My turn again???? Seems like I just wrote one of these…..6 months ago!!! 🙂
Well, it’s getting old saying next year will be a better year in braves land. What’s funny, and great about this game, is you just never know who’s going to win, their division, the wildcard, or the World Series. Well, we know the WS winner will come out of the AL, but other than that, it’s a semi educated guess. Can anyone remember who was picked to be winners this spring??? Detroit was going to be about the best team in baseball, certainly the best offense in decades. And the Indians were supposed to have 7-8 ML ready starters. So, one of those two teams was surely going to win the AL central, with the other team winning the Wildcard. That’s what the experts, people who live and breathe baseball, have watched the game closely for many moons said.
And we all know the only team that might, just might top the Red Sox in the east was the Yankees. The Rays were at least another year away from competing.
Mariners were likely to win the AL west. Well, they may win the worst record in the west this year, that’s about all…
In the NL west, how many people projected the Giants to be in 3rd place, with 2007 NL pennant winner Colorado in 4th, and the Padres in last place???
I believe the Cubs were projected to win the central, but who expected the Cardinals in be in the hunt for most of the year? A team most people saw and predicted, after Spring training, as the worst in their division???
In our own division, who among the experts, or among us, could see the Marlins competing through August????
Which brings us to the Braves. We know most(but not all) the experts predicted us to be a 3rd place team. But, the beat writer and most of us could see this team seriously competing for the flag in ’08.
We started the year with an embarrassment of pitching it seemed. Tons of hard throwers in the bullpen, with Gonzo coming back in a few months. Seemed like we had 6-7 serious contenders for 5 starting jobs. Frenchy really to move from an excellent right fielder, to one of the best in the game. Diaz finally getting the chance to play every day. Yunel ready to have break out year, in his first year as a starter. Chipper was back, we had one of the best hitting and fielding 1st baseman for the WHOLE year, Kelly Johnson and McCann just reaching their prime years as well. With Infante, we finally had someone who was a true super sub, no need to cringe if KJ or Chipper had the day off, or even if they went on the DL.
Well, best laid plans and all that. You all know the rest by heart. You just can’t predict injuries. Well, we knew Chipper would miss a few weeks, but that’s about it. Glavine had never gone on the DL. Smoltz would be Smoltz, Hampton would be back soon…losing the closer, and the 8th inning guy??? Hard to win doing that. Yet, our bullpen really wasn’t a big problem for the first 4 months of the season. But, we still didn’t seem to really be in a race.
I know I have been just a tidge negative about Bobby, and about our chances for next year. But, like I mentioned above, you never know! The Mets may get better, but if they go into next year without a closer, they will still be easy to reel in. The Phils are likely to lose their 2nd biggest bopper. That can’t help. Marlins will have to get rid of anyone making more than 6 figures.
So, IF we can sign a solid starter or two, IF we can sign a power hitting right handed bat, IF Frenchy reverts to the 2006-07 model, IF Chipper can play in 140 + games, IF Soriano can pitch like he did last year, IF Moylan is back to his great self(and he should be) We could, we should be the team to beat!!!!
You heard it here first!!! You’ll see, just wait till next year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Berigan, good lead. It’s apparent that you are a dyed in the wool Braves fan. You’re right about never really knowing how the chips will fall. Our got cashed in early this year but we got a dime on the dollar value. Such is life in the Bigs.

I’m seriously and sincerely envious of how well you tied it together … but we must agree to disagree on a couple of points … first, I’m not sure we know the WS winner will come out of the AL, but if it does, I would like it to be Tampa Bay.
Second, the notion that we “just can’t predict injuries” … those which our players incurred were far more predictible than one might imagine … but those responsible for strategy and risk management would have us otherwise believe.
I like too, your choice of words, especially “semi educated guess” … being semieducated, I can relate.

The WS out of the AL was a bit tongue in cheek, but it sure feels like that most years….I can agree that Smoltz was due with all the shoulder woes of late…but I thought Maddux would have elbow issues before Glavine. Glavine just doesn’t bend his elbow much, no snap like Maddux has….We should have traded for Jamie Moyer instead of the Phils in 2006. He’s made more starts than any brave starter since then….Glavine just wasn’t old enough to take a chance on! 😉
All kidding aside, the team and their minor league affiliates need to do a better job of conditioning. I saw a photo of Morton on the AJC, and he looked so….puny. So thin…Moylan talked about how he’s really gotten in great shape, since he didn’t have anything else to do while rehabbing the arm…
Why wasn’t he in great shape in 2007??? Not saying his ligaments still wouldn’t have shredded, but I don’t think Nolan Ryan ever had elbow surgery, and I recall a fellow pitcher saying he hadn’t thrown more pitches than anyone else in the game, he’d thrown twice as many!!!!

Raisins, your “propped up poodle” idea is spot on. Thing is, even a poodle can be trained to sit, stay, roll over, speak and hush. Many actors and singers can’t do anything but beg for attention. Wish they’d just stop yapping, shut up and do their little tricks for us.
There’s a lot of peer pressure over there at the Hollywood Kennels. If a member of the entertainment community doesn’t go along with the party line and spout the prescribed talking points at least once during a campaign they fall from the A-list. If they dare voice support for conservative values they are blacklisted.
On the other hand, if they criticize conservatives they are welcomed into the fold. If they spew liberal venom and personally attack the opposition they are given special doggie treats and welcomed into the inner circle.
It’s an odd and disturbing turnaround of the ‘Blacklisting’ of members and sympathizers of the liberal, Communist Party in the late 40’s and early 50’s. Now, entertainers are blacklisting themselves if they don’t publicly support liberal, progressive, socialist, communist values and campaign for political candidates that represent that platform and those values.
The House Committee on Un-American Activities went too far. What began as a national security idea became a witch-hunt. Now the elite network media, Hollywood and many in the entertainment industry have gone too far the other way. Many useful idiots doing the bidding of their liberal masters.
So the actors are faced with a decision that will reveal their character and dictate their career path to the world and the ‘Elite Ruling Class’. Play along, join the club, ridicule conservative values, support the Libs and be handed all the great scripts and movie roles and get filthy rich… or be a conservative and be ignored or blacklisted from the film industry.

It is amazing to me that so many buy into the empty promises that the Teleprompter King spews out. He is doing nothing more than promising false hopes for the seemingly hopeless; painting the illusion that those who are “poor” will be brought up to the levels they are somehow entitled to. What is really amazing is that it is the same vote buying strategy that the Dems have been using for years, yet the “poor” who buy into it remain “poor.” Many of the dumb masses are like spoiled children. They will naturally gravitate toward the parent who buys them more toys.

Good morning folks, beautiful day here where the South begins… I finished mowing the lawn today after suffering a delay for needing to repair the mower deck on the John Deere. At least it still starts but well, you know…
I have been mulling around an idea for a blog lead… So many timely topics to pick from.
The moving vans showed up at the Diamond yesterday to pack up the Braves’ office goods and other assorted equipment and I am sure it is well on its way to Georgia by now.
No hard feelings left on my part.. I am moving on to a new affiliation whenever that occurs.
I am going to be good today and not espouse any political vitriol as I would be preaching to the choir anyway. However… YOU KNOW!!!!

The Pirates face what some might see as a challenging decision involving first baseman Adam LaRoche this offseason … If they tender him a contract through arbitration, his salary is sure to jump up from its current $5 million. From there, if they end up paying, say, $7 million, they have no guarantee that they will receive any value on that investment until, oh, May or June. On the other hand, if they trade LaRoche, they run the risk of seeing him finally put together two good halves elsewhere. Or not. “Zero chance of that,” LaRoche said. “I will never change. I will hit like this for the rest of my life, and I’ll never be able to tell you why.” He burst out laughing immediately after saying that, a clear sign that his sense of humor again survived another maddening season in which he batted below the Mendoza Line through May 17 but is now up to .269 with 20 home runs and 75 RBIs. Isolating just on the 50 games since the start of July, his average is .328 with 12 home runs, 16 doubles and 41 RBIs. Management does not discuss contract matters, but the Pirates are known to be amenable to broaching an amicable settlement with LaRoche in advance of arbitration, as with all eligible players. If not, they almost surely will tender him an arbitration contract. LaRoche’s take? “Maybe they can give me a three-year contract that’s payable over six years.” — Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
So LaRoche can start slow every year, and it’s a factor in his contract status. Tex does it, and he gets a pass. Why?

