are interested in Escobar. He also told me they wouldn’t trade Ryan Ludwick now.
Same guy told me the Braves tried to trade Rafael Soriano to the Cardinals last winter for – are you ready — OF Joe Mather. And Cardinals wouldn’t do it.
Don’t know if that’s entirely accurate, but it’s certainly possible it was proposed by the Braves, given the injury-plagued season Soriano had in 2008 and his $6.1 mill salary this season.
Needless to say, the Cardinals wish they had done that deal, since Soriano would be their closer right now.

While the new 49-foot-tall, state-of-the-art Coca-Cola bottle won’t be officially unveiled until Thursday’s game at Turner Field, the folks at Coca-Cola and the Atlanta Braves have given us a small advance taste of what to expect this week. Braves fans already know that the new 21st century version will replace the original Coca-Cola Sky Field bottle, which was perched high above left field for the past 12 years. We’re told the new bottle will feature “a high-resolution, programmable screen serving as the bottle’s famous red label with lights that can produce millions of different colors.” The new bottle will come to life each time Atlanta’s home team hits a home run in the stadium while continuing to provide the traditional fireworks celebration for which the original bottle was known. The bottle’s exterior is made of a polycarbonate high-impact material and traced in 3,000 tri-colored LED lights, each capable of producing over 16 million different colors. The new bottle will be officially unveiled by Coca-Cola and Braves executives, including legend Hank Aaron during a special ceremony at home plate before the start of Thursday’s game against the New York Mets. While the new 49-foot-tall, state-of-the-art Coca-Cola bottle won’t be officially unveiled until Thursday’s game at Turner Field, the folks at Coca-Cola and the Atlanta Braves have given us a small advance taste of what to expect this week. Bada bing bada boom. 😆 That was hilarious.

Thing is, the new Coke “bottle” is not a bottle, it’s a programmable, polycarbonate, high-resolution, 3000 LED with 16 million colors… billboard TV ad. Just like the giant digital HD screen and the chopping cow… at the end of the day, they are but distractions.

Perhaps the new generation of fans are so attention deficit, they need more than the game on the field to keep them amused.

V, that’s not a bad idea, but it will never happen. Loaf hits just enough to keep himself in there. Besides, you know Bobby. He’d have to hit .211 for 2 months to perhaps get kicked out of the starting lineup. But, there’s hope, he’s hitting .211 so far for July! 😛

Hey V, SG, you will jus LOVE this news story!

    By Matt Cover

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.)
Washington (CNSNews.com) – House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said that job growth and economic recovery would not be harmed by a Democratic plan to increase income taxes by $540 billion to pay for their health-care reform proposal because the tax hikes would not affect small businesses.

Hoyer also said he could not think of any small business owners who make enough money to qualify for the higher taxes.

Speaking at his weekly press briefing on Tuesday, Hoyer said that the proposed tax was merely a surcharge on wealthy individuals, explaining that the tax increases were graduated.

“This is a surcharge,” Hoyer said, “on people making over $280,000 as an individual, $350,000 [per year] as a couple and it’s graduated, it goes up as you reach $1 million in income.”

Asked by CNSNews.com whether such a tax increase would affect small businesses and job creation during a recession, Hoyer said: “I don’t know many small business men or women who are making, themselves $280,000 [per year], so I’m not sure that very many small businesses are going to be affected by this.”

Hoyer also made clear that Democrats were committed to the tax increases, saying his party was determined to pay for its massive health care overhaul–making it “deficit-neutral,” as insisted upon by President Barack Obama.

“We are committed to paying for health care reform,” Hoyer said. “The Senate is committed to paying for health care reform and the president is committed to paying for health care reform. So, we will pay for it.”

Republicans disagreed, saying that no one could rationally believe that a tax increase on job-creators would not effect job creation.

😡 So friggin’ typical of the current regime. Ignorance is bad; arrogance is bad. Ignorance coupled with arrogance is dangerous. As a small business owner, I tremble every day at the thought of what will become of my means of earning a living. I have absolutely zero confidence that my business will even be around in 1 more year, much less until I retire. Of course, retirement will soon be a thing of the past much like the 1 income family. The tax-and-spend liberals did away with that silly notion in the 70’s. Then again, it’s all a gradual movement toward making us all totally dependent on the guv’ment for every small morsel we are meted.

“Please, sir… I want some more.”

Raisins, I hang onto this (amongst others!):

    Ps 37
    King James Bible

    ——————————————————————————–
1 Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity.

2 For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb.

3 Trust in the LORD, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed.

4 Delight thyself also in the LORD: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.

5 Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.

6 And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday.

7 Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass.

8 Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil.

9 For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the LORD, they shall inherit the earth.

10 For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be: yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it shall not be.

11 But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.

12 The wicked plotteth against the just, and gnasheth upon him with his teeth.

13 The LORD shall laugh at him: for he seeth that his day is coming.

14 The wicked have drawn out the sword, and have bent their bow, to cast down the poor and needy, and to slay such as be of upright conversation.

15 Their sword shall enter into their own heart, and their bows shall be broken.

16 A little that a righteous man hath is better than the riches of many wicked.

17 For the arms of the wicked shall be broken: but the LORD upholdeth the righteous.

18 The LORD knoweth the days of the upright: and their inheritance shall be for ever.

19 They shall not be ashamed in the evil time: and in the days of famine they shall be satisfied.

20 But the wicked shall perish, and the enemies of the LORD shall be as the fat of lambs: they shall consume; into smoke shall they consume away.

21 The wicked borroweth, and payeth not again: but the righteous sheweth mercy, and giveth.

22 For such as be blessed of him shall inherit the earth; and they that be cursed of him shall be cut off.

23 The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.

24 Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the LORD upholdeth him with his hand.

25 I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.

26 He is ever merciful, and lendeth; and his seed is blessed.

27 Depart from evil, and do good; and dwell for evermore.

28 For the LORD loveth judgment, and forsaketh not his saints; they are preserved for ever: but the seed of the wicked shall be cut off.

29 The righteous shall inherit the land, and dwell therein for ever.

30 The mouth of the righteous speaketh wisdom, and his tongue talketh of judgment.

31 The law of his God is in his heart; none of his steps shall slide.

32 The wicked watcheth the righteous, and seeketh to slay him.

33 The LORD will not leave him in his hand, nor condemn him when he is judged.

34 Wait on the LORD, and keep his way, and he shall exalt thee to inherit the land: when the wicked are cut off, thou shalt see it.

