How We Managed To Lose Games We Should’ve Won.

The most frustrating thing in sports is watching your team lose when you know it is more than capable of winning. Surely all fans feel or think or say that as they seek answers to why their team failed to have a winning season and reach the playoffs. For some, like the Pirates and the Nationals, the answer is simple. For teams like the Braves, the answers are more complex. The Braves have an average payroll, above average rotation and that’ll get you to the post season. Get players that’ll get you some runs and you’re there in October.

The Braves are not going anywhere but home when this season ends. Why did that happen? Is it just “the way the ball bounces”? Is it just “that’s baseball”, or is there something or someone that we can point to and confidently and reasonably say, “that was the one undeniable cause of our losing season”. In sports, that is almost impossible to prove and there are as many opinions as there are fans.

Seeking blame is not a helpful exercise nor is it a fruitful cause, but seeking answers to questions and solutions for problems is worthwhile and helpful, even if the exercise is to satisfy our own curiosity and sense of logic, reason, cause and effect. A few excerpts inspired me from a Mark Bowman, MLB article last night:

Jair Jurgens

Jair Jurrjens

“I don’t even know what to say anymore,” said Jurrjens, who has seen the Braves score two runs or fewer in 14 of his 29 starts. “It’s getting frustrating for us now, especially because of how big these games are for us right now.”

I’m afraid this may be closer to what he wanted to say: I do know what to say after playing with this club… that it’s been frustrating from day one in Atlanta. First chance, I’m out’a here.

“Wells was hard to hit at,” manager Bobby Cox said. “He was wild enough to be effective. He would make some real bad pitches and then make the most Greg Maddux-[like] pitches you could ever imagine.”

Another perspective: Hate to mince words but must differ with the skipper… Wells was actually easy to “hit at”. We hit “at” him all night, trying to impatiently force the situation and pull the ball and wound up swinging at pitches way up and way out of the zone. Wells was “effectively wild” (stunk) but occasionally got one over. We helped him out a great deal by swinging at everything except, uh, the ones across the plate.

This season is a nightmare for the Braves rotation, where one run might lose a game and three runs pretty much assures you of hanging one in the loss column.

I’m not tracking, but it seems like we were on a pretty good roll until Chipper put himself back in. His pinch three run double made him forget all about the slumpfest he’s been in, figured he was invincible, happy days were here again and determined he’d play every game after that. That hasn’t worked out very well for Chipper or the team.

But that’s just one player and I don’t hang this or any season on just one player. Was it untimely injuries to McLouth, Infante, Prado, Church, just as they were playing so well? Was it sticking with French and Kelly so, so incredibly long? Did we overlook Diaz too long? Was it the unwillingness or stubbornness to keep Chipper in, or allow him to camp in the 3 spot so long? Is it having Mac bat cleanup when Rochey would be a better fit? Were we one big bat shy of having a winning team?

Should we have kept Conrad in Atlanta to play second, moving Prado to third to let Chipper have some real time off? Should we be resting Mac more and let Ross contribute?

Was it a bad idea to pitch Gonzo and Soriano with big leads too many times or put them in to pitch too often on consecutive nights when most managers would’ve used others in the pen?

Medlen

Medlen

Did we pitch Moylan way too much, especially with him coming off surgery? Is Lowe done as a starter?  Have we mismanaged Medlen enough yet, jerking him around to the point of throwing him out of synch and robbing him of confidence? Has “loyalty” or “patience” with a struggling Norton hurt the team?  Is Garret done as a position player?

As always, there is not one single reason a team loses and not one single player that causes a team to lose the season. “All of the above”  (and more) would be the only viable and fair answer to so many questions about this 2009 season.

Yet, even with all of the injuries (which all teams have) and slumps (which all teams have), our starting pitching has been excellent. With the exception of Lowe, our rotation is at least as good as any in the game. Cy Young could not have won more games than Jair this year with such pitiful run support.

This season, even with less than stellar offense, with just a little less loyalty and patience and that stubborn old playbook, the Braves could be ahead of the Phillies today. We had a good enough team this year but in my humble opinion they were mismanaged all the way. Bobby didn’t manage bad enough to be tossed out in mid season as some owners do, particularly because of the laurels he rests on, and he didn’t manage so blatantly bad that he lost all benefit of doubt about his current capability.

The Braves were managed just well enough to almost win. Luck had nothing to do with this season like it did last year. Our injuries could have been played through. Rally-killing, automatic-out players that were mired in months long, excruciating slumps could have been lifted. Luck played no role in the 2009 season, unless you consider having a great manager that is (still) on top of his game good luck. A few less injuries to key players would have helped as would the good fortune of landing a big bat, but our bad luck in 2009 was bad managing.

Maybe we’ll manage to get’em next year.

Bobby Cox is a players manager, and as such I think he sometimes is too sentimental. Case in point this year is Greg Norton. I think Cox has been a bit too patient with Norton as Greg has struggled all year when we really needed someone to make contact. Also, I’ve followed the Braves long before Cox was manager. Bobby is often one batter too late in pulling a pitcher that is struggling. For instance, Jim Leyland or Billy Martin would yank a pitcher in a heartbeat. No sentimentality for those two managers. I wish Bobby would be quicker to yank. But Bobby is a good guy and it seems like every player that has ever played for Cox has nothing but good things to say about him. Too bad the Braves and Bobby can’t turn that into more success in the post season. Oh well, the 1991-2005 streak was great. Just wish we’d won at least one other WS besides in 1995 🙂

Thanks for the nice layout there, CL. You da hostess wid tha mostest.