Tazawa’s intent is to take the best offer he can get from a team in the major leagues, a move that could fracture decades of goodwill between the professional leagues of Japan and the United States.
Major League Baseball has long had an informal agreement with Nippon Professional Baseball regarding amateur players. In essence, MLB teams have agreed not to sign Japanese prospects. The only process to acquire Japanese players has been via free agency (granted after nine seasons in the NPL) or through the posting system.
That guarantees Japanese teams either the services of their best players or compensation for losing them. Without such a system, the future of the Japanese leagues would be endangered.
As Americans, we have the right to take the best players from other countries! 😀

Your Infantry Unit is outnumbered 8 – 1, and the enemy fire is so intense, from 100 or 200 yards away, that your own Infantry Commander has ordered the Medi-Vac helicopters to stop coming in.
You’re lying there, listening to the enemy machine guns, and you know you’re not getting out. Your family is 1/2 way around the world, 12,000 miles away, and you’ll never see them again. As the world starts to fade in and out, you know this is the day.
Then, over the machine gun noise, you faintly hear that sound of a helicopter, and you look up to see a Huey, but it doesn’t seem real,
because there are no Medi-Vac markings are on it.
Ed Freeman is coming for you. He’s not Medi-Vac, so it’s not his job, but he’s flying his Huey down into the machine gun fire, after the Medi-Vacs were ordered not to come. He’s coming anyway.
And he drops it in, and sits there in the machine gun fire, as they load 2 or 3 of you on board. Then he flies you up and out through the gunfire, to the Doctors and Nurses.
And, he kept coming back…… 13 more times….. and took about 30 of you and your buddies out, who would never have gotten out.

When the national anthem is being sung, various participants are shown mugging for the camera. When the camera gets to Howard, he says: ” ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ is going on. CL…’course not…no one is. You all stated your view, comedic-style, and I responded with my perception…nothing more.
The article on T.Boone is as mis-guided as he accuses T.Boone of being. Does anyone think a 3.5% reduction in 35 years is progress? What it means is we’ve shipped dollars by the boatload overseas while ignoring our own backyards. When it was cheap, perhaps not a bad policy, but now…not so good. Any policy lacking vision of its consequences will rise up and bite. Frankly, I’ll fault industry as much as gov’t on this one, as industry benefited enormously from the instability that exists in most parts of the world from which we import.
Of course, no one gave one whit about the oil industry prior to five years ago…many companies spent years just trying to survive, and the economies of those regions suffered accordingly. The Texas economy has taken its hits the past 25 years…and now is taking it again.
I’m rambling…my points have holes, but on the whole, I’m satisfied…for the moment! 😛

Greetings all…. Looks like hindsight is 20-20… Folks, I have long said I could not understand investors’ love of dot com stocks when all they really had was and idea and a room full of rented computers. One blip and the whole thing collapses. Then there are the bandits who were playing fast and loose with company money and the risky pyramid schemes and now see the whole house of cards fall in a heap, taking the good along with the bad to the abyss of bankruptcy.
Lessons we learned from our parents to live within your means, not try to keep up with the Jones, and that tried and true “A fool and his money are soon parted”…
I’m not the sharpest knife in the drawer but I have always tried to make sure my out-go did not exceed my income. If I died tomorrow, no one would have to worry about paying off my debts nor would they be put out of our home.
So…. baseball…. They are still playing???

Fannie, Freddie: call it like it is…gov’t had its chance, but blew it, courtesy of the same party that would give you a $1K tax credit than work towards creating you a job. Essentially, here’s your fish, don’t worry about learning how….we’ll get you another one later!
AIG: for once, this might be a homerun. Sum of the parts greater than the whole…and actually done in a way that is incentive to aggressively sell those parts via $8 billion/year in interest. The only way to avoid the interest is to reduce the principal. Think this way: if gov’t can own real estate, why not a piece of capital America? AIG has a cancer that needs disposal, but don’t toss the body just yet…give the chemo a chance.

I think trading Francoeur would be a huge mistake. That’s a “day-trading” (to incorporate a financial talk reference) move. Everything on Jeff’s baseball resume says he will be a very good if not great baseball player. He had a bad season. Now suddenly he has lost the ability to play the same game he has played all of his life? History has shown that players all over MLB can have a bad season and rebound back to their former selves. I won’t bother specifying examples (perhaps Tim Dierkes can do that for us, too). I will say again what I have said for weeks. Sign 2 pitchers in FA, Lowe is #1 on my list, Wolf/Burnett/Looper are next. Gives you a rotation of Lowe, other FA, JJ, Campillo, one from a group that includes Morton, Parr, Reyes and our injured vets. Smoltz will almost certainly be back. I think Hampton should be resigned to a contract smart for both sides. Then, go after Dunn for LF, with Juan Rivera as #2 option, Raul Ibanez as #3. I love our current bench of Norton, Infante and Prado. Other option is to sign only 1 FA pitcher, trade KJ for another, and sign a 2B in FA like Orlando Hudson. All of these options make for a competitive team for 2009. The wild-card in all of this, as we learned this year, is the injury bug. I will give you my dream 25 in a minute…

NEW YORK (AP) — Trial has begun for a baseball player-turned-actor accused of brutally killing a cat in a jealous rage after complaining that his ex-girlfriend cared more for the furry feline than she did for him.
Norman the cat died of massive internal injuries and suffered broken ribs and teeth.
Assistant District Attorney Leila Kermani said the cat named Norman died with broken teeth, broken ribs, a broken leg, a torn tongue, massive internal injuries including bruised lungs and a bruised liver and a chest cavity filled with blood.
“The defendant, in a fit of anger and rage, beat a defenseless animal to death,” Kermani told the jury in her opening remarks Wednesday. “The defendant killed Norman simply because he was an angry, jealous and drunken bully.”
Former New York Mets minor leaguer Joseph Petcka, 37, is on trial on charges of aggravated cruelty to animals for killing Norman on March 27, 2007, after a night of heavy drinking. He faces up to two years in prison if convicted.

PERHAPS the most insidious byproduct of the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, has been a reflexive sanctification of the military. To put this in bumper stickerese: Support the Troops.
Well, I have an ugly confession to make: I don’t support the troops – at least not unconditionally. When somebody tells me they serve in the military, my first impulse isn’t to say, “Thank you for your service!” like those insufferable chickenhawks on talk radio.
My first impulse is to say, “I’m sorry to hear that.” Because I am. I’m sorry to know that the person I’m talking to might someday be maimed or killed on the job, or might someday kill someone else. Or refuel a plane that drops bombs on buildings.
I can’t see how anyone who calls himself or herself Christian – or human, for that matter – wouldn’t be sorry.
The fact that we have an army, that we need an army, is inherently tragic. It’s an admission that our species is still ruled by fear and aggression.

Well, it’s been a record setting year for the Bravos this year. Consecutive one run road losses. More injuries than ever (right? Must’a been). Then, being swept in a season series, which is a first in almost 100 years.
Maybe Chipper, with his NL batting title, will set one record on the other side of the ledger. Maybe Jair gets a ROY. What others? There must be more signifigant moments this year but I’m too tired to ‘member’em.
Then, we have to appreciate… the Braves are doing there part and playing good enough at the end of this season and playing bad enough at the end of this season to put and keep the Mutts in second place. That is worthy of a spoiler role. Hopefully we’ll win the rest of our games and end the year on a high.
For the time being, beating Mutts and losing to Phils is just fine and dandy.

Well, it’s an incredible Friday topping off a bizarre week.
Nationalization and intervention of corporations has never been positive. This is the wildest market I have ever seen. The Fed has been asleep at the wheel. So many violations of the fundamentals of a free market will have consequences. Will the government nationalize oil companies next, just like the inept Rep. Maxine Waters threatened to do so inarticulately while grilling oil execs in the recent House hearings?
Notice this morning… the very banks and brokerage firms that got us into this economic mess are the very ones that are being helped (propped up) from this historic level of government intervention and market manipulation. Many strange things going on behind closed doors on Wall Street and in Washington.
Nationalization and socialism go hand in hand. Hope we elect a President that is not inclined to continue bailing out greedy corporations and eliminate the middle class altogether. The Ruling Class and the poor. Sound familiar?
These are dangerous times.

American business is built on the free enterprise system. We succeed or fail based on our actions. It’s not nice to mess with mother nature and it’s really dangerous for a government to tinker with private corporations.