35 I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading himself like a green bay tree.

36 Yet he passed away, and, lo, he was not: yea, I sought him, but he could not be found.

37 Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace.

38 But the transgressors shall be destroyed together: the end of the wicked shall be cut off.

39 But the salvation of the righteous is of the LORD: he is their strength in the time of trouble.

40 And the LORD shall help them, and deliver them: he shall deliver them from the wicked, and save them, because they trust in him.

    from email –

    Subject – 506th Hero dies

What a tribute to those hero’s of our past!

One of the “Band of Brothers” soldiers died on June 17, 2009.

We’re hearing a lot today about big splashy memorial services, i.e. Michael Jackson

I want a nationwide memorial service for Darrell “Shifty” Powers.

Shifty volunteered for the airborne in WWII and served with Easy Company of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, part of the 101st Airborne Infantry. If you’ve seen Band of Brothers on HBO or the History Channel, you know Shifty. His character appears in all 10 episodes, and Shifty himself is interviewed in several of them.

I met Shifty in the Philadelphia airport several years ago. I didn’t know who he was at the time. I just saw an elderly gentleman having trouble reading his ticket. I offered to help, assured him that he was at the right gate, and noticed the “Screaming Eagle”, the symbol of the 101st Airborne, on his hat.

Making conversation, I asked him if he’d been in the 101st Airborne or if his son was serving. He said quietly that he had been in the 101st. I thanked him for his service, and then asked him when he served, and how many jumps he made.

Quietly and humbly, he said “Well, I guess I signed up in 1941 or so, and was in until sometime in 1945 . . . ” at which point my heart skipped.

At that point, again, very humbly, he said “I made the 5 training jumps at Toccoa, and then jumped into Normandy . . . . do you know where Normandy is?” At this point my heart stopped.

I told him yes, I know exactly where Normandy was, and I know what D-Day was. At that point he said “I also made a second jump into Holland, into Arnhem.” I was standing with a genuine war hero . . . . and then I realized that it was June, just after the anniversary of D-Day.

I asked Shifty if he was on his way back from France, and he said “Yes. And it’s real sad because these days so few of the guys are left, and those that are, lots of them can’t make the trip.” My heart was in my throat and I didn’t know what to say.

I helped Shifty get onto the plane and then realized he was back in Coach, while I was in First Class. I sent the flight attendant back to get him and said that I wanted to switch seats. When Shifty came forward, I got up out of the seat and told him I wanted him to have it, that I’d take his in coach.

He said “No, son, you enjoy that seat. Just knowing that there are still some who remember what we did and still care is enough to make an old man very happy.” His eyes were filling up as he said it. And mine are brimming up now as I write this.

Shifty died on June 17 after fighting cancer.

    There was no parade.

No big event in Staples Center.

No wall to wall, back to back, 24×7 news coverage.

    No weeping fans on television.

    And that’s not right.

Let’s give Shifty his own Memorial Service, online, in our own quiet way.

They should be very pretty in a few years… I always remember what my mom said about planting trees in the middle of summer. “Well, if you never plant it, it won’t grow”. it never seemed to make any difference when she planted something, it grew… Including me…

If Francoeur continues hitting with consistency, it will point to one single, solitary problem he had while in a Braves uniform. That same problem remains… in Atlanta.

Even so, I’ll be very surprised to see Jeff sustain this hitting “streak” (three games?). Not wishing failure on him at all… hope he does well (after the series), but his problems were too deeply seated and mechanically out of whack to come out of it quickly, much less instantly.

Although I don’t think Terry has what it takes to be a good hitting coach or manager, TP isn’t the ultimate problem… he’s the symptom.

Cool spell on the coast as we speak. High of 87. Thing is, a dry 95 is more comfortable than a humid 85. Old Savannah truism: it ain’t the heat, it’s the humidity. Still, I’ll take it. If it were not for the heat, humidity and bugs, we couldn’t afford to live here.

Love those Crape Myrtles. Thinking about planting a few myself. There’s one down the street that I try not to covet, that is about 20 feet tall. Beautiful tree.

“Well, if you never plant it, it won’t grow”

Love that. Mom’s and dad’s are so wise. That statement is true for trees and a metaphor for life itself.

You know, it really irks me that the divide between the “haves” and the “have nots” in baseball keeps getting wider. A new report out this morning suggests that the Yankees may be in the best position to acquire Roy Halladay simply based on their ability to also absorb Vernon Wells’ contract. So, for a lesser package than, say… the Cards, the Yankers can acquire the top pitcher in baseball to go with the rest of their expensive rotation, and oh… Vernon Wells to boot.

When you consider that Frank is doing the best he can with the worst ownership in baseball, well at least in the bottom 5, you gotta give the man some credit. Think what he could do with even just $10MM more to play with…

    Something else to think about…

Because of the ridiculous cost of Type A free agents, teams are now investing more $$$ into player development since they pretty much control the costs of those homegrown players for the fist 6 ML seasons. The new phenomenon that results is that teams are now WILLING to let their Type A free agents simply walk at year’s end so that they will receive the compensatory draft picks.

How does this affect the Braves for instance? Well, you’ve heard me harp endlessly that I think one of the 2 closers will be traded given they’re both in their walk years. But maybe not so much. If one or even both leave via free agency, their FA status could net the Braves 2-4 extra picks in the draft – something that is now seen as more desirable than return players.

Another example is Aubrey Huff of the O’s. Being a Type A FA, he’ll net the O’s 2 picks in return for his signing elsewhere for ’10. The O’s, another perpetually rebuilding team, would rather have the picks than anything Huff would likely net via trade.

It will most certainly be an interesting swap season this year…

Let’s look on the bright side, The addition of Brooks Conrad to the line up plus the subtraction of out producer Jeff Francouer should boost the run production to at least the level of mid-pack.

I think the Braves have what they need already, it’s just the matter of if Bobby will just put his best nine on the field everyday.

V, I hate to be fair to Liberty, but they seem a bit more willing to spend than say T/W…and the fans don’t seem to be coming out. Teams like the Reds act like they can’t take on money, and have a downright tiny budget. Cards still draw like crazy, yet they never (Well, since McGuire) make the big trade. pieces. Amazing they can ever compete. Oh yeah, that’s right they did trade J.D. Drew for some hack starter from the Braves.
Look at the Brewers, they could win the central, and likely the NL title with Haladay, but they are Bud Selig’s cheap arse team still.