Well, the Braves now have no pressure as a team. There are a few players that have opportunities to shine their personal numbers up, a few that can audition on the big stage, a few that need to look over their shoulder, a few that should have been considering their life after Braves months ago and a few that need to face the harsh reality of pro sports, do themselves a favor and retire.

Now we can relax, since there’s no stress for non-contending teams, and enjoy the games and individual accomplishments. In a way, it’s almost easier to enjoy the pure game itself when not contending. Don’t get me wrong… I enjoy screaming at the TV and getting all uptight in a close game during a pennant race. It’s worth the anxiety and the increased blood pressure. The late nights watching late, meaningful games is worth losing sleep over. But that’s all over now.

Now we get to play spoiler and we get to watch pre-winter ball. I’d rather be suffering all those conditions above while the Braves marched toward October, but it’ll be fun. Relaxing. No better sleep than a meaningless game on a Sunday afternoon.

Here’s to the horn-helmeted, singing fat lady and that creepy guy Raisins keeps seeing around. They should be making the rounds with other teams soon. I hope they ignore us next year.

SG, Thanks!!! I was really going to have a tough time cranking one out. When I wrote part 1, I had more free time. What a difference a week or so makes. We even had company today, so I worked some, then cleaned up, then entertained…went into bedroom at one point, was surprised to see the game in the 11th, 2-2! Stayed long enough to see Micah Owings throw 88 “heat” and get Conrad and Infante out leaving 2 runners on. Somehow knew there was no way we would come back. Guess watching this team for the whole season told me.
    Sigh.

In better news, greetings obcbeatle!!! 😀

Great opine SG…. Pretty much sums it up for me too. Certainly, I would never profess to know more about baseball than the venerable Bobby Cox but even I as a lowly fan could see some of the moves he has made this season were doomed to failure.

I doubt Bobby thinks it’s time to hang them up but I would bet there would be no tears shed in Atlanta if he were to announce this was his final season. Well, maybe Chipper and Norton but not anyone else…

I would never profess to know more about baseball than the venerable Bobby Cox

Nor would I, Gil. Cox is a walking baseball encyclopedia, although his in-game management has gone the way of his knees. At this point in his career he would be a much greater help moving out of the dugout and into the front office. I’d like to see him in charge of player recruitment and development.

He could use his immense talent and “third eye” to spot the diamonds in the rough, but at his age and with mobility becoming more of an issue every day, that may be difficult. In which case, he could manage the program and let others execute, but that may not be his forte… managing others. To successfully manage the managers he has to have good managers and coaches out in the field.

Since his first group of team coaches he had by his side through the glory years have all gone, I haven’t been impressed with their replacements or his overall management of them. Not that I have any inside knowledge or sit in the clubhouse mind you… and a great starting lineup with dependable hitting will make any coach or manager look like a genius. Granted, our roster does not allow Bobby that distinction any longer. I just base my opinion on what I see and results.

However deep the knowledge of leaders and managers, how vast their experience, how beautiful their strategy or even how impressive their history of success, we must occasionally look at their current results. (With apologies to Winston Churchill).

    Now, non politics…..

Rough week for the ACC teams. Looks to be a long season ahead for UVa. They are playing a lot like Duke… only different.

The writing was on the wall for Va Tech against BAMA. It was pretty apparent they would fall in the fourth quarter. Still, they had a chance. Just goes to show that you can win using smoke and mirrors as long as there is enough smoke…

And baseball, well… I am glad the new TV season is about to start, gives me something to watch until spring training begins. I am just not that big a fan of football. Too much showboating for my taste. The chest thumping and strutting is more suited to Pro Wrestling if you ask me. I think the end for me was when Jack Kent Cook passed away and the Skins were sold to a megalomaniac.

Little know fact… Did you know that the month of August is the only month of the year without a major holiday? Not to be deter by this fact, my Union, in out ever reaching effort to do less work for more pay, negotiated one into our contract. The first Friday in August became an official plant holiday. We dubbed it St DuPont’s Day… A bit sacrilegious I know but still, it was a good day…. Nothing like having your own holiday. Fortunately, it didn’t exactly catch on nationally.

In other news…. it is very damp here. Rain seems to have become stationary. Good for the grass though.

I do like football, especially the college game. For the most part, I can watch most games whether I have a rooting interest or not. In fact, I stayed up ’til midnight watching Miami and Florida State last night. Although I was afraid I might turn into a pumpkin, I did not; and the game was terrific. FSU was down 4 points with less than 2 minutes; drove it to the 2 with 5 seconds left; QB rolls right… open receiver… catchable if not great pass… bobbled in the end zone… close enough for review with :00 left on the clock… no catch… the U wins. Much natural drama and emotion. That’s why I love it.

That said, it could be a long season for my beloved Bulldogs. Joe Cox better make a dramatic jump, or they better find a QB who’ll step up. Cox looked mighty overmatched on Saturday…

As much as I cringe at the thought of Chipper tearing something while stretching to take a throw, I think it may be time for him to move across the diamond. He still makes the occasional “Chipper” kinda play, but his defense has declined sharply. And we don;t even need to talk about his hitting. Thank goodness his Dad is in town and was at the game last night. We’ll get this whole hittin’ thing straightened out now.