Remember when banks were accused of “redlining” and “discriminating” on home loans? The gov’t basically told lenders they had to find a way to provide home loans to everyone, or fall under federal scrutiny for Civil Rights violations. Everyone “has a right” to the American Dream, right? So what happened? The banks saw an opening for userous interest rates and began opening up loan programs for everyone. It didn’t matter if the applicant was qualified or not. All they did was alter the playing field. The less the ability to repay, the harder the terms for repayment. Makes sense, right? And if the borrowers had no down payment, No problem… just loan the money for that, too. FHA requires 10% for guarantees? No problem… just borrow 90% on a FHA backed loan, and take a 2nd for the remaining 10%. Can’t handle the payment? No problem… we’ll give you a low payment for a few years and you can figure out what to do later about the huge increase to come. Can’t make the payments? No problem… you have absolutely nothing invested, so you have nothing to lose. Just walk away…
So the ingredients were there for the perfect storm. Government forcing “diversity” in lending coupled with greedy lenders loaning money to unqualified and incapable borrowers. The result is… The Mortage Crisis.
So lenders have now predictably over-reacted, and the money sources for lending have dried up. All of the lending institutions become cash poor, go belly up or get bought out for pennies on the dollar. Government intervenes (sounds familiar, doesn’t it?) and the cycle starts again.
Is that the American Dream everyone has a right to?
I’ll tell you what everyone has a right to. They have the right to the pursuit of happiness. Some people simply can’t catch it. But why should they? Their nanny government will catch it for them. And in the end, we the people pay for it all.
I have nothing against charity, but charity under duress is simply redistribution of wealth. It’s giving at the point of a gun. It’s nothing more than sanctioned robbery.
I suppose I should look at the bright side… I’m taxed to the point that I have nothing to invest anyway. So my money is safe. The banks guarantee $22.45, right?

They just protected some banks from short selling and left others out to dry. They already had a law about not shorting stocks unless they owned them but never regulated. On and on…

McCain’s fellow prisoner in Hanoi spoke here yesterday:
Before two presidential bids and 22 years in the U.S. Senate, John McCain was simply a fellow prisoner to Col. Quincy Collins, his cell mate in Hanoi at the height of the Vietnam War.
During their time in the same prison, the two organized patriotic events and church services to boost troop morale, their songs written on toilet paper using fish bones and diarrhea pills.
“John had a tin ear, but he taught me some songs,” Collins said.
Now retired from the Air Force, Collins appeared at Riverfront Park in Wilmington on Thursday as part of a non-partisan Citizenship Week event followed by a reception at The Reel Café organized by Will Breazeale, Republican candidate for the 7th District U.S. House of Representatives seat.
Collins has been active in campaigning for McCain, serving as co-chairman of Veterans for McCain and making multiple appearances across the state for the Republican nominee for president. Thursday’s event, however, had a different focus. Collins read the Preamble to the Constitution, calling it the most important and influential document besides the Bible.
“These are 52 words that have affected every life in this nation,” Collins said.
From a podium made from an enlarged replica of the Constitution, Collins spoke of his reverence for the document, and how that was strengthened by his time in the prison camp with McCain. He called it the greatest growth period of his 77 years.
“In prison, we had a motto – unity before self,” Collins said. “We had God as our co-pilot, but we needed teamwork to survive.”
Raised in Concord, N.C., and a graduate of the Military College of South Carolina, Collins is a retired Air Force pilot currently living in Charlotte. His awards include two Purple Hearts, two Silver Stars, a Legion of Merit, a Distinguished Service medal and a POW medal. He was shot down Sept. 2, 1965, and McCain became his cell mate in 1970.
In the prison, McCain was their “Sunday matinee,” Collins said, a gifted storyteller who would relate whole scenes with a keen memory for characters and story lines. He recalls McCain as a “hyperactive” and fiercely patriotic soldier, and a man shaped by his time in prison.
“He’s a guy who tells it like it is, and doesn’t care if there’s objection,” Collins said.
At the end of Thursday’s ceremony, 15 former and current military members and elected officials stood with Collins to renew their oath to the Constitution. Collins charged the audience to remember their past, appreciate their current freedom and plan for the future.
“To be born in freedom is an accident, to live in freedom is a struggle, but to die in freedom is an obligation,” Collins said.

“Norman came and lunged at me, throwing me on my butt by the coffee table,” Petcka told jurors, testifying on his own behalf against felony animal-cruelty charges that could put him in prison as long as two years.
“I went down with my hands down towards Norman, and Norman reared around and bit into my hand, into my thumb area.
“I was screaming, ‘Uhhh! Norman! Get off of me! Uhhh!'”
Petcka, 37, a 6-foot-2, 210-pound former Mets minor league pitcher, told jurors he was twice forced to defend himself from Norman’s fangs. The first time, he said, he “swiped” the ferocious feline away with his pitching arm. The second time, he kicked Norman “hard” with his motorcycle boots.
Recalling the condition of the cat’s body, this jerk is a liar and guilty as sin.

Barack Obama, who lamented Friday that “we have not managed our federal budget with any kind of discipline,” is nonetheless promising to spend $50 billion on a United Nations anti-poverty program that critics say will drive up American debt.
“The short-term weakness in the capital market is a reflection of long-term problems that we have in our economy,” Obama told reporters in Florida. “We have been loading up enormous amounts of debt.”

Hi folks, Josie and I took the day off and went to a local fair which is a primarily devoted to restored steam engines and other nostalgic items. Pig races, lawn mower races, tractor pulls… Well you get the idea… Great fun.
And debt… Well, I did look into buying a saw mill… 🙂 All those pine logs I have been piling up may come to some use…

Just got home (ahhhhhh), wife in shower, turned on TV, found the game, got online and heard a familiar voice but there was something different in the voice… it was young. I looked behind me (to the TV) and there he, uh, wasn’t… Tony Gwynn. The Tyler’s House of Payne kid (name?) sounds just like a young Gwynn. Nice kid (I’ll forgive him for being a Mets fan).

That is… keep Chipper on a year to year contract if possible. He deserves that chance to finish with the Braves and with his probable injuries and short season potential, one year wouldn’t lock us in long enough to hurt. Would Chipper agree to that? Dunno, but I would hope so.

What never ceases to amaze me is whenever someone mentions taxing the rich and giving to the poor, I somehow find myself among the former rather than the latter much to my dismay. It is incredible how little someone can make and still be counted as wealthy…
Now I know that given this bailout thing coming up is going to mean everyone is going to have to pay higher taxes and receive less. I fear that if the democrats win this fall, our military will be toast and our judicial system will be so skewed to the left that Lenin and Stalin will appear to be moderates…
And baseball…. yikes… suddenly the ball has become radioactive… The season cannot end soon enough for the Braves I don’t think.

Berigan… They had lots of different displays. A fellow had 2 ’57 Fords there which were absolutely cherry. One a Sunliner conv’ and a station wagon. I had a ’55 ragtop as well as a ’62. My dad owned a ’57 Ford that was a 2 dr HT that was very similar to the one I saw today. Lots of great memories came back for me when I looked at those cars.

There are positions of McCain’s that I don’t like – illegal immigration being #1. But considering the horrifying alternative…..
Speaking of illegal immigration – the jobless rate is rapidly increasing. Who has those jobs now? I go by construction sites and see Latinos. Everywhere I look I see lawn maintenance workers – all Latinos. I’m now seeing companies with Latino names – Alvarez and Martinez Home Repairs or (for true!) Latino Taxis. More and more store fronts popping up with signs in Spanish. Where did they get the money to do this with?? When you pay no taxes, have free medical care, subsidized housing, etc etc etc, it probably wouldn’t take too long. Being a natural-born American citizen, I wouldn’t know about that. I resent my country being used as an ATM by a bunch of law breakers. And Pelosi’s Democrat-controlled Congress is passing a bill that will dramatically INCREASE the number of legal immigrants into the US, with annual increases. Just what we need. More people for fewer jobs. More immigrants on the dole.
Did I leave anybody out? Surely there’s somebody I haven’t taken to task! 😆

For all her faults, one thing my mother could do was grow things. It did not seem to make any difference the season or conditions, she would plant or re-pot or whatever and it would grow. That used to drive my sister in law crazy as she was the “expert” on everything green…. Mom had two basic tenets,
1. If you don’t plant it, it will not grow.
2. You can tame just about anything if you feed it long enough.

Howdy folks, busy day for me… Went to visit mom at the nursing home today. Finally, she had a smile instead of a frown. It has been tough but I think she has adjusted to the environment and the staff has adjusted to her…
Great golf matches today too. And now time to watch the Braves try to spoil the Mets’ party. Too bad about Chipper but then it is not like it is going to be a big difference in the outcome of the game.

Francoeur to the Royals?