As for draft picks. I can truly understand a team liking getting back picks, but look what can happen to a team. Brewers let Sabbathia and Sheets go, and thought they were going to have a record bounty of picks. Well, Yankees signed C.C. so they got their 25th pick and a sandwich pick(Yes, I looked it up-ain’t got a…a whatchyacallit for a brain) got nothing for Sheets. Since we sucked so much, we didn’t even give up a pick taking Lowe, right??? Or was it a sandwich pick???

Its a tough call, braves have to think long and hard if they fall out of the race in the next few weeks. Gonzo or Soriano could get hurt, and we get nothing. We also have to offer arbitration to get the picks, what if they accept???

Only the first few picks are protected. Brewers got nothing for Sheets because ha hasn’t signed yet. When he signs, they’ll be compensated. As for Liberty being better than TW, yes they are. But that’s like saying an AMC Pacer is better than a Chevy Monza. They both suck, but I’d take the Pacer over the Monza. But you’re still buying from the “Buy Here Pay Here” lot…

I predict(and you know how good I am at that! 🙄 ) Frenchy will get his act together…eventually. Still think it’s the wrong team for him. Did you all know Nelson Cruz is 29??? with the 22 homers this year, that makes 44 for his entire career! Ryan Ludwick is 31…and has had his 2 best seasons after turning 30. Frenchy is 25. After the Mutts drop him at the end of the season, The Rangers will no doubt pick him up, and he will be reborn. May still have to play half a season in AAA to finally get it together…I have spoken! 😉

Raisins, my lineup is very similar to yours, but I’d sit Anderson on the pinch bench (can one loaf on a bench?) and bring Kotchman in late innings… maybe. Depends on how well Chipper feels physically and how well Conrad is doing and how well Prado is hitting. If Prado needs to fill in for 3B or 2B or isn’t hitting, then I’d bring Kotch in for D.

    1. McLouth CF

Unlike Santa, mere cookies and milk will not do… BO will expect a treat of your unquestioning compliance, your life savings and your freedoms.

However, if you are a conservative or a Republican, own a gun, go to church, drive a pickup, have a nest egg or own a small business, he will not leave the envelope. Instead of promises, you will just receive change. Everybody gets change. You can believe that.

    FREEDOM IS NOT FREE!

Killed in action the week before, the body of Sergeant First Class John C. Beale was returned to Falcon Field in Peachtree City, Georgia, just south of Atlanta, on June 11, 2009 .

The Henry County Police Department escorted the procession to the funeral home in McDonough , Georgia . A simple notice in local papers indicated the road route to be taken and the approximate time.

Nowadays one can be led to believe that America no longer respects honor and no longer honors sacrifice outside the military. Be it known that there are many places in this land where people still recognize the courage and impact of total self-sacrifice. Georgia remains one of those graceful places.

The link below is a short travelogue of that day’s remarkable and painful journey. But only watch this if you wish to have some of your faith in people restored. Please share widely.

Got to thinkin’ ‘bout “nice” being a regional thing. Whether Detroit, Tampa, Walnut Ridge or Topeka, it’s all good. Set me off on a meandering journey to see if there is a connection between region and personality and such. With a little time to kill and an imagination too far out for my own good sometimes, I explored. But instead of regional (that’s been trod upon for centuries), I kept going back, back, back (not in a Berman-like way, mind you) into older, more prehistoric and geologic in search for clues.

North and South. East and West. Love’em all but prefer living right here in the south. Not ‘Turner South’… but My South. But we don’t have the beautiful mountains here on the coast. Wish we did but I’m very satisfied with the southern coastline. Its beauty is subtle, with gently sloping beaches and graceful marshes.

The most beautiful coastlines in the country… no, make that… the most topographically diverse and beautiful coastline would be the windswept, rocky shore of Massachusetts and Maine. The coast of northern California and up to Vancouver is most intensely picturesque

Maybe the coastline appearance is an influence or at least an indicator of the personality of its inhabitants, at least those that have resided in the area for more than a decade at least. No doubt there is a subtle physical and mental evolution derived from and influenced by our environs.

The hard-edged, violent, craggy northeast with the constant intrusion of chilling winter storms are brutal on its land and it’s people. The ‘Nor Easters rudely smack you in the face and send you deep within the protective walls you’ve erected around yourself. When the wind subsides, those emerging are prone to crankiness. It shows over time.

Then you have the contrasting west coast from Big Sur north to Canada, with its intensely beautiful and steep cliffs, liberal amounts of open area and with lofty heights of mountains and hills overlooking the peaceful ocean From those lofty heights it may seem, if you happen to live there, that you are as high above the Pacific as you are the rest of the continent (and people) to your east. Figures.

Then you have the gentle, sloping, sandy beaches of the southern coast that are not intruded upon by the cliffs and rocks created by the earth’s violent separation from the African Plate. Our Pangaean continental split began in the south and rotated clockwise before drifting away, meaning the south has had a longer time free than in the north of our continent. The violence of the past is gone, washed away with the rain, wind and ocean waves. The cliffs have gently migrated, easing into the Coastal Plains from Virginia, south of the Mason Dixon Line to Texas, east of the mountains and out to the continental shelf. Oh, I left out north of Virginia there, but you understand. Perhaps the geologists were wrong about New Jersey being part of, well, us.

No, we have very few harsh, rocky intrusions in our landscape. The hills, cliffs and stones of the mountains to our west and north have turned to sand. It’s our sand… it is where we started, but we high-tailed it long ago. Like their mountainous landscape, those folks are just too abrupt up there and out there. The Southern Coastal Plain has simply had longer to mellow than our Paleozoic and Precambrian neighbors to the north and west. No matter your origin, it’s good to be southern and late Cretaceous, don’t you think? Makes for a nicer, kinder, gentler mix.

Our northern and western critics might say, while they were exploding upward and making tectonic mountains out of molehills that they have a closer kinship with their Pangaean roots, and that without them and their intelligence and sediment, we in the southern coastal plain wouldn’t even exist.

Contrary to those snooty westerners and northerners from the highlands of the mother ship Pangaea, we spent much of our geologic existence under the ocean. That’s fine… the ocean is nice. That makes us younger. And Cretaceous. And Paleogeneish. And smoother. And nicer. We took the best and left the rest, uh, up there in Yankee land and out there on the left coast. And we weren’t covered in glaciers like they were. That’s why they are so cold natured and haughty. So there.