Back to 1B… hear me out on this…

Chipper still has 2 years left on that extension he signed prior to this season. Wow… 2 more years of the decline we witnessed this season. Then what? What will we have at 3B? Now, at 1B, we have a young stud coming up that still needs at least one more season in the minors, and maybe 2. Or, maybe 1 more season, and giving a venerable veteran a day or 2 off here and there. Following me? The rest of Chipper’s contract and Freddie’s arrival could line up nicely.

Take whatever FA money and/or trade candidates and find a young 3B. Honestly, the 1B options are few and far between, with Rochey being among the best. He’ll get better money and more years elsewhere, IMO. I don’t want to go acquire a retread when we have one of those in house. (That wasn’t nice, was it?)

I’ll examine 3B options in a minute… after I take the dog out. He’s whining at me pretty loudly… 😀

    Like

  55. 58 Voice of Raisins September 9, 2009 at 8:58 am

OK… first, let’s look at a few 1B options, so that we can all agree that they suck.

    Top 3 1B options:

Nick Johnson – little power, high OBP. Been there, done that.
Rochey – we know all about him.
Russell Branyan – hot start, ran out of steam. Has come back to earth.

Then you have a mish-mosh of has beens and wanna be’s.

    Now, top 3 at 3B:

OK… they all suck, too. Gotta go the trade rout.

Let’s take a little lookey at the Brewers… the pitching starved Brewers. They have a guy there this year named Casey McGehee, who is only 26, and is batting .295 with 13 HR’s and 50 RBI in just 93 games. Then there’s 23 year old Mat Gamel. While he may be short one “t” in his name, he isn’t short on talent. He is considered one of the Brewers “untouchables”. He is MLB’s #23 overall prospect who hit 11 HR’s in 75 games at AAA this season. He led the Southern League in RBIs, total bases and extra-base hits, he also finished second in average, fourth in OPS and fifth in slugging. It seems even more impressive when considering he played the last two months with a bad elbow and he hit .243 in July and .205 in August. He has better than average power to all fields.

So, is Gamel a possibility or not? And if not, what about McGehee?

All I know is that the Brewers have a surplus at 3B, Braves have a surplus at SP. Why not hook up?

V, interesting topic…I don’t know if switching Chipper to first is a solution or not…but you know…how many 37 year olds(38 next year) play 3rd??? 1st makes some sense.
What has happened with LaRoche here is what I suspected…well, that’s not true. I figured he’d hit .270 and hit some homers, not hit 9 in 34 games. Still only projects to have 26 Hr and 76 RBI’s for the year.
Was it just seeing everyone and his brother traded in Pittsburgh??? He does better in a playoff race??? I just don’t know that he’s worth 10+ Mil he will likely ask for and get.
Gamel is no possiblity if the ultra cheap Brewers (Who still draw tons of fans, yet act like they are a tiny market with no money to spend) wouldn’t trade him for Halladay(which would have put them in the hunt if not the lead for the central-at the time at least)McGehee on the other hand….they really don’t need him, do they with Gamel on the way? Braun was a 3rd baseman originally, and moved to the outfield, so it seems they have more than enough 3rd basemans on the roster.
But…who are you suggesting we trade??? Javy??? Lowe???
    Kawakami???

Braves would have to pick up part of his salary in order to trade Lowe. I just don’t think other teams would be willing to pay him that much money. The Braves were a bit more desperate so agreed to take the payroll hit.

Too bad Kelly Johnson can’t hit for Bobby Cox, then Pardao could play third….

Spring training should be interesting next year, I look for Heyward and Schaffer to both make an impact. So that would leave out Church and move Matt back to the role of fourth outfielder.

For sure the Braves need some offense to go with their pitching.

Schafer may need to remain in AAA for a while. He has missed alot of time since ’08 – 50 game suspension in ’08, injuries in ’09, and has probably been set back in his development. He also will miss the AFL this year. I’d love to see him ready for ’10, but I’m not so optimistic.

Church or Anderson as the back-up outfielder/PH…take your pick…I’d prob’ly go with Church. Sign LaRoche…the market’s right for getting a player at a discount to 2-3 years ago. We’re all for J-Hey…let’s use Freeman as insurance for LaRoche or trade-bait.

At the beginning of the game they showed Chipper in the last 21 games was .116!! McCann the same thing the last 11 games, something like .119. They both went 0-4 tonight.
So I guess they are both hitting about .100 in their streaks. How is that even possible???

Now, in all fairness, your closer is suppose to be able to hold this type of game but not when your arm is about to fall off…. Even the best horse can win when he’s been raced too often.

Changing the subject! Don’t know how much into basketball y’all are, but here is a neat article from the local paper about Michael Jordan, also a local when he was growing up.

    By Chuck Carree
    Chuck.Carree@StarNewsOnline.com
    Published: Wednesday, September 9, 2009 at 11:27 p.m.

I knew Michael Jordan was incomparable when I covered him some in high school.

He scored 35 points for Laney in one half and the quarters were only eight minutes long.

He poured in 40 points on Goldsboro his junior season.

    You get the point.

For the StarNews’ coverage leading to his induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, I contacted several people to trigger my memory and shed new light.