Pure speculation here, but the Jeff Francoeur-to-the-Royals rumors continue. Joe Posnanski had a throwaway line in this post about “Jeff Francoeur, who I predict will be a Royal soon.” An eagle-eyed reader emailed Atlanta writer David O’Brien to ask if this was supposed to be a joke. O’Brien responded:
“…that’s not tongue-in-cheek by Posnanski. As we’ve mentioned a few times, KC is the one team I wouldn’t be surprised to see Francoeur traded to, simply because of Dayton Moore and his long association with Francoeur. They remain friends who stay in contact, from my understanding. But more importantly, Dayton was here when the Braves drafted and developed Francoeur, and he’s going to have a lot better memory/impression of the player than other teams/GMs who’d just Francoeur on his performance slide and or what they’ve heard from scouts or through the grapevine…”
Another potential factor favoring Francoeur in KC: though the right fielder has never managed to walk a lot in the big leagues (.312 OBP), the Royals don’t seem to value walks at all, anyway.
Francoeur has gone from hometown favorite to disappointment in Atlanta—though to be fair to Frenchy, expectations could not have been higher. Perhaps he’s just another one of those top prospects who never pan out. But maybe the 24-year old would flourish away from an atmosphere that’s become toxic.
Atlanta obviously has a long shopping list of things they’d like. So any ideas on what the Royals might be willing to part with?

Speaking of bugs, there is a very ugly, mean, nasty, racist little bug over at the ajc. Cynthia Tucker has to be one of the angriest, most hating columnists in the country. Her personal attacks against all things conservative and her communist rants are what I’d expect from a fascist in Venezuela or Cuba, but to be given a columnist forum in an American newspaper is a not only a waste of ink and paper, it’s a virus that explains why the ajc is losing their readership.

This is shaping up to be an important game today. Hope Bobby puts the best on the field to drive another nail in the Mutts season. Too bad Chipper isn’t going to get a last crack at the Mutts. May be his last chance to do that as a Brave.
Wouldn’t a shot of cortisone into the shoulder get him back on the field? Then he could rest 3 or 4 games after that.

Making credit a bit tighter would be a good thing for lots of folks. Perhaps with the bailout plan the government should just nationalize all the banks and forgive everyone’s debt and we can all start over with a clean slate…. Woo-hoo!!! Would that stimulate the economy or what??? Everyone would be rushing out to buy big screen TVs and new cars because they would have so much excess cash…. Yes, I know it doesn’t make any sense but neither does much of anything else proposed so far….

Want to control spending, cleanse the country of an unfair tax system and help the economy? Shut down the IRS, begin the ‘Fair Tax’ and let the chips fall where they may with all the lawyers and CPA’s that have been translating Greek for a living with tax/estate planning law and income tax forms. By “paying as we go”, those that spend the most will pay the most and those that don’t spend much aren’t taxed much. That, and illegal immigrants will cause a windfall of revenue to America.
Then our country might even be able to afford to do something positive for us instead of spend all their time plotting ways to get deeper into our lives and our pockets. Fix a few roads, some bridges, some sewage systems and pay our brave troops a lot better.

It was the Democrat’s agenda that everybody had to have the opportunity to buy a house, whether they were employed or not, whether they could afford it or not, whether they had the credit or not. They forced the lending institutions to stop “discriminating” and extend credit to one and all. Now it’s time to pay the piper.
The IRS is a gestapo organization which many times even refuses to follow court rulings when they are in favor of the taxpayer. 99% of it SHOULD be scrapped. Won’t happen. Too much industry built around it, they say. Well, the government spokesmen say that individual Americans need to retool themselves, learn other trades, etc and go into other segments of business. Why not the tax industry??
Basically, our entire government is broken. It has become a self-serving behemoth that is crushing the people of the nation.

Yes, the Dems were responsible for turning Fannie Mae into a social experiment to extend their socialist agenda into the financial markets. As it turns out, the greed of Wall Street, the irresponsibility of the overextended citizens, the ineptitude of the spineless politicians (both the Republicans and the Democrats) and the egomaniacs like Greenspan have created a perfect storm that will devastate our country and send inflationary shock waves into the future. The problem is systemic and touches everyone from the Atlantic to the Pacific.
The socialists should be cheering the recent event (many are). Nationalized mortgage and real estate markets, nationalized insurance… health care and oil are next in their sites. The politicians like Chris Dodd, Obama (the two largest recipients of Fannie Mae campaign contributions) and Barney Frank will scream the loudest about the debacle.

To hear today’s Democrats, you’d think all this started in the last couple years. But the crisis began much earlier. The Carter-era Community Reinvestment Act forced banks to lend to uncreditworthy borrowers, mostly in minority areas.
Age-old standards of banking prudence got thrown out the window. In their place came harsh new regulations requiring banks not only to lend to uncreditworthy borrowers, but to do so on the basis of race.
These well-intended rules were supercharged in the early 1990s by President Clinton. Despite warnings from GOP members of Congress in 1992, Clinton pushed extensive changes to the rules requiring lenders to make questionable loans.
Failure to comply meant your bank might not be allowed to expand lending, add new branches or merge with other companies. Banks were given a so-called “CRA rating” that graded how diverse their lending portfolio was.
In the name of diversity, banks began making huge numbers of loans that they previously would not have. They opened branches in poor areas to lift their CRA ratings.
Meanwhile, Congress gave Fannie and Freddie the go-ahead to finance it all by buying loans from banks, then repackaging and securitizing them for resale on the open market.
That’s how the contagion began.

Good article CL. I’ve been listening to the Sunday political talk shows. Funny, in a sick way, to see Barney Frank and Chris Dodd out there adding their cover, uh, spin. If guilty, scream the loudest and talk the most to try and confuse everyone. A commonly used tactic by the left and the guilty (redundant?).
Now, baseball. Appears Mutts are getting a little help from the umpires. By the way, does anyone know how may rally-killing DP’s Kotchman has hit into? Seems like he’s done that a lot in his short time in Atlanta. He was robbing French of those opportunities for a while there.
Hate that Chipper isn’t in the game. Resting for the Phillies? My shoulder would have to hurt very bad to stay out of this game. Maybe it does… who knows. But there’s no reason to rest it and play the next series. Unless it hurts bad. Who knows. Parr is pitching like a AAA guy. He is a triple-A guy, so that’s fine for him, no so good for this crucial game. Playing Mutts spoiler is crucial. Right?

That was edge of seat stuff there. French did good with his 3’fer 4. Even got Chipper in the game to pinch hit and contributed greatly but didn’t even have to swing the bat. Prado made them pay for the walk. Good thing too, turns out we needed all of those runs.

2. NASCAR race at Dover… My guy Denny went out early but Josie’s driver, Jimmy Johnson, had a good day.
3. Redskins pull out a victory over the Cardinals, I know it is no big thing for a lot of you but it’s been tough being a Washington fan of late…
4. Great win today for the US in Ryder cup play… Glad folks could see some of the talented young players without being fixated on Tiger Woods… Some really great golf was played today by both sides.

Howdy Braves fans… Slow day on the old B&S blog it appears.. Actually, it is a bit slow on all the blogs. Does this mean we have “jumped the shark” on blogging? Too many other things to worry about I guess.
Last week of the season for the Bravos and it seems as if it could not come soon enough for most. Perhaps the Atlanta organization can get through the healing process without too many setbacks.
I would like to see Smoltz and Glavin return for one last hurrah but my advice to Frank Wren is to stock up on pitching during the off season. Whatever the cost. We have seen that far too often players do not return on schedule and easily have a reversal in fortunes. To me it is something akin to “your check is in the mail”…

Greetings stuffians! The blog was as busy as it’s been in months last week, so I guess a slow down is to be expected…
I tell you what, it will be interesting to see how “we” play the last 6 games. What we saw against the mets was what we haven’t seen pretty much all year. Timely hitting, running when the opponent doesn’t expect you. Just played with more energy.
Also, did I notice something with Frenchy, that I haven’t noticed before??? I noticed on the 3 hits, that his bat came back right on top of his left shoulder….which I never really paid attention to before, but it looked like something he did much more back when he was hitting with authority…Has he done this this season on hits, or not???

It is disgusting, disheartening, dumbfounding and a downright dereliction of duty, not to mention a damnable economic disaster, to see the mainstream media turn their dimwitted heads to let the dastardly Dems get away with the demoralizing debt debacle we’re seeing today. I really don’t think he’s handled this well at all. Not surprising… when the good ol’ boys need cover he’s there for them.
The biased media, the socialist Dems and the spineless, enabling Republicans should be calling for heads and Congressional investigations in the Fanniegate, Freddiegate, Bankgate, Dollargate, Oilgate, AIGgate, Wall Steetgate and Congressional-Graftgate.
Instead, we’re overrun with Mommygate, Troopergate and Alaskan Bridgegate.
Nothing has changed. We’re in a national crisis and headed for ‘hyper-inflation’ and the politicians will continue to lie through their teeth, posture, campaign for themselves, seek power at every turn, cover for themselves and their partisan hacks and do nothing except exacerbate the problem.

Kelly hit 16 homers in 2007, 12 this year. That might work for some teams, but is that enough power for us next year in left??? Of course, more power than we have had this year….If we somehow could get CC(and from what I am reading, he really likes hitting, and would really, really be blown away by an offer by the Yanks) then perhaps we should consider KJ in left…but….I just don’t think that’s near enough offense, and the most likely position we can get improvement from….