Anyhoo, we southerner plain’ers got our heads above water in the lovely, spirited Neogene days, although we’ve since given back some that we gained in our expansion eastward toward Atlantis. That’s fine too… that’s just the way we are, sharing and all. The fish need a shelf, no? Hey, we may be prone to occasional erosion, but no harm done. We’re continental you might say, give and take. Birds get a little, bee’s get a little and hogs get turned into bacon.

So, the moral to this aimlessly drifting and seemingly never ending story is, the people in the south aren’t necessarily nicer, they just seem that way, which happens to take care of at least half of the equation of “being nice”… actions speaking louder than words and all. Yet, like our modern day northern and western cousins, we derive some influence and personality from our ancient natural environs.

Unlike our Holocene cousins but exactly like the tectonic plates and continental shifting, drifting and geologic evolution of the southern coastal plains and the terrain we call home, as through the sands of time, our people have had a long, long time to meander here (much like this post) and pretty much smooth out.

Bringing all this closer to home, the old-timers of Savannah society want to know whom your “people” are, meaning… did you come on the Mayflower or are you ‘common’. The old society geezers and the younger generations of Savannah do have one thing in common: they all want to know what you drink.

Must be that Cretaceous, under the ocean thing, or maybe on account of that recent unpleasantness we call the intrusion of Pangaean aggression.

Oh, and speaking of drinks… Klobber, make that a Rooskie.

SG, we’re nicer because we were TAUGHT to be nice by mamas, gran’mamas, aunts, teachers, and the ladies next door. If ya messed up, your mama’s telephone would ring with the news.

When you got home, your mama would ’bout skin you alive. And when your Daddy got home, you’d probably git it agin!

What has changed between THOSE days and THESE???

Because American has been dumbed down after 40 years of liberal guv’ment schools and such. Most of the big city, newer generations are suffering from entitlement and bloated opinions of themselves.

So, to answer your question… they are dumb as rocks. Must be an old tectonic shifting thing. They shifted but they never got the drift right. 😆

This is lengthy; could have linked, but it’s one of the most powerful sermons I’ve ever read…and the words ring so very true to this day, in my view. With respect to Sgt. Beale and his fallen comrades through the history of his nation:

Here lie men who loved America because their ancestors generations ago helped in her founding, and other men who loved her with equal passion because they themselves or their own fathers escaped from oppression to her blessed shores. Here lie officers and men, Negroes and whites, rich men and poor . . . together. Here are Protestants, Catholics, and Jews together. Here no man prefers another because of his faith or despises him because of his color. Here there are no quotas of how many from each group are admitted or allowed. Among these men, there is no discrimination. No prejudices. No hatred. Theirs is the highest and purest democracy …

Whosoever of us lifts his hand in hate against a brother, or who thinks himself superior to those who happen to be in the minority, makes of this ceremony and the bloody sacrifice it commemorates, an empty, hollow mockery. To this, then, as our solemn duty, sacred duty do we the living now dedicate ourselves: to the right of Protestants, Catholics, and Jews, of white men and Negroes alike, to enjoy the democracy for which all of them have here paid the price …

We here solemnly swear that this shall not be in vain. Out of this and from the suffering and sorrow of those who mourn this will come, we promise, the birth of a new freedom for the sons of men everywhere.

The sermon was given by Rabbi Roland Gittelsohn, a Marine Corps chaplain, on Iwo Jima, after the fighting had ended. It was intended as part of a non-denominational ceremony, but prejudice and bigotry intervened. Nonetheless, the sermon made its rounds.

In his autobiography, Gittelsohn reflected, “I have often wondered whether anyone would ever have heard of my Iwo Jima sermon had it not been for the bigoted attempt to ban it.”

Kawakami at bat, 2 runners on by walk, Sanatana can’t find the strike zone, count 0-2 and K bunts at a high ball three. Making matters worse, he bunts it right at Santana who turns and throws out Diaz at third.

Very stupid mistake. Did K miss the ‘take’ sign by Snitker? Was he even given the take sign? Did K forget where he was and not even look for a sign by Snitker?

That may have been the game-changing play right there. Dumb.

Sanatana can’t find the strike zone, count 0-2 and K bunts at a high ball three.

Whoops. I pulled a Suttonesque count there. The count was 2-0 on Kawakami, not 0-2. Now hopefully my 5:42 post make some sense at least.

Speaking of Sutton, on our way to dinner last night I listened to the game on the radio. Two innings of Sutton (did you know he was a HOF’er?. He talked about everything, I mean everuything BUT the game. In between his wanderings about potato salad, Hall of Fame, booth banter, with the occasional quickly spurted out, “Diaz lines out to Francoeur”. Does the man think we listen in so that we can hear about his opinions on everything? I don’t. I want to see the game through the words of the play by play. With him you would think every game was a rain delay.

Two and a half innings went by without anyone giving the score. I finally just turned it off in disgust. Good thing I had a nice dinner with wife and friends and missed the game… I was already miffed.

So… what did happen with Yunel? Cox was mad at him? Somebody has to post the story. Please…

OK, I was too curious about the Yunel/Cox situation to wait, so I got off my lazy duff (so to speak) and went to the Braves site to get their PR spin then across the river. Finding news is almost impossible over there, just vents and idiocy for the most part. There must only be about three or five folks over there that are even worth reading.

As far as Yunel goes, seems he missed a call on a Hit and run. Bobby was mad. As you’d expect, there was opposite and diverse blog comments, rarely articulate enough to make sense of. Some blamed Yunel for not swinging, some blamed Cox for even giving the H&R sign, some were just mad at the universe. Here’s a coherent post from Mr. Baseball I clipped that further describes the situation:

Cox is mucho upset with Escobar for missing the hit and run sign. Then again, most observant Braves’ fans are equally upset with Cox for his repeated failings at strategerie.

He’s already wasted 2 of his 5 bench players to pinch run. If the Braves manage to send the game to extras, all they’ll have left is Norton. Why he used Conrad to run for Anderson earlier is befuddling, especially with Jurrjens available and Anderson representing the go-ahead run, not the tying run. There is a difference, especially in the 7th inning.