Jordan’s prep coach, Pop Herring, deserves abundant credit for the vision to play him at guard, despite remarkable leaping ability that would have made him more of a forward.

Prep coaches often put the well-being of the team before what’s best for a special talent, yet Herring was the first to tell me about Jordan’s extraordinary intensity and competitiveness.

Back then, a rival coach also hinted to our newspaper that Laney had a junior varsity player named Jordan with immense potential.

As a writer, I only remember significant details, such as when I saw him take off at the foul line and glide in for a dunk. Julius Erving was the only other player I had seen do that.

“I went to one of Michael’s games his senior year and his hang time was off the charts,’’ recruiting analyst Bob Gibbons told me.

Cedric Dickerson, a friend, also pointed out Jordan had massive hands, similar to Dr. J’s.

A year later, he saw in publications where Jordan was among the top players in the nation.

Jordan earned co-MVP at the prestigious Five-Star Camp in the summer of 1980 and later signed with North Carolina. Initially, Jordan had attended the UNC camp, and Tar Heels coaches lined up an invitation for him to Five-Star.

He met future teammate, roommate and lifelong friend Buzz Peterson at the UNC camp in 1980.

Peterson did not see Jordan play there, but heard from one of his high school teammates Jordan could catch the alley-oop.

Peterson finally saw Jordan play when they participated in the Capital Classic in the D.C. area.

After Jordan hit the shot to win the national championship as a freshman, Peterson said Jordan’s confidence soared.

He knew Jordan was special the summer before their sophomore year when he dominated UNC alums in pickup games.

“We knew he was the best player in the country then,’’ Peterson said.

As a junior, Jordan won National Player of the Year and left for the NBA.

Coach Dean Smith, according to Peterson, taught Jordan teamwork and team defense, which prepared him for a once-in-a-generation NBA career.

“Michael had a mental toughness about him,’’ Peterson said. “It is a gift. The closest to having that mental toughness is Tiger Woods.’’

They were roommates two of Jordan’s three years at UNC.

Peterson, now in his second go as Appalachian State coach, will attend the Hall of Fame ceremony Friday. I will cover the event, which means I have come full circle with Jordan, who always drew capacity crowds as a Laney senior.

I remember fans had to show up two hours before games or fire marshals would not let them in.

“I remember I used to call my boys and tell them you have to come see Jordan play,’’ Dickerson said. “He was as special as anybody I have ever seen.’’

Sitting high atop midtown Atlanta, just as the Braves (finally) finish the game as winners.

Got caught in the “midtown meltdown” this afternoon as I was leaving the office. Tech v Clemson traffic jam. More like a parking lot. A usual 10-minute drive to the home away from home took almost an hour. Salty must be glued to the game there.

You guys perfectly summed up my sentiments about Hanson not coming out to finish last night’s game, especially with him pitching so well and with relatively few pitches thrown… low 90’s I think. Plus, it would’ve been the first full game shutout of the year for our starters. Those are the big, little things that make team memories, especially in his remarkable rookie season and in this weirdly botched season. Oh, well. Just adds more should’a, could’a, would’a to the whole thing.

Next skipper? Hmmm… I’ll have to think on that. Perez would be a perfect interim manager, not sure of the long-term. Raisins is correct about the manager that that follows the manager that follows Cox.

Here’s my wish: Wren & Co. choose someone that has proven MANAGING experience, with the skill set that excels in strategy, tactics, recruiting, mentoring and clubhouse leadership without a sentimental bias towards ex Braves.

CL, good stuff on Jordan. When he retired, I retired from watching the NBA, but not because he retired. MJ was great fun to watch and I was an MJ fan… he just happened to retire when the game was about to be dominated by criminals and thugs. Gone were the days of Byrd, Magic, Chamberlain, West, Jabbar, et al. And Isiah Thomas… but now, oh, the humanity! Gil, Dr. J was the man. Pete Maravitch was a pretty amazing guy too. Cut short.

Gil, your “doing nothing” comment reminded me of a joke I saw recently that I’ll try to recap without screwing it up too badly…

A wife asked her retired husband what he was doing. He said, “nothing”. She said, sarcastically, “I thought you did that yesterday”. He said, “I wasn’t finished”.

It went something like that. The original was funnier.

Off to the big white envelope… g’nite.

“I’m certainly not going to stick around for a big contract if I’m not having fun and not producing,” said Jones, hitting nearly 100 points lower than his .364 in 2008. “I’m not saying I’m retiring at the end of this year or the end of next year, but if I become an average player, I’m not sticking around.

“I’m not going to hamstring the ballclub with the money I’m making, and I’m not going to be happy being a mediocre player.”

Just a quick thought on the Bobby Cox situation. I have been a staunch defender of Mr. Cox because no matter how you want to spin it, he was the manager of a team that one 14 straight division titles, best in any sport in history. He didn’t just show up and let the team perform while he fiddled in the tower. He was a part of it – an important ingredient. There is a difference in him now, and I mean more than just results or seemingly bizarre decisions.

Bobby looks tired and doesn’t look as though he still carries the passion he always had. He may say he does, but his appearance belies his words. I can’t help but wonder if there is more at play.

One of the items mentioned when Liberty bought this club was the “stability” of management. Notice that John Schuerholz is still with the club in an upper management capacity. I think there is at least the possibility that Bobby may still be here because Liberty doesn’t want to make any major changes prior to their flipping of the team. Perhaps a gentleman’s agreement. Bobby doesn’t really look like he wants to be there sometimes.