Quite honestly, if KJ’s offense were more consistent, there would be no discussion about a position change, and he’d be our favorite 2nd sacker. His defense is no worse than many 2B’s. We as Braves fans, though, are used to great defense from both SS and 2B, given the Braves typical mantra of pitching and defense up the middle. The Braves have had neither good pitching nor good defense up the middle. I like KJ, but am an advocate of trading him if the return is pitching. I’d like to see Lilly the Kid get a shot at 2B, personally. Escobar, Lilly and Anderson/Schafer gives you good defense up the middle. Now, if only we can find pitching… 🙄

Yesterday was awful…
I took my son back to the doc after 3 weeks of arm immobilization (crack in growth plate in left elbow) expecting him to be released back to football having missed only 3 games. Instead, he was sentenced to 3 more weeks in a sling and standing on the sidelines. He was devastated. He’ll now hopefully make it back for only the last regular season game and any playoffs. 😡
Also, Munson retired… effective immediately. We didn’t even get the opportunity to know and listen to his last call. 😥

One more Leo story:
The Braves finished the ’90 season in San Fran with their 97th loss. Prior to the team exiting the dugout at game’s end, Bobby called Leo and his rotation aside to talk to them. His rotation at the end of ’90 was Tom Glavine, John Smoltz, Steve Avery, Pete Smith and Charlie Liebrandt. Bobby told them that they were going to be his starters in 1991, and that they should prepare in the offseason with that in mind. He told them the only thing they should worry about entering spring training was being ready to go every 5 days. Nothing more, nothing less.
Leo said he had never heard of a manager doing that before or since, but he felt that it had an unmeasurable effect on the psyche of every one of those pitchers entering 1991.

Here’s the thing: we ARE seeing the destruction of America as we know it and a methodical disassembling of our Constitution. The citizens are either too busy to pay attention, too brainwashed by the biased media, too greedy about their own self-interests, too damn lazy to pay attention, too apathetic and numb to become outraged or simply too ignorant to see all of the evidence.
The fall of Rome was not unique to civilization. Ignorance and apathy are rampant. “We will destroy you from within”. Tell a lie often enough and it becomes the truth. And other such truths we don’t like to consider.
Anyway Carolina Lady, you’ve inspired me. I’ll suggest a new depository for comments like the one Barney Frank. Yes, from the pursed lips of Barney “I didn’t know my, uh, gentleman friend, um, roommate was using my apartment as a brothel” Frank.
The depository is for those telling little truths of reality, gathered together in one place for the viewing pleasure of even the most acutely attention deficit among us. If the citizenry described above don’t get the facts for whatever reason or didn’t see the actual quotes of people that are changing the course of this country and the world, we can simply spoon feed it to them in brief little snippets. It’s actual quotes or clips, straight from the horses mouth. It’s documented, undeniable truth in a little box, as it were. Only actual words should be there… no opinions of out of context stuff. The unvarnished truth.
We could call it something like, “From The Horses Mouth”.
Now, after the Barney quote, I’ll throw in the second official entry into the collection from a clip that came in just a little while ago:

“But it’s the kind of thing that drives people crazy about politics,” Lauer said. “It sounds like you were trying to score some political points against John McCain using his words, when your own running mate had used very similar words.”

Your beloved government, uh, country is in a financial crisis, as you all know, even if you do live in a bible-thumping, gun-toting, right-wing leaning, backward little town. Just let us say, on behalf of the new United Socialist States of Amerika, we won’t hold that against you. It must be a back woods thing, but we can understand because we saw Deliverance.
That’s fine if you currently have those bad religious and capitalist habits and inclinations. We can provide you with free re-education classes (mandatory). In the meantime we can work around those problems and call upon the elite, uh, smart people in New York, Washington DC, San Francisco and Hollywood to think us through this time in our nation. So don’t worry. Our plan is to eliminate the need for you to think and make your life easier. Isn’t that great! Just think… no more need for those pesky thoughts about complicated issues like money, healthcare, food, education and polluting individual automobiles.
Anyway, we’d like for you all to send us your part of the $700 billion we need so we can fix the economy and get us all out of this financial crisis. We’re not sure about how we’re going do that or where your money will wind up being used or even if our bailout plan works (when we do get a plan), but we are sure you’re all just happy and proud to comply. Besides, we can’t have all those bankers and fat cats selling their mansions and yachts now can we? Wouldn’t be right. Besides, they line our pockets, uh, support our country. They are patriots.
Oh, and we can’t promise that we’ll only need the $700 billion… could be a Trillion. But who cares because we have so many new departments and programs to fund, so many state and federal employees to give raises to, so many new social programs to pay for and so many of your to indoctrinate. The media and PR propaganda costs alone will be staggering.
Not to worry, all of your investment in your government is intended to take care of all your troubles… especially since we all know that you are incapable of making decisions for yourselves.
Just think of us as your big brother. We will watch over you and take good care of all your needs. We just ask that you comply with where we want you to live, what you eat, where you go, when to return to your homes, where you work, how much you work, who you are assigned to talk to, which doctor you visit, what you are taught in school and what you may say in public.
We further promise to separate church and state for you. God will henceforth be removed from all public and private places under penalty of law.

Berigan: Nice article. I’m really looking forward to the off-season. Wren is a new man on this stage. After a decade and a half of watching JS work the unknown of Wren is interesting to watch.
CL and others, my hand is to be freed from the plaster trap tomorrow morning. I really can’t wait. I will not be able to post immediately after as I must go through physical theropy and scent detox. Man this thing is putting out something fierce.
I’ve been limited in posting, but not in reading. It has been easier to post Missives when I have considerable time to type them out than it has been to blog continuously. I found that I’d be horrindously behind on topics making a conversation practically impossible. So I stuck with one-n-dones.
Other than that things are going well on this front. Changes are coming for me personally and I’m curious as to where they will lead.
CL, blogrolls are what I hear get traffic moving (looks like you have quite the list too, is it helping?). But the whole blog managing thing is fairly new to me so I don’t really know. Wish I had more info for ya. I’m not much for tooting my own horn so advertising isn’t a line of work I’m particularly good at. And with that said I’ll sheepishly point to the link under my name. Now, I have re-access my own financial portfolio and have determined if everyone to whom I owe money (as is possible in a melt down) I will still be to the good. That said, I think I can out last the banks because I can still eat. I won’t have to go anywhere so gas will be no problem. I have lots of unread books so no need for the internet… Oh my, it just might be the good old days are right around the corner…

Weird local story:
A short time back, police came to investigate complaints by neighbors of a bad smell coming from a guy’s house. He was really strange, kept to himself and wouldn’t even be in his yard if he saw anyone around. Police found him dead of natural causes.
Then, somebody asked about his elderly, invalid Mother who lived with him. Nobody had seen her for months. Police check inside the house again. Hidden behind a stack of furniture and assorted junk, they found a freezer. And there was Mom, nicely tucked inside with a pillow, frozen solid. It is thought she’d been dead since May.
Now, today’s newspaper has a headline which reads:
Dead son can’t be prosecuted for keeping mom in freezer

Man, oh man….The ATL is pretty much out of gas!! My Dad and I didn’t panic, and now we are paying for it! One car is out of commission(Should have asked Gil, how the bleep do you get a distributor out of a ford product, when it seems welded in?????)and has been for weeks. It probably has half a tank. The other 2 cars have less than 1/4 tank!!!! And wherever we drove yesterday, every single station was out of gas. Heard that one exxon had a tanker deliever early in the day, and was out by noon!
I’m on the south side of Atlanta. How is it everywhere else??? Of course, it seems to just be a problem in the south, we have to have cleaner gas than elsewhere, which means less fuel….just now lifted the waiver….too little, too late.
Ever get the feeling folks making well over 6 figures can’t figure out what anyone with a room temp or higher IQ can figure out????
And I recall hearing some retailers were balking a few days ago at the very high prices the wholesalers were charging. I heard one guy say the seller said to him, well, how bad do you want gas, and he said, not that badly.
I hope the wholesalers will enjoy much more government regulation that will now come their way…..

The gas shortage in the ATL area is a twofold problem. 1st, we get 100% of our gas from the Gulf coast refineries, of which only 14 of 26 were back in operation 2 days ago. Yesterday it was 19, and all should be back up to speed in the next couple of days. 2nd, and just as responsible, is the media driven panic. It is the lead story on every TV, radio and other news outlet that you see. I love how they all say, “Don’t panic, but…”
I was in Tennessee over the weekend, and filled up for $3.49 a gallon.