Given Cox’s history, the likelihood that the Braves will try to trade Escobar is a definite possibility. Cox does not appreciate having to deal with players who offend his old school sensibilities. Even though the Braves have no viable replacement for Yunel, that won’t prevent a deal if Cox is PO’d enough.

Any time the Braves are involved in close games, Cox’s inadequacies as a strategist become a major liability. Sometimes the Braves can overcome them. Most times they can’t.

Now, I didn’t cherry pick a post that happens to align with my perspective on the way Bobby does things, which this one does… I clipped it because it was one of, if not the only post that actually described what happened on the field.

Sounds to me that the h&r call was a bad one. Also read that the pitch that Yunel took was way up and inside.

Also read that Braves left the bases loaded in consecutive innings in a one run game.

SG, after reading what I am going to post, I want to see Yunel traded…and Bobby to retire, posthaste! 😉

Escobar was given a sign telling him to swing at a 2-and-0 pitch from right-hander Sean Green, who had entered the game after Chipper Jones led off the inning with a homer and Brian McCann singled.

With Hernandez pinch-running for McCann, Escobar took the pitch from Green, and Hernandez was thrown out at second. The pitch was inside, and Escobar moved back to keep it from hitting his hands.

TV cameras caught Cox’s expression after the pitch, and he did not look pleased.

When asked about the incident after the game, Cox said, “It was a little inside, three or four inches. … I think he thought it was way inside. It was inside a little bit.”

It wasn’t certain whether Escobar missed the sign or just didn’t think he could do anything with the pitch, because he didn’t answer a question about it. With the hit-and-run sign on, it’s up to the hitter to swing if possible, in order to at least make it more difficult for the catcher to throw out the runner.

One Braves player said that the team’s signs can be confusing at times, but ultimately it is the player’s responsibility to make sure he understands a sign that’s given.

Escobar, who won’t do interviews in English, was asked through relief pitcher Mike Gonzalez to clarify whether he saw the sign or didn’t think there was anything he could do with the inside pitch.

Gonzalez said that Escobar replied, “Talk to me when I get three hits.”

Quick reply before I head back out the door…

Yes, the pitch was inside, but not so much that he could not have at least tried to swing. He did not. The replays showed him look at Snitker, look at the dugout, look back at Snitker… it was plain that he had no idea what the signal was. Erik Karros was quick to point out that it is the hitter’s responsibility to make sure he knows what is called. Yunel had no clue. I love him on the field, but his answer, through Gonzo, was gutless.

As for Bobby, he would have been lambasted if he had not called for the hit and run for being to conservative. He is lambasted for calling it because it failed. He’d be lambasted by many regardless of what is or is not called. Those who do not like him will find any and all to criticize. Likewise, those who defend him won’t see any deficiencies. Me? I think it falls somewhere in between, but I’ll still stick with the proven warrior.

Yunel and Bobby… two wrongs don’t make a right. Bobby’s mistake of calling a hit & run there was a mistake in my opinion, but it’s arguable on both sides by reasonable people. Given the situation, I’d have him swing away (at only a good pitch to drive) and wouldn’t have called a H&R. Bobby’s mistake, if he made one there, is strategic. Bobby’s second mistake was to glare and throw a hissy.

Yunel’s mistake, by not swinging after being given the signal (command) to swing, is fundamental. His second mistake was to make those smartarse comments.

My mistake is having an opinion on the situation without having all the facts straight. My second mistake was wasting my valuable time posting said opinion. 😆

Or… did Snitker use special Spanish hand signals for Yunel? If not, it’s all his fault.

Gil, when you have dementia, it doesn’t make a whole lot of difference WHAT you’re watching. You don’t understand most of it anyway! However, it seems today was the day to watch preachers from 9:00 am non-stop to 8:30 pm.

A respectable lady went into the pharmacy, walked up to the pharmacist, looked straight into his eyes, and said, “I would like to buy some cyanide.”

The pharmacist asked, “Why in the world do you need cyanide?”

The lady replied, “I need it to poison my husband.”

The pharmacist’s eyes got big and he exclaimed, “Lord have mercy!
I can’t give you cyanide to kill your husband! That’s against the law! I’ll lose my license! They’ll throw both of us in jail!
All kinds of bad things will happen! Absolutely not! You CANNOT have any cyanide!”

The lady reached into her purse and pulled out a picture of her husband in bed with the pharmacist’s wife.

The pharmacist looked at the picture and replied, “Well now, that’s different. You didn’t tell me you had a prescription.”

A bit of a rainy dreary day here. Funny, no one predicted rain…

Interesting weekend for me. Josie and I attended an auction Saturday. Silly me, I should have known better than to attend a gun auction on a Saturday. Too many alpha males and folks looking to buy firearms without papers…. Agh… It is not that I could not afford the prices, I just choose to say no…

As part of the deal making with Miss Josie (she does not really care for gun auctions) I promised her a stop by a couple of wineries and a visit to he favorite Italian restaurant (which happens to be in Harrisonburg, VA) about a two hour drive and on the other side of the mountain.

The wine tasting went okay but I don’t think they like my comparison of their products as being somewhere between Boones’ Farm and Mad Dog 20/20… Wine snobs just don’t seem to have much of a sense of humor.

Anyway, the drive across the mountain was pretty but alas, her restaurant was closed for their annual vacation… Great disappointment for Josie in that one. Fortunately, she had purchased a case of vino at our previous stop. Unfortunately, she had no cork screw…Did you know that a complimentary cork screw was not included. Ah well, just another thing to add to my survival kit.

Oh well, the drive was nice and the company was good. it’s always good for a “flatlander” like me to visit the hills, even the modest ones we have here in Virginia.

Obama is Surprised Vets do not want to pay their own Medical Expenses!

Here’s his response when he backed-off from his decision to let the military pay for their war injuries. What an empty headed person he is.

Bad press, including major mockery of the plan by comedian Jon Stewart, led to President Obama abandoning his proposal to require veterans’ private health insurance to cover the estimated $540 million annual cost to the federal government of treatment for injuries to military personnel received during their tours on active duty.

The President admitted that he was puzzled by the magnitude of the opposition to his proposal. “Look, it’s an all volunteer force,” Obama complained. “Nobody made these guys go to war. They had to have known and accepted the risks. Now they whine about bearing the costs of their choice? It doesn’t compute.”