Just a thought… I could be way off.

I am even considering deleting this whole thing before I hit “Sub

From Adam McCalvy, Milwaukee Brewers beat writer at MLB.com:

    Starting pitching

The Brewers have fewer holes to fill than last year, when they faced the free agent losses of CC Sabathia and Ben Sheets. But the urgency to improve this group is much higher. The Brewers went into their off-day on Thursday with the National League’s worst starting rotation — a 5.22 ERA — and Melvin promised this week that he would be much more aggressive this winter in his search for answers.

“We might take a little more chances and risks than we’re accustomed to taking,” Melvin told columnist Michael Hunt.

When it was pointed out that the team also has holes in the field, Melvin responded, “We cannot be distracted by that. Our focus has to be pitching.”

    Infield corners

In one corner, the Brewers will have to decide whether prospect Mat Gamel is ready for the third base job or whether Casey McGehee proved this season that he deserves the job for himself. Both have Minor League options, Melvin points out, and at the moment the Brewers are leaning toward making McGehee the everyday man.

OK… they need starting pitching, we need a young 3B. Each team has a surplus from which to deal. Doug Melvin says he will be aggressive. I’ll bet Frank Wren could find a starter to spare if Mat Gamel, or even Casey McGehee were involved. In all seriousness, one of either Javy Vazquez or Tim Hudson will not be here next season. As important as his rebuilding of the pitching staff for 2009 was, his parlaying of the excess in 2010 may be just as important. Hudson should be extended, and JV should yield us at least one good young player.

From Ken Rosenthal, Q&A with Bud Selig:

Q: The collective-bargaining agreement expires after the 2011 season. Looking forward, do you have to tweak it to further enhance competitive balance?

A: Yes. There’s no question. In everything in life, you have to tweak. You know there’s no question that I think we need a slotting system for the draft. We need a worldwide draft.

You asked about competitive balance. (The securing of amateur talent) is the major vehicle for clubs today to build for the future. My theory is that it shouldn’t only be about money, it should be about management. We need to change the draft. I understand it won’t be easy. But I also think it’s imperative. It’s imperative for the health of the game. I feel very strongly about that.

Q: How much would fixing the draft alone help?

A: I think a lot. The draft from time to time has wavered from (its original purpose). The draft should be to level the playing field. Everybody knows that. There ought to be a spirit of fairness. We need to do that. I have a lot of faith in the clubs’ ability to draft. But those are two major changes (slotting and the worldwide draft) that I believe for the health of the sport must happen.

I think Selig is a boob for the most part, but he is dead on with these answers. Money and signability have warped the balance of the draft. Slotting would allow teams like the Royals and Pirates to draft the actual top amateur players based on talent, not on dollars. It really is the only way these teams can build from within so that they might sustain any success. As it currently stands, “small market” teams have to look at the top player’s agent and demands, and not his talents and abilities. Also, implementing hard slotting would insure that the name Scott Boras would no longer have an affect on the draft order, as it currently does.

I wonder if they have any Coast Guard stations in Iowa which is where that particular Captain is going to be posted to next week….

Good to hear Chipper being honest. No, it’s not very much fun when you have lost your edge….

I once asked my Dad why he retired as he had a great paying job and a good schedule. He said he knew it was time to go when he felt bad everytime he went in the gate and good everytime he left.

Yep, I’ve been their and done that… And SG.. You’re welcome… 42 years worth of public service for me…. And I knew when to leave that too….

Whoever replaces Bobby, I hope they manage the pitching staff better. I’d like to see a new Braves manager that knows when a pitcher is fatigued, and knows when to yank, and just as important, knows when NOT to yank. Apparently this is not an easy skill to learn in MLB 🙂

And to Voice of Raisens, gotta’ love college football! Now that the Braves are out of the hunt I can concentrate on SEC football. I love this time of year, although I’d love it more if the Braves were contending. But even with all the swagger of football there is just something about college football that out shines pro football. Last night I had the choice of watching the the first game of the NFL season, or watching the Yellow Jackets and Clemson. A no brainer for me, and what a great college football game it was. So much more exciting than the NFL. GT dominates the first quarter with some interesting play calling and loks like they’re gonna’ roll all over Clemson. Momentum changes and Clemson dominates the third quarter and look like they might roll over GT. GT wins late in the game with a field goal. And I’m a UGA alumn and a die hard Dawgs fan, but still enjoyed watching this game! There is just something about college football where a freshman can completely turn the game around with either a boner play or a gem play. You just never know.

As for the Dawgs, hope the defense can hold em’ and cause some turnovers. Otherwise, it could be a 0-2 start. Ouch! Hate to even think about it! I think the Dawgs will win a close low scoring contest.

Back to the Braves, not sure what to make of Chipper’s recent comments. I know he is down since he isn’t contributing. I wonder if he will retire after this year?

Another gem by JJ. Geeze…with our starting staff, if we could’ve only averaged one to two more runs scored per game we’d be competing with the Phillies and Rockies. We’ve just left way too many runners on base this year. And seems like we’ve hit into a ton of double-plays. Team speed is a problem on O and D. And it’s so weird to see Chipper in such a hitting funk. Hopefully he’ll play tonight and finish with a flurry!