According to a poll conducted by CNN, Americans blame Republicans over Democrats for the financial crisis by a 2-to-1 margin. That means that twice as many people out there are playing this “blame the current administration” game. Ahhhh … the brilliance of the American voters. It is really no surprise if you consider where most people get their information– Entertainment Tonight. It is easy to sit back and just blame the Republicans, rather than trying to understand how we have gotten to this point. Look, folks, I’m not saying that the Republicans didn’t have a hand in this … but Barack Obama has crept back up in the polls to take the lead over John McCain, and you don’t think this has anything to do with the economy?
And just who was it that killed a Freddie and Fannie reform bill a few years ago? Why, that would be Democrats. And who was it that was saying everything was cool with Freddie and Fannie? Barney Frank; who is not, by the way, a Republican. And who has been pushing lenders to make loans to unqualified borrowers for two decades? Democrats again. Still, the message doesn’t get out. Could that possibly be because of the media love affair with The Chosen One?
Just yesterday, Hillary Clinton said that Barack Obama “is best suited to straighten out the country’s economic problems.” Question … what in the wide wide world of balance sheets is she basing this on? What makes Hillary so sure that Barack Obama is the best candidate to handle the economy? What has he ever handled in his entire life? (Wait, don’t answer that!) This is coming from a woman who said that “once we get through this immediate crisis,” the country should look at some Great Depression-era type of governmental entity to deal with it. I’ll tell you what came out of Great Depression politics … big government. Lots of government. Government dependency.
This is exactly what the Democrats want. They are viewing this entire debacle as a golden opportunity to increase the size of government and expand dependency. Now is the time for you to rely on their party – and their savior, Barack Obama – to lead you out of this crisis and right onto the path of greater government dependency. And it all comes down to one thing, and that is power.

Is it apparent how selfless Paulson has acted. He has allowed himself to be stripped, in some respects, of his dignity for the good of the nation. How you ask?
Look at the ‘ridicule’ wrought over a three-page plan with a concurrent request for expeditious passage. He’s allowed folks to think he’s lost his mind…is an absolute fool. Why? Because he knew the folly present in sending a detailed proposal before Congress. He knew whatever was presented would be parsed, sliced, and diced…and bloviated over ad nauseum. He also knew something needed to be done and soon.
He swallowed his pride and posed a basic roadmap, knowing it takes far less time to digest three-pages, and ‘humbly’ gave Congress it’s opportunity to input details. Thus, after a day or two, there is progress being made.
Perhaps I’m giving him far more credit than due, but neither do I think the man’s a fool. He left enough space on the ‘canvas’ for parties to place their stamp, yet maintain momentum towards getting action that is light years in speed relative to most government action. Essentially, he used Congress’s typical approach to an advantage rather than let it be a burden.
As we know, Congress typically argues over the placement of a tree, oblivious to the fire consuming the forest. Paulson positioned his solution such that know one could ignore the fire…so the focus could be on who mans the hoses, and where they should be placed.

I have had difficult finding Premium gas. The suppliers should focus on providing Premium first since the more expensive cars typically require it. People who drive more expensive cars are the ones providing jobs and need to get to work more urgently.

After reading through your bio, I couldn’t help but appreciate your minority status as a happily married, Christian, Conservative leaning Physicist living in Long Beach, California. Enjoyed your ‘Dem Double-Down’ article. It was a well researched, thought provoking and nicely written piece. I was particularly interested in the polling data you’ve linked and discussed. As with other highly personal, socially sensitive or controversial topics, I imagine election-polling data tends to be pretty skewed toward capturing of opinions that voters think they should have as opposed to what they really believe, but would only admit in an environment of complete comfort, secrecy and trust.
Our upbringing, social and environmental influences, geography, education and a primal, nearly irresistible urge to join groups all affect our beliefs and tend to instruct us in our political and social behavior. Many of those same fallible, biased and imperfect human beings vote. Most voters are biased towards their own group and around their own beliefs. Race is one of those touchy subjects most folks shy away from… which is unfortunate.
Your article addressed parts of the race issue nicely in an appropriately academic and neutral manner. The differences between races have caused mistrust and conflict since the beginning of time. To a lesser degree and due to our own societal evolution, those differences are less today than ever before… yet racism remains fully intact.
In America we have our Constitution, where all men are created equal and we have our freedom of religion. We are a nation of laws and our social programs level the playing field for all citizens to some extent. Our laws protect us and guard against discrimination regardless of race, creed, color, sex, and national origin, religious and political beliefs. Well, maybe we’ve made great strides in most of those areas. We may have taken a few steps back on our respect for opposing political viewpoints.
On top of all of those laws, policies and practices, our culture has followed suit in more personal ways. Point is, seems that never before in American history has there been more of an effort, regardless of core beliefs, to at least publicly show respect and behave in a civil manner toward those that are different.
As it should be.
Now, in that context and with that basic premise, my stream of thought takes me to the part of your story that relates to the polling of voters on race issues. Depending on how survey questions were constructed and the quality of the target list, quantitative can be useful to varying degrees yet not yield near the accuracy or understanding of qualitative polling in a research environment where anonymity is assured.
Stating the obvious again, although the qual beats the quant in truthful, meaningful responses… it is more time consuming and costly. Even more detailed yet costly in time and money would be in-depth psychographic studies on a properly screened demographic. These types of studies surely have been done. I haven’t seen them but it would be interesting to take a look.
Research isn’t perfect and the analysis of and opinions derived are not only effected by the questions posed and the environment the voter was in during questioning, but the results are always skewed to some degree by the interpretation of the answers… not to mention the inherent bias of those doing the poll and writing up the results.
It’s actually more complex than complicated but at the end of the day, our insight is increased a little or a lot by the removal of barriers between voter and pollster. Most pollsters aren’t capable due to time and budget constraints to dig that deep. Such is life in an era of topical research at the speed of sound, superficial knowledge and sound-bite communications in politics and other matters of state.
Add to that, our understandable over-sensitivity in questioning those groups that have been the victims of racism. Subtle little things we do and say divide us. For instance, in your article you stated:
“For instance, the Bradley Effect was cause for concern in a Tennessee political race. Harold Ford, an African American Democrat, was running against Bob Corker, a white Republican.”
Not meaning to nitpick, but I noticed a grammatical or cultural discrepancy there. Should we not refer to all races as either hyphenated or not? It’s not a stretch to imagine that Bob Corker would be an English-American, just as Harold Ford is an African-American.
I’m not criticizing your comment nor am I pointing out grammatical inconsistencies at all, the Lord knows I’m a habitual violator of English, but merely using that example to illustrate a point about the inherent oversensitivity and barriers (and hyphens) we place between ourselves and other people. We’ve all been ‘trained’ to refer to blacks as African-American (even in some situations where there is no African heritage), yet we refer to ourselves in the generic ‘white’.
Again, not criticizing your excellent article or your superb writing. I sometimes hyphenate American blacks and refer to them as African-Americans myself, but here I’m just making a point that could be a microcosm of why polls are imperfect and perhaps how the Bradley Effect reaches so far into our culture and deep into our collective psyche.

Now, after reading the ajc story on gas lines, shortages and such, I’m beginning to wonder if I should take spare cans on my trip there. I saw Berigan’s gas quest. Any updates on availability? Maybe I’ll just fill’er up in Macon.
Saw where the Fed has just loosened restrictions on the “smog-busting gasoline requirements” just to fill the orders. That, on top of the Dems deciding to let the offshore drilling ban expire just goes to show that common sense creeps in when people are inconvenienced with long lines or high prices.
There is a silver lining in this. American is far too spoiled to ever go socialist.

By the way, I really don’t think your hyphenated inconsistency was a grammatical error. Instead, it’s an all too common and widely accepted practice to call blacks African-Americans and refer to whites as, uh, whites. No problem at all but (as I’m inclined to do) it causes me to look beyond current trends, behaviors and habits into the deeper issues around the things we silly humans behave and communicate. Maybe it’s an occupational hazard.
I’ve discussed this with my close black friends and they agree with me. I’ve discussed it with blacks that were friendly aquaintances and they were mixed in their response to the question/premise… which I also found interesting.
Anyhoo, it’s all good. We’re all equal where it really counts.

He says that when we get off the backroads to I75 if there’s no gas at the exit we’re coming back here for a few days to wait it out.

G’morning. Drove up to the local QT last night and got gas with no problem. The RaceTrac across the bridge had a tanker truck downloading when I drove by. The local Kroger (yes, we have a Kroger in Jefferson; it’s the largest in Georgia) has run out of Regular a couple of times, but has had Mid and Premium. Finding gasoline in Jefferson is not a problem. Finding gasoline closer to Atlanta is a problem mostly because of the media driven panic.
Let’s face it. If the media can fuel (pun fully intended) a panic, be it gasoline, hurricanes, climate change, etc., they can grow an ever needy patron base. It’s not too much unlike the dope pusher who metes out a few freebies to get his customers hooked.