“I thought these were people who were proud to sacrifice for their country,” Obama continued. “I wasn’t asking for blood âm“ just money. With the country facing the worst financial crisis in its history, I’d have thought that the patriotic thing to do would be to try to help reduce the nation’s deficit. I guess I underestimated the selfishness of some of my fellow Americans.”

Typical of an individual who never served a day of his life on active duty. What more could one expect from a politician at the public trough?

Are these quotes legit? On the ‘up and up’? If so, this goes down as singularly the most clueless and disrespectful comment ever made by a President. Selfish…selfish? They ‘volunteer’ to let you, Mr. President put them in harm’s way, and you want to call them selfish? What about the multitude of others who didn’t ‘volunteer’?

Seriously…are these quotes legit…did he really, truly…honestly say these things? Is there a person in uniform, or a veteran of any ilk who can support this man? What a travesty! What an embarrassment! This is leadership? This is change?

    Quoting from snopes.com:

“This item is another entry difficult to classify as either “true” or “false”. It is false in the literal sense that PresBO did not utter the words attributed to him above.

HOWEVER, if the same sentiments had been cast in the third person (rather than a faux quote from PresBO), they couldn’t be dismissed as completely false. They’re an expression of the outrage many people felt about a very real issue, a plan the Obama administration floated in March 2009 to save an estimated $540 million per year by requiring veterans with private medical insurance to use that insurance to cover the costs of treatment for combat injuries and other service-related health problems. (With few exceptions, veterans are currently responsible only for health care costs incurred for reasons unrelated to their military service.) Among other issues, the proposal rasied the prospect that injured or ill veterans might find it more difficult to obtain employment in the private sector if employer-funded private insurance had to pay for their health care.

The plan was heavily criticized by many veterans and veterans’ groups, especially those who “believe that upon enlistment, the government pledged lifetime ocverage for injuries sustained on the battlefield or elsewhere.” And, as reported in the Boston Herald, it seemed to many observers that the Obama Administration had been caught completely unaware that its proposal would meet with such vehement and outspoken opposition.

“However, may said that they were suprised by the ham-handedness of the private insurance effort because it seemed that no one in the White House or the VA took into consideration how veterans would react – or Congress, where several members called the plan “dead on arrival.”

A Newsday article summed up many Americans’ feelings about the matter in opining that:
“This load-shedding device would have saved the government about $540 million. But whoever proposed it to Ovama was politically tone-deaf.

“To Obama’s credit, he appears to have backed away from this insensitive proposal. But veterans still can’t figure out how he let someone in the administration persuade him to try it. Frankly, neither can we.”

As we’ve noted, satire that hits too close to its mark is often mistaken for real news. In this case, it appears that the Obama administration took such a large misstep that it left some people wondering whether the president might really have been callous enough to offer the response attributed to him above.

    END OF QUOTES

I do know that an attempt was made to make the wounded in hospitals PAY FOR THEIR MEALS. Not sure whether it came to pass or not.

    I think he stays…he should.

I think he stays, too. I really don’t see Frank doing alot more unless someone blows him away with an offer. I can see him shopping KJ, who hit 2 homers and had 7 RBI last night in Gwinnett.

LF seems to be waking up offensively, and 2B has had a complete makeover. RF remains to be seen, but the platoon of MattyD and Church seems to have potential.

1b remains mystery to me. Did y’all know Kotch is working on a 12 game hitting streak? Yet, the power numbers are never gonna be there. With no huge power elsewhere, the deficiency at 1B glares brightly.

They”ll have to figure out what to do with 6 starters, though, around the end of August. Of course, these days you could probably pass a high salary pitcher through waivers and still trade him prio to the August 31 waiver deadline.

Unless we tank severely over the next 10 days, I think Frank stands pat. Then again… who knows. The Phils and their actions over the next 10 days also plays into it somewhat, but I’ll have more to say about that at a later time.

So he didn’t actually say that. That’s what I figured.

Verbatim…apparently not. I do recall the brouhaha from March when he proposed veterans use their own insurance. That, alone, was stupid enough…and, more importantly, insensitive. The day we want to compare volunteering for the military in the same light as volunteering for the PTA will be a sad day. But, to your point, FBG, we don’t need to credit or discredit anyone with anything less than what they are truly accountable.

Now…so everyone understands my sensitivity to this issue, not that you asked, or care (but, hey, it’s a blog so I’ll exercise my 1st Amendment rights! LOL!), I am a strong believer in fighting for one’s rights, and strongly respect the sacrifices made by our forefathers. I can’t simply view that lightly…not having visited the Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor, walked the grounds of the American Cemetery in Normandy, or watched a lifelong friend grapple with the scars of Viet Nam.

Now, my eldest son joins the Army, specifically Special Forces, on October 5th. He’s long discussed it, or the IDF (Israeli Defense Force…as Jews, he has that right…that’s why you oft-times here of Americans dying in the conflicts there), and made up his mind…despite being 20 hours from his college graduation. He said it mattered not one whit…he wasn’t marketing in the military…that would come later. As well, my recently graduated other son (U of Oregon) has eyes on the Marines Officer Candidate School. Am I proud? Yes? Scared…not yet, but will live in fear of the day a car pulls in the driveway. More proud than scared, though…as they’re living their choice.

What’s all this rambling mean? I want to know that as a nation we are squarely, unequivocally behind the women (ladies always first!) and men of our armed forces. They are the fabric of a lasting legacy of sacrifice and commitment to the ideals of this country…ideals much of the world has aspired to. Is there another nation that has given more, in blood and money, than the USA? Are there other nation’s cemeteries here…or elsewhere, on a scale such as Normandy…or Anzio…or the Pacific?

I can never, ever forget…and in good faith and conscious…I can’t let others! There will be no revisions made to the history of sacrifice made by this nation, either by its military, or by the civilian populace that has supported its endeavors. That can never be allowed.

Time to slide off the soapbox! I appreciate your indulgence…it’s therapeutic for me! LOL!

And before anyone jumps on me, I would feel that way if it was President Bush or any other past Pres. who had such “quotes” attributed to them. I’m very offended by the use of the word selfishness regarding our veterans. I have 3 uncles & a great-uncle who are/were proud Navy veterans. Another uncle by marriage had a lengthy Air Force career. The only thing that kept my dad out of Vietnam was a severe allergy to penicillin. My aunt & uncle’s nephew ( who I’ve known since his birth) just joined the Army fresh from his high school graduation. The feed thing… Most of the time you get the home team’s broadcast. So I usually get SportSouth & FSNSouth when the Braves are at home. For some reason my cable company does not show Peachtree games. I know that people in other areas with ExtraInnings get Peachtree & Hillbilly told me he gets the home & away feed for every game everyday. Don’t know what the reasoning is, particularly since TW owns Peachtree/TBS and Brighthouse cable which is what I’ve got.