Bases loaded situations alone this year would change the Braves record. I’ve said it before: never have I seen a team do so little with so much. When the bases are loaded, you just know they’re coming up empty…maybe one run on a really good night.

I was in your neighborhood last night, Raisins. Was working the Dawg’s women’s soccer match. They have quite the facility there…impressive…neat atmosphere. I’ve always enjoyed Athens…so long as W/L’s aren’t factored in! 😆

    Right on, Beatle.

Would be easy to imagine, even with mediocre hitting, being in the thick of it right now. I suppose it was inevitable that Chipper would have a bad year after so many good ones, all considered… but the poor hitting by almost everyone else this year is a mystery.

With just a little better run support and a few less blown games by the pen and we’d have a few starters competing for the CY this year. A big bat at cleanup, even after the AS break and we’d be on top of the Phillies.

    Should’a, could’a, would’a stuff. It ain’t right, but it’s our 2009 Braves.

Wow. The braves defense in the bottom of the 8th…I think thats the worst inning I have ever seen from them, ever.
McCann still doesn’t know how to get down on his knees to keep balls from going thru his legs. Yunel had a hot shot go off his glove while playing in…could have been caught. Then a hot shot in on Chipper who I guess was playing in on the chance Lugo might bunt. Prado fields and makes the worst toss of a ball 6 feet I’ve ever seen…rolled it under Yunels glove. DeRosa stole 3rd off of the middle infielders not keeping him close.
Prado missed tagging a guy headed for 2nd, run scored. Still, game is just 6-5 Cards….amazing…bases loaded, nobody out…will the braves score a run????

    CBSSports.com wire reports

HOUSTON — Astros left-hander Mike Hampton has scheduled his left shoulder surgery for Tuesday in New York City.

Hampton was placed on the disabled list Aug. 14 and decided about two weeks later to have the season-ending surgery. Hampton has a significant partial thickness tear of his left rotator cuff.

Dr. David Altchek will perform the surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery.

Hampton, who will turn 37 on Wednesday, is 7-10 with a 5.30 ERA this season in 21 starts for the Astros. He left his start Aug. 13 at Florida after five innings with the injury.

Boy, does that bring back some painful memories!! My shoulder is worse now than it was two months ago! 😦

And Smoltzie is missing his next start:

ST. LOUIS (AP)—Cardinals right-hander John Smoltz(notes) is being held out of his scheduled start Monday against the Florida Marlins because of shoulder tendinitis.

Smoltz, 1-1 with a 3.27 ERA in four starts with St. Louis after being released by the Boston Red Sox, said Saturday he expects to miss only one start. His next scheduled outing is Sept. 20 against the Chicago Cubs. While Smoltz will not throw again until then, he indicated he could pitch now if this was the postseason.

“As I’ve said many times before, if it was the playoffs starting, I’m sure I could have cranked it up,” Smoltz said. “Like any tendinitis, once you get heated, you’re fine.”

Cardinals manager Tony La Russa says Todd Wellemeyer(notes) (7-9) will start Monday for the first time since July 26.

At the movies and missed the game today. After reading the wrap and the box, sounds like a crazy one. Contending teams might best be afraid of the Braves at this point… they are unpredictable. They can beat the best and lose to the worst. They can look like a high school error-fest or they can play flawlessly. They can all hit or they can all struggle… at the same time no less.

Braves are an enigma. They make a pretty scary opponent, like the drunk wav ing a gun around on the street. They can kill you, shoot in the air or shoot themselves in the foot. It’s crazy. Scary for opponents. Come to think of it, pretty scary for Braves fans too.

The opinions as to why the team temperature swings so arbitrarily and wildly is only matched by equally wide swings in reasoning and conjecture. 😆

Still, it’s pretty cool to see what these boys can do, even without Chipper and Mac in the lineup. We’ve got a hell’uva starting rotation, save Lowe. Hopefully he can find a way to pick it up and allow some skipped starts by Hanson and KK.

It appears the pitching staff has found it, I don’t know who it is but it is there…. Could be Lowe, could be Huddy, maybe even JJ. Just look at how the staff pitched this week.

Now, the Braves need that guy in the line up with the big bat… Use to be Chipper but I don’t think Chipper was ever comfortable being “THE GUY”… Just my opinion, He always had guys around him that assumed the role of team leader. It’s not Chipper’s fault, he is just one of those guys that enjoys being a buddy, not the task master or straw boss who is like Jeter or Puhols.

I concur re: Chipper. I don’t think he’s ever been comfortable with people trying to make him the “captain”. Quietly taking the younger guys under his wing is more his speed. I do think he has the potential to be a very good hitting coach someday but he’d never want to manage.

For any one of us, it would pay great but after making millions per year, I doubt he would go for it, much like Mad Dog.

Guys like Glavin and Smotlz are pretty glib so I am sure they could do the commentator thing. Chipper, uh, not so much….

And yes, Javy pitched a real gem, maybe the best I have seen him all year.

Ber, who knows what to expect from this schizophrenic outfit this year? One game they look like the Bad News Bears and the next they are a bunch of slick fielding gold glovers hitting like the ’27 Yankees….

Still, they are showing great potential. Just a couple of pieces away from being a 95 win season. They certainly have the pitching staff for it.

How about trading Kershin for Adam Dunn? Helps both clubs.