20 years ago, also as a 3B, I had the exact same symptoms; I mean exact same symptoms. I also had the exact same diagnosis. 6 months and 3 doctors later, an MRI revealed a torn rotator cuff. The subsquent surgery also revealed a torn labrum.

Obviously, they have yet to actually diagnose a serious injury, but the expected return time from Chuck James’ September RC surgery is mid-’09. I think it’s entirely possible that this could turn out to be the impetus for a much-discussed move to 1B for Chipper.

Florida Rep. Alcee Hastings on Wednesday warned two minority groups to beware of Sarah Palin because “anybody toting guns and stripping moose don’t care too much about what they do with Jews and blacks.”
Hastings, who is black and a Democrat, made the comment in Florida at a panel discussion hosted by the National Jewish Democratic Council.
Hastings was explaining what he intended to tell his Jewish constituents about the presidential race.
“If Sarah Palin isn’t enough of a reason for you to get over whatever your problem is with Barack Obama, then you damn well had better pay attention,” Hastings told the audience, which burst into laughter and applause, according to individuals present.
Hastings, a former federal judge, was impeached and removed from the bench in 1989 for perjury and corruption. Elected to Congress in 1992, he supported Hillary Clinton during the primaries until she conceded the race.

So, I look at your lineup and think, gee, shouldn’t we have Anderson/Schafer in the leadoff spot??? Fine….but, then who bats 9th??? Hmmm….if KJ doesn’t hit for 3 months like last year, fine put him there, but if he’s hitting? No way. Perhaps it is best to have A/S in the 8th hole.
Having speed at the bottom of a DH team is great. But, it’s kinda wasted in the NL. I don’t know, might work.
Then again, we may need to think of trading Yunel and or KJ for pitching. I know, I know, what am I saying??? It wouldn’t be my first thought(at least Yunel) but… what if CC signs with the Yanks???(His family is west coast, but if the Yanks offer 40 mil more than anyone else, well, money talks.. so it sounds like we would have a lot of barriers to overcome) Sheets may be damaged goods. AJ Burnett, sounds like there’s a good chance he stays in Toronto unless they are really cheap with him. Derek Lowe wants to play on the east coast and like I said, I don’t know if we count or not. Who’s that leave??? Jon Garland??? Don’t know if he will re-sign with the Angels or not, and he’s not a 1 or 2 starter. Kyle Lohse?? Great year this year with the cards, 15-6, 3.78 ERA. I know most of you don’t agree with me, but seeing us play with passion , with “grit” the last few weeks, makes me think Infante and or Prado can fill in at least one of those positions. And while Infante is not Yunel, he’s still pretty good, and would likely do better playing SS every day. Prado would certainly provide more consistent defense at 2nd base.
Also, we might not be able to get Dunn, though I think a walk machine would be a great influence on the team…someone else might sign him, which means trading for a bat…
So many questions!!! And a post that most be half as long as a typical SG post!!! 😛

B: If I were to make a trade for pitching, giving up one of our everyday guys, I’d trade Yunel. He has great value in that he is a top shelf SS, and is pretty darn cheap. If I could get a #2 pitcher for Yunel and PTBNL, I’d do it. Then I’d go:

I know you and Gil like Lillibridge a lot…and I have sure heard good things about him. Honestly though, he just turned 25(Wonder if he’s pulled the opposite of some latin players, and made himself older, he truly looks like the ball boy!) He just doesn’t look big enough to play every day. And he seems to have regressed as a hitter. He sure can field though!
Omar is 27, Prado is 25, but even though he can play 2nd, 3rd(and now 1st and left) has he played any SS???
Checking out stats at the baseball cube, I saw something interesting. Lillibridge has a .270 minor league BA, Prado has a .300 BA! I sure didn’t know that!

As to liking Lilly, I’m not a huge fan, but the kid can field and knows how to play the game. Offensively, he’ll never be what Yunel is, but if I can get a good pitcher, I’ll sacrifice the offense and bat Lilly 8th. Remember Rafael Belliard?
Why trade Yunel? Well, it’s pretty simple to me. He has the most trade value; he’s young, talented and well known in the league and plays a position that is always in demand. Also, he is streaky and emotional. Not a knock, just a fact. Yunel plus Blanco would net a decent pitcher.

B, Bobby always props his players, whether they deserve it or not. It is a very rare moment when Bobby doesn’t portray one of his as if they’re future HOFers. One such moment I can think of recently is his scathing of Jo-Jo. That, my broke-lazy-sickly-living in Jonesboro friend, is a statement of note. I doubt we’ll see Jo-Jo next season; at least not in the bigs.

A few weeks ago I had a short conversation with Ed and talked about what I thought of it here and if I’d be open to playing here. Like I’ve said, I think…yes definitely. The geography doesn’t really matter anymore. I think first and foremost I want to be on a winning team and have the best possible chance to be where I’ve never been before, which is the playoffs.
It seems this was a consideration for Wade all along when he made the trade for Wolf. Overall Wolf has a 4.30 ERA in 190.3 innings. He made all his starts and posted a solid 7.6 K/9. Wolf averaged 88.8 mph on his heater, showing more velocity than he had in recent years.
With a fair offer, the Astros might be able to sign Wolf before he hits the open market. He earned $8.5MM this year, hitting all his incentives. It might take three years and $30-35MM to sign him. At the least, the Astros can offer Wolf arbitration and snag a draft pick since he’s a Type B free agent.

Ahhh,,, Home Sweet Home. Sleeping in was a rare treat. It’s a beautiful and a cool 63 degrees here on the coast. Only the sounds of nature can be heard out my window this fine Fall morning. The songbirds are singing, the Blue Jays are squawking, the Cardinals are chirping and chipping, the Wrens, Warblers and Sparrows, Flycatchers and the occasional Titmouses’ are trilling, whistling and chipping and chattering. A winged symphony.
All the while the coffee is percolating and Stuffville is snoring away. Just me and the birds. Think I’ll leave the TV off today so I don’t have to listen to the talking heads tell me who won last nights debate and spin it every which way to suit their own bias. Birds chirping tell us more.
Now, baseball: Phils win, Brewers win, Muttrodome’s lose. The obnoxious Mutts fans don’t have anything the crow about on the blogs (another bird reference). Gotta love that (was that a cheep shot?).
Hopefully they finish strong this weekend and the kids play good to end on a positive note (another music reference). Now there’s plenty of time in the off-season for our decimated pitching staff to rest, strengthen and heal their broken wings so they can fly next year (many bird analogies).
Advice and hope for all injured pitchers.
Life is good. Birds, baseball and Fall mornings make it better.

Seriously, I kind of had a bad feeling, didn’t want to watch it….Had visions of McCain saying something like Ford did about Poland not being a communist country or something….but, I saw a few minutes at best buy, and I didn’t hear anything too stupid.
Came back home and though McCain was more than holding his own. He was in the attack mode, but that’s alright, got to show folks you want the job.
I am biased,but from what I saw, he came out slightly on top. Obama did pretty well, all things considered.
They both speak better than Bush does. 🙄

Hey… nope, been traveling but home now. Takin’ a break from cleaning out the veggie garden. Didn’t have a good year with the okra and ‘maters this year. Dunno what happened, usually I supply the whole neighborhood but this year the plants were weak and didn’t produce much. Much like the Braves… not a good year.
On the debate, I thought Obama “won”, on style, articulation, appearance and tying issues together in a timely, coherent and intelligent way. McCain spent too much time on Eisenhower and ancient politics… and he missed about 50 opportunities to deck his opponent but for whatever reason, didn’t. The stage and podium (and formal debate) is not McCain’s best communication platform. That, and McCain looked old and quirky. We all knew he would. So, for all of those reasons on all of those accounts, Obama technically won. Style trumped reason and truth.
Now, if you know these men and their backgrounds, their experience, character and their actual records of bills authored, policies supported and legislation passed, you would have seen right through the difference between a well-studied, articulate, lying debater and his authentic albeit maverick opponent.
As far a truth is concerned, McCain won hands down
Trouble is, the ignorant audience that hasn’t already made up their minds based on what they know of the candidates policies, experience, character and political/social tenets because they don’t have a clue… still don’t. They will choose the one that talks the best or the one the media swoons over. We know who that is.
McCain needs to pull the sledge hammer out next time and smile before he strays from the moderator’s question to throw the unvarnished truth out to Obama and the world to highlight the suspicious, extreme, radical left ideology and mention his many dangerous friendships and comments from his own ‘Dream of Father’ book. McCain should do this in a gentile way that sounds respectful but is actually a poisonous, fatal dagger.
It would be gratifying to see the ‘Chose One’ called on the carpet on things he’s said and done… things the media will never expose. The debate may be the only forum McCain has to drop those bombs and have them heard.
Not sure why Mr. McCain hasn’t called me for this advice. 😆