Good morning ya’ll, Yep, exciting game last night. Well, for a Braves fan anyway… I watched a bit of the Phillies game after the conclusion of the Atlanta/San Francisco tilt. Those Phils are tough. Only thing the Braves can do is just win their own games and see how it plays out.

I thought I saw why Nate is not doing so well. He really flinched after one swing last night. Evidently his back is hurting. That will do it…. I don’t think Infante can get back soon enough.

Salty, I salute you in raising two outstanding young men. They certainly have my support and admiration.

Watched the Braves again last night and boy are they clicking now. Hopefully they’ll keep it up and the Phillies will eventually come down to earth so we can make a race out’a this thing. Good thing we have so many games with them in the second half. We match up well against those guys so far. Could make up some games in a hurry.

Started to post last night during the game but after many hours working on the ‘puter lately my eyes needed a break and my brain was mush. The big win was just what the doc ordered for this overworked mushbrain.

SG, with the Philthies refusing to lose anymore, I am refocusing my eyes on the Wild Card… that said, I don’t think the Phils will give up the bounty that Ricciardi will demand for Halladay. They are unfortunately too protective of their own home grown talent.

Gosh V, is it really too bad they won’t trade away the talent for him??? With Halladay(Why do I think of the Madonna song every time I see his name now?) able to have a 2.73 ERA in the AL east, I would really hate to see him on their staff.
I forget why exactly John Kruk was talking about the 1993 Phils except to point out how they were really hoping the Phils would get Randy Johnson, and when they didn’t it took some wind out of their sails. And even though they got to the W.S., they lost to the Blue Jays..and how they probably would have won it all that year, and perhaps the next with Johnson…

Raisins, thing is, this year we either beat the Phils and get a division title or we most likely lose the WC. Why? Because we have so many games with them coming up. The Braves control their own destiny this year. If the Phils beat us up, we lose ground on everything.

Second half work is cut out for the Braves, with the Fish and the Hot Pretzels. Do or die. Second place in the division probably won’t earn a WC. Possible but not likely.

Phillies will fall to earth soon… watch.

Yes, it’s tough getting out of the big hole the Braves put themselves into but there are lots of games yet to be played. Can’t worry about the Phils now, can only worry about the Braves. If they keep winning at their current pace (is that possible) they will be playing in October.

Speaking of backs, getting Infante back won’t hurt. There is no doubt in my mind that if we had a big bopper in the 5 spot we would win the division and go deep in the playoffs. Maybe all the way.

Had the game on while working. It almost put me to sleep until the late innings when the wheels came off the Braves. Hard to sleep (or work) while watching them make that ugly mess all over the field. Need a pooper-scooper after that game.

Maybe my imagination, but I think Kelly threw the whole game off today. Not his fault and he didn’t do anything wrong, but I dunno… maybe he just throws the team’s ph off. That’s it… ph. A chemistry thing.

Prado seemed, I dunno… out of sorts or off balance or something. Maybe the team bonded while winning so many together lately… guys like Prado, Yunel, Conrad, Mac, Diaz and others. Now Brooks is gone and Kelly is back. I know, had to bring him up and all that jazz, but man… the team was just way off today.

Then we have Kotch lollygagging after a grounder again at first then tossing an arch that would rival McDonald’s golden arches over to first, too late to get the runner out. An easy play played too easy. Does he daydream on occasion over there? His record of error-free ball should not overlook all those missed plays (and there are quite a few)where he shuffled and missed getting an out. Not a technical error but should have been an out. That’s where the stat sheets lie even more than the ‘official scorer’. Just home cookin’ I s’poze. Looks like runny grits to me.

Where was I? Oh, I agree with you guys about Chipper. He’s off his game and needs to sit. HOF and old Brave or not, he’s gotta take the pine on occasion for the good of the team and for his own good. Of course it wouldn’t even cross Bobby’s mind to do that.

Not taking anything away from Zito, who threw a very good game. Still, it seemed our guys kinda mailed it in today. At least that’s how it looked from my managers seat over here. 🙄

I still think the Braves need a thumper. Only one real one on the market – Adam Dunn. He’s under contract through next season at $12MM per, and is stiffer than GA. Wow… McLouth would have to cover ALOT of ground…

That said, his bat at 4 behind Chipper would transform the lineup. Think about it…

    1. N8
    2. Marteeen
    3. Chipper
    4. Dunn
    5. Mac
    6. GAnderson
    7. Kotch
    8. Diaz/Church
    9. pitcher

    Pretty decent lineup right there…

Bats right handed. Hit’s better against lefties. Hit .321 against them in 2007. Joe Crede came back from back surgery in 2008, so He only had 32 AB’s in 2008 .after a fine rookie year, 23 HR’s 67 RBI’s in 373 AB’s.

Then the guy with, you know, the most homers, and RBI’s a bit of a bopper in other words, gets a chance to come up with runners on, instead of 2 outs and no one on, later in the game. Or having to bunt a runner over.

VOR…thought about Norton, too. But…he’s a switch-hitter (when he makes contact 😯 ) I like Kotsay…his defense is at least on par with his hitting…more than can be said for any of the pine dwellars on the team (if Infante was healthy).

Nate…accentuate the positive. The team has played well while he’s been off his game. He’s still playing defense…has speed…and isn’t striking out with regularity…still gets on base. He’ll be fine…and he works the pitcher. You find me a team with all eight regulars nailing it concurrently and I’ll know you’re spending too much time playing EA Sports…cause that’s the only time ‘it’s in the game’!

If I’ve told this story before, I apologize. But with his tremendous catch to preserve Mark Buehrle’s perfect game on Thursday afternoon, Dewayne Wise produced the reminder of the first day that I saw him during Spring Training in 2004.

As we were standing in the middle of the clubhouse just shooting the breeze with Cox, Wise, a non-roster invitee who had previously been in the Blue Jays system, approached his new manager to introduce himself.

And staying true to his ability to make all of his players feel like they’re wanted and important, Cox responded with a firm handshake, a smile and, “Hey I’ve heard a lot about you, it’s great to have you here.”