OBC, to toot my horn a bit…TOOT! I was really hoping we would sign that other 37 year old the Phils got instead. Or walk and RBI machine Bobby Abreu. And there were rumors that KJ could have netted us Ryan Ludwick. Imagine how different the team would have been if that trade had happened???
Of course, I was also hoping we’d sign Junior and that would have made Loaf look like Heyward in comparison. And speaking of Loaf, I was thinking Loaf was going to drive in 90 to 100 RBI’s with our offense.
Gil, you may be right, he may still be our best option come springtime. Diaz in right, Loaf in Left if Heyward is not ready??? Sigh….

Funny thing is, Garret Anderson is hitting .275 with 12 HR’s and 54 RBI.

That projects to .254/14/61 over 162 games… really not much more than we expected from guy signing for $2.5MM – 11th on the team, below even Ryan Church. That said, he won’t be re-signed in 2010.

Now Church on the other hand, he’s making $2.8MM this season and will be in his 3rd arb year in 2010. He’ll be back as the 4th OF for 2010 and is perfectly suited for that role. He plays all 3 OF positions, is above average defensively, can pinch run as well as pinch hit and has a little pop. He’s the “Michael Tucker” of this generation of Braves. I’ll bet they’ll seek to extend him for 2-3 years at a team friendly rate, trading years for dollars. He ought to take it.

I don’t expect to see Kelly back in a Braves uni. He has damaged his trade value to the point that he’ll probably be non-tendered for ’10. I can’t see anybody giving up anything of value for him; maybe another player in the same boat. He’ll be heavily shopped at the winter meetings, but I don’t have high hopes for a meaningful swap.

I’d love to see Schafer be ready for 2010, but he has missed an awful lot of time in both 2008 and 2009. He may need more seasoning. That’ll be determined in the spring, I suppose.

You know, for a team that we are pinning high hopes on for 2010, we have a mighty unsettled OF for 2010. We have N8, who himself misses a fair degree of time due to injury. Past N8, who else is settled? Nobody…

We know what Frank’s focus is for this off-season, huh?

In my humble opinion, Diaz is still not an everyday player. He kills LHP, though. Maybe Schafer and Diaz in a platoon for 2010? It’d give Schafer a chance to break in slowly and curtail some of the pressure he had to have felt early this season. Diaz in LF against LHP with N8 in CF, and N8 in LF with Schafer in CF against RHP. Regardless of his bat, Schafer is still the the best defender we have in the OF… period.

If we could get by with the Schafer/Diaz platoon, to go with N8, and if… big IF… young stud JHey is ready to begin the season in RF, the OF could be settled. The problem is, those variables really can’t be answered until spring, and Frank can’t afford to wait that long to address the needs.

What to do… what to do..?

    Excerpt:

“[Hudson] has thrown really well during these first couple starts back,” Braves general manager Frank Wren said. “We know his makeup. We know his work ethic. We know his competitiveness. We’d like to have him pitching in Atlanta for a long time.”

    And:

Understanding the financial variables that could prevent him from continuing to pitch in Atlanta beyond this season, Hudson has opened the door to the possibility of accepting a salary reduction that would accompany a multiyear extension.

Hudson’s contract includes a $12 million option and $1 million buyout for next season.

“I would be glad if they picked up the option,” Hudson said. “But it’s one of those things if they want to discuss not picking it up and maybe going a few years out at some kind of whatever hometown discount, that’s something I’d obviously be willing to discuss with them.”

I would be glad to see Huddy extended beyond 2010 also. Give him 3/$30MM, trade Vazquez while his value is sky high, and your starting rotation is locked up for 3 more years. You’ll actually show a net savings in 2010 from the $11.5MM JV draws this season.

Look, I am on record many times about how I feel about JV. I have liked him since his days in Montreal. But he has never, repeat: NEVER put together back-to-back stellar years. His value may never be any higher than it is right now. We have given away our share of prospects for 1 year rentals lately; I think it’s time to get some back.

JHey is a right fielder… period. Great defense, great arm. It’d be wasted in LF. N8 is the LF of the future, once Schafer can claim CF on a permanent basis.

Soriano? Nor for me. Neither he nor Gonzo have been completely lights out this season, but I believe Gonzo’s struggle are directly related to his being less than 2 years from TJ. Plus, he’s a lefty. I’d prefer to re-sign Gonzo over Sori, but I really don’t see Wren re-signing either. I see Moylan as the new closer. Frank will go back to spending less on the bullpen much like JS did for years.

A blogger across the street made an excellent point earlier today. Frank should spend his limited $$$ on a handful of mid-grade relievers rather than blow it all on one reliever that Bobby will over use. Makes sense to me. I think Moylan becomes the new closer ala Greg McMichael, with Medlen the new setup guy, ala Mike Remlinger.

On Gonzo vs Soriano… Either would be acceptable if they were not required to close 80 games a year.

Rocky has been over throwing a lot of his pitches and thus losing his release point. Don’t know if he is trying to compensate for a tired arm or something else.

Dark Shadows throws nice and easy but when his arm/should gets fatigued he loses movement on his fastball and it tends to stay up in the zone.

I think the Braves will keep the cheaper of the two and use Moylan as their alternate closer next year. Since he is a righty, the most likely one to keep is Gonzolaz. of course a go closer gets both right and left handers out.

I keep thinking the Braves should keep an extra position player next year rather than 12 or 13 pitchers because Bobby C only uses 10 anyway.