Good afternoon all, it has been a hectic couple of days for me. The nursing home called yesterday morning at 6 AM to tell me they were sending my mom to the hospital as she was having difficulty breathing. Turned out to be congestive heart failure.. Anyway, she has dodge another bullet but I don’t really know how many more times she is going to withstand the onslaught of time. She just seems so frail to me now.
Anyway, SG your assessment on the debate is pretty much dead on. I have come to see Obama as someone’s mouth piece. All I can see is a president that takes his directions from Nancy Pelosi and Chris Dodd and the rest of the liberal left.
Thank goodness the republicans in the house are holding out…
Now baseball…. The Braves’ magic number is 2… Then reset for next year with a clean slate. Most likely changes for the Braves will be in the outfield. I would not bet the farm that the Braves will keep Francoure but would not bet they wouldn’t trade him for pitching either… I think Bobby will keep Blanco or Anderson but not both. Matt Dias will likely be traded for a bag of balls and some new bats. Uh… maybe he can join the rest of the misfit Braves in D.C. The Nats have had pretty good success rehabilitating Atlanta’s castoffs.
Bottom line, everybody needs pitching, watch out for San Francisco and the Marlins next year… They are loaded with good young arms…

Gil, sorry to hear about your Mom as well! congestive heart failure sounds bad, which it is, but people can live a quite a long time with the problem. My Mom had it the last few years of her life, but it was the Cancer that got her.
The most amazing case I have heard of is my Mom’s Niece’s Father in Law. He’s in his late 80’s and still kickin’ He’s outlived my Mom’s Niece(She died of Cancer in 2004) and my Mom, who died in 2005. Saw him at my Cousin’s funeral with oxygen tank in hand. Looked like a man who wouldn’t be around 3 years later, but he is…..

Why isn’t Santana’s name ever mentioned in Cy Young talk??? I seem to recall a certain artist telling me Santana was no big deal, wasn’t going to make a difference for the Mutts…how he would have trouble in a new league, etc, etc, etc. Well, he’s 16-7 with a 2.53 ERA. I think the bullpen has blown 7-8 games he had the lead in….Kind of what has happened to Smoltz in years past. Pitched a complete game shut out today, on 3 days rest.
If he was 22-6, with that ERA, he’d be a cinch, wouldn’t he????

Brew Crew is in! CC Sabathia is a warrior and a work horse… complete game win. Wouldn’t we like him in a Braves uniform next year. The guy is old school amazing.
Braves lose, but I was doing some serious channel jumping between Mutts and Brewers games. Hampton may just be a good pickup for someone next year with his performance since coming back. Still, it’ll be a gamble with massive incentives and as low a salary as possible. After all his DL time, wonder if the Bravos will even tender an offer?
Josh Anderson has earned a spot next year. Speed, power and I believe he’ll hit for average when he gets around the league a few times.

I hope you are right about Anderson SG! He hit .358 and drove in 11 for Houston last year, and they still traded him away. And he’s 26 now. If Prado and Infante are permanently stamped as role players at the same age, why not him as well??? 🙄
Oh, WS, who shall win it??? Good question!!! The Cubs are 100 years away from their last WS win, and have so much talent, it’s just ridiculous…and we know what often happens to teams like them. The Yankees last year looked like a team that would roll over any and all teams…didn’t happen. The Phils last year looked the same way with their offense.
Rockies looked like a team that since they kept sweeping, was the team to beat. Swept, weren’t they???
So, I would guess the Cubs in a nose over the Phils, vs the Rays in a nose over the Red sox. With the Cubs beating the Rays in 7. IF the Red Sox get in, and Beckett is healthy??? They win it all, plain and simple.

Well, Corky finished the year at a robust .083, after going 0-2 today with a RBI. Last hit was July 21st. My dream for next year, is a back up catcher that can at least hit half his weight! 😛

Unless the Angels have a major slump, they’ll be in the WS and probably stomp the NL team. They rebuilt pretty quick in the last few years didn’t they. Maybe Tex’ll get a ring the quick way.

Braves were beat up and perhaps some of us were too, but it’s been a real pleasure to visit here.

My observation is no one is going to change their mind about who they are going vote for now if they have been indoctrinated with lifelong propaganda.
Of course, after this week and the massive bailout of wall street, no one in D.C. is going to have any money for their pet projects anyway.

The other day I opined over Paulson’s 3-page plan; my perceived logic on why the brevity…despite the ridicule he was sure, and did, endure.
NOW…NOW…tonight/tomorrow morning it will be voted on…ALL 100+ PAGES!!! I think the man deserves far more credit for how to get Congress to enact change at governmental ‘light speed’. Whether you like it or not is irrelevant, for this post…getting something done is. Deer in the Headlights won’t work.
By the way…anyone catch Huckabee? I don’t agree with him on all issues, but he’s pretty savvy.

Salty, I watched part of it. He is a pretty nice guy and should grow as a TV personality. It is good exposure for him. I have known many politicians to use such venues to improve their visibility and name recognition to the masses.
I would expect for him to be a front runner in the 2012 election cycle for the Republican nomination if John McCain is not elected this year. For sure, all those who vote for Obama this year are going to be really tired of the change they got after four years of liberal mis-management.

I don’t watch 60 minutes…show has zero credibility to me. I can’t imagine the show was flattering to him, but surprise me.
Huckabee is clear on his values, yet doesn’t press others they should feel similarly. He’s seems willing for people to be who they are, and move forward from there. Even if McCain (some how) is elected, he is not a two-termer…I don’t believe. The world situation is really deteriorating, and responding to some very serious threats will be necessary, not unilaterally, but with conviction from our (purported) allies. Real intestinal fortitude will called for.

Iran keeps threatening Israel….what will The Chosen One do??? Talk firmly, and do nothing. Well, get those folks to talk to him at Camp David…have them tell him to his face they don’t care what he says, cuz they know he won’t do anything…and that will be that.

‘Morning, everyone. I’ve been in the deepest pit of dental Hell these last few days. Had a root canal on Wednesday to prevent an abscess from forming. Dentist cleaned out the canal, sealed it up nice and tight. Sent me home.
By the next morning, I was in agony. Abscess formed anyway, except now the only place to go was to expand into the bone. Which it did. Nothing to do but to take antibiotics and WAIT for them to overcome the infection which would reduce the swelling and pressure in the bone which would then reduce the pain.
The only pain medication that has been effective is TWO 5/500 hydocodone tabs WITH 2 aspirin. That would give me a little relief for about 2 hours – then I’d have to wait 6 hours until I could take it again. Forget sleep. Did not sleep from Tuesday night (before the procedure the next day) until early (like 5 am) Saturday morning.
Still far from over, but about 30% improved this morning. Since Tuesday I’ve have: 1 cup of soup, 2 pieces of toast, a small piece of tender, sauteed chicken. And some hot coffee.
Congratulations to Chipper! I’m really glad for him!

Back in God’s country, finally, after a week in Houston for a training course. I didn’t see much structural damage, but Ike layed the smack down on hundreds and hundreds of trees just north of the city.
I bumped into Yunel Escobar at the Galleria Mall on Thursday evening. He denied me an autograph and pretty much acted annoyed that I had recognized him. Can’t blame him…If I was rich and somewhat famous, I’d probably snub some redneck in a Braves hat holding a pen and a post-it note that interrupted my idle time, too. Evidentally I was the only person in the mall who knew who he was, because he hung around there for about 30 minutes and nobody else ever approached him.
I ran into the Hallmark store to borrow a pen and a piece of paper and I told the clerk that I needed it because I was trying to get an autograph from a ball player outside the store. His eyes lit up and he said, “Oh, really? Is it Shaquille O’Neal?” WTH?

CL… A helpful hint, you cannot overdose as long as you are in pain… Sometimes meds need to be titrated to required dose… It is pretty tough to be pain free but usually you can get it down to tolerable levels.

They should tie Obama to the fact he worked for Acorn as a legal counsel. An organization that is so corrupt that they need to screw their shoes on when they get up in the morning…
The McCain campaign also needs to let Sarah Palin be Sarah Palin… They are killing her by having her espouse the official line. Let her state her views and say she doesn’t always agree with McCain but respects his record. Tell reporters they will have to talk to McCain if they want to know his positions…

I’m hoping the Rays pull it off. I’d like to see them play the Brewers in the WS with the Rays winning. It’d probably churn out the worst viewer ratings in history though. But I’d like this two small market clubs stepping over the big spenders.
I’ll be at the Cubs/Dodger games on Saturday. Should be a blast.