Then as Wise walked away, Cox asked, “Who was that?”

The addition of left fielder Matt Holliday all but ensures that the Cardinals will attempt to trade Troy Glaus, who is on a rehabilitation assignment while recovering from surgery on his right shoulder.

The Giants, Braves, Rangers and Tigers are among the clubs expected to scout Glaus at Class AA Springfield this weekend, according to a major-league source.

Glaus, a third baseman who recently has played some left field on this assignment, no longer has a position with the Cardinals with Holliday in left, Mark DeRosa at third and Albert Pujols at first.

He hit 38 bombs for Toronto in ’06, 20 in only 115 games in ’07, and 27 last season in St. Louis. He bats right and has a career SLG of .498

He has about a week left on his rehab time – coincidentally right about trade deadline time.

Took 2 zinc tablets and took a nap, woke up not feeling sick! 😀 Don’t know what exactly that has to do with the swine flu, but I like to talk about myself!

    Classic Cox story V!

I don’t know who they are scouting, except like what you said about Konerko (SP?) but the White Sox didn’t hit much in a double header today… so I can’t see them giving up Dye or Konerko…I’d take my chances with Thome at 1st for his bat! 🙂

SG, I just feel Nate is wasted a bit in leadoff. After leading off the game, he’s going to come up too often after the 8th hitter and the pitcher making outs…so no one on for him to drive in. In the AL with the DH, sure you are just leading off once and then real hitters are on in front of you.

I just think of all the wasted opportunities with Frenchy and G.A., guys with little power, batting with runners on.
Time will tell. And who knows if Prado would do well leading off???
But, if we aren’t going to make a move, for financial reasons, or not wanting to give up great prospects…I think the braves should consider it. I expect Bobby to call first thing to run over some other ideas I have as well! 🙄

A hot one on the coast today. Random catch up on comments stuff:

Raisins, Glaus scares me a bit. On paper he looks like a bopper, but I just went and looked at his numbers. Seems he had a huge power surge in 2000 after not doing much and then fell off the surge dramatically in 2007. Now, I’m not sayin’ because of that or because of his shoulder needing work is because he was on the juice… but I am just sayin’, well, his timing and circumstances caught my attention. Maybe that’s what the Cards know. Maybe not, but why would they replace him with Dero? Who’s gonna pickup that big salary? All I’m sayin’ is I don’t like something here… don’t dislike him, but sumpin’ smells.

Then as Wise walked away, Cox asked, “Who was that?”

That is funny, but also sad in and aggravating. I want a manager that has his wits about him and doesn’t need to resort to false praise to cover up his own lack of… whatever… and a manager that is comfortable in knowing that it’s – OK not to know or remember a particular player – kinda’ way.

I just feel Nate is wasted a bit in leadoff. After leading off the game, he’s going to come up too often after the 8th hitter and the pitcher making outs…so no one on for him to drive in.

I hear ya, Bear. Although, he’s doing great there. He and Maaarteeen supposed to get on base for Chipper and Mac to drive in. Thing is, if we just had a bopmeister, we wouldn’t need to require him to be a long-ball hitter… just get on base and after the first inning, drive in whoever is there or get on base for Prado, Chipper and Mac. Like that. But I know what you’re saying and it does cross my mind occasionally. Just don’t want to mess up the front-end chemistry (and success) that we have right now. Anyway, I just talked to Bobby and told him to leave Nate in leadoff and he agreed. Then again, you never know with Bobby… right after he agreed to leave Nate there in the leadoff spot as I turned to walk away, he looked at Chino, scratched his head and asked, “who’s Nate”? 😆

Gil, isn’t Ibanez a bit too old and injury prone to want for anything more than a few months rental?

Back to silver. Acosta pitched well. It was a seeing eye single that scored two. Nothing can be done about that. Lady luck and such.

Hard to get silver from O’Flaherty’s outing. Maybe nickel… or coal. Walked the bases loaded is not what any MLB pitcher should do. Cox was visibly po’ed on the monund when he pulled him.

Maybe the silver is that even the three walks and two resulting runs didn’t make the difference in the game. No runs will not win games, ever.

And Salty, testify brother! I think it is best for players to not be rushed up from the minors, most of the time. But some players are ready sooner. Andruw Jones was just 19 when he came up. Justin Upton was 19 when he came up(and only hit .224 for part of that year)Aranus Ramirez was 19 Edgar Renteria was supposedly 19.

I heard Joe Simpson say during the game last night that he heard some scout that has seen both Heyward and Freeman play, say that they might be the best players out there for the braves…. this year! 😯

SG, can’t you just “hear” DOB say to a September callup…the braves would have to then make room for him on the Major league roster, he will play in the Arizona league in the winter, blah, blah, blah….

G.A., unless he hits 20 HR’s and drives in 50 RBI’s the last 2 months is gone after this year. I just fear another palooka being signed next year to play in left and bringing Heyward up say in July, after the braves are once basically out of the race.

40 Man roster is what my fingers should have typed….
Braves are 6 1/2 games out right now. The Mariners are 7 1/2 out and Buster Olney said as they fade out of the west, they will likely be sellers now.
Just checked, they are 6 1/2 out in the wildcard race…we are 3 1/2 out.

After hitting a 3 run homer yesterday, Frenchy is hitting .333 in 45 ABs for the Mutts, with 12 RBI’s in 11 games.
Amazing what getting away from TP can do for a feller! 😉

Bear, what I had in mind was to bring Heyward up for a few days when someone is either DL’d or expendable in September. And obviously not to take someone that’s hitting out to move him in. Then, if we’re out of it in September, mox nix… may as well let Heyward get a taste of the bigs.

Oh, and I couldn’t care less what any little wise-acre beat reporter thinks about that, or anything else for that matter.

    Heyward…NOW…PERIOD! Freeman, too…fine by me.

Enough with this ‘get your feet wet’. I’m over professional clubhouse. It’s a game, but they’re paid bloody well to do just that…play. Instead, someone needs rest, another has a cold…or upset tummy. But one who has the flu for a week can pitch…another with a hangnail needs to be DL’d. How many of you ‘need a rest’ at your job? More to the point…how many ‘get a rest’ at your job? Mine’s always been called vacation.

Up and coming special players need to know sooner than later how their talent rates against the ‘big boys’. (I’m big on ” today! 😆 ). Why wait a year to learn what today can tell you?