I think the Braves keep Diaz for several reasons, the least being he can hit… He is still pretty young and relatively cheap as far as ball players go.

I think Chipper is beginning to feel his age. This season has been a wake up call for a lot of folks. I think his best bet is to finish out his career with an American League team if he want to keep playing. I think Chipper goes when Bobby retires for sure….

I’d really like one of Milwaukee’s young 3B’s, preferably Mat Gamel, but Casey McGehee would be OK. I’d want a couple of throw in prospects, too.

From Adam McCalvy, Milwaukee Brewers beat writer at MLB.com:

In one [infield] corner, the Brewers will have to decide whether prospect Mat Gamel is ready for the third base job or whether Casey McGehee proved this season that he deserves the job for himself. Both have Minor League options, Melvin points out, and at the moment the Brewers are leaning toward making McGehee the everyday man.

I believe this to be the Braves’ current salary obligations for next season:

    DLowe rhp $15MM

    Huddy rhp $12MM option

    Vazquez rhp $11.5MM

    Chipper 3b $13MM

    KK rhp $6.667MM

    BMac c $5.5MM

    N8 cf $4.5MM

    Omar inf $2.225MM

    DRoss c $1.6MM

    MattyD of 3rd year Arb

    KJ inf 2nd year Arb

    Church of 2nd year Arb

    JJ rhp 1st year Arb

Logan, Boone lhp 1st year Arb

Carlyle, Buddy rhp 1st year Arb

    Moylan rhp 1st year Arb

TommyH rhp not yet Arb eligible

Yunel ss not yet Arb eligible

Campillo, Jorge rhp not yet Arb eligible

Marteeen 2b not yet Arb eligible

O’Flaherty lhp not yet Arb eligible

Medlen, Kris rhp not yet Arb eligible

    That’s 12 pitchers (6 starters and 6 relievers), 2 catchers, 5 infielders (including KJ), and 3 outfielders.

I believe they’ll trade a starter, and I believe they’ll keep only one of O’Flaherty and Logan, leaving 10 pitchers (5/5). They’ll undoubtedly add 2 nondescript relievers from either the FA market or the minors. Net = 12 pitchers

I believe they’ll drop KJ, leaving 4 infielders. They MUST add a real 1B for next season, maybe beyond. That’s probably where this year’s $$$ is spent. Freddie Freeman won’t be ready until 2011 at the very earliest. They’ll probably keep Brooks Conrad as the other infield sub, unless they could pull a deal for an Uggla type 2B. Add the 2 catchers, net = 8 infielders.

N8, Diaz, JHey(maybe?), Church plus one more makes 5 OF. Maybe Schafer, but my money says he spends 2010 at AAA Gwinnett to get back on track. Look for another budget veteran LF next season. Net = 5 outfielders.

    Am I close to reality?

Anyway, V I was talking about how on Baseball tonight they were talking about the very real possiblity that the cheap as Bud Selig Brewers will trade Prince Fielder cuz he will start earning big time money soon. He’s 25 and a team that nearly sells out every game can’t afford him? Yeah, right! Anyways, IF they trade him this offseason, the Brewers may have to keep McGee and Gamel. Gamel seemed to be off limits in talks with Halladay, who would have clearly made the Brewers a team to beat in the central(Of course, the Blue Jays wanted even more..at least then)

It’s so hard to tell what Javy is worth to other teams. He also doesn’t like to be out west, which would be a perfect destination for him, from our standpoint. Dodgers, or Angels. Oh well….

Q: When does a player become eligible for salary arbitration?
A: A player with three or more years of service, but less than six years, may file for salary arbitration. In addition, a player can be classified as a “Super Two” and be eligible for arbitration with less than three years of service. A player with at least two but less than three years of Major League service shall be eligible for salary arbitration if he has accumulated at least 86 days of service during the immediately preceding season and he ranks in the top 17 percent in total service in the class of Players who have at least two but less than three years of Major League service, however accumulated, but with at least 86 days of service accumulated during the immediately preceding season.

VOR, thanks for the Dawgs blog link! I think the Braves need a right fielder and first baseman. It’s imperative to get power and RBI’s from those 2 positions. Even if Chipper were moved to first base, he’d need to be platooned (he’s just got bad feet and legs). I’d rather see an every day first basemen. Chipper really presents a problem at third. Sure he can be platooned, but his defense has weakened considerably. Don’t get me wrong. I am in awe of Chipper’s career batting feats. Arguably the best switch hitter of all time and certainly the best batting eye I ever saw…period. I’m really going to miss him whenever he decides to retire. I like Prado. Maybe give him 2nd base and let Infante platoon third? Decisions, decisions. We need speed! The pitching is pretty solid. That is good! But who are the closer(s)? Me thinks Soriano and Gonzo have weakened arms. But so do most relievers these days 🙂 Boy if we can bring up some more talent from the minors that are Hansonlike…then wow! I don’t know much about JHey yet. Man…I’m already looking forward to Spring training 😉

I think Chipper will do the farewell tour thingee… He was really impressed with the way Biggio was honored by Houston and the other teams around the league. Not many players get to experience that anymore. It would also allow the Braves to bring in a guy or two for an audition at third.

Infante is a great bench /utility guy much like Diaz but everyday play has a tendency to expose their weaknesses.

For sure, the Braves are going to add some power to the line-up in 2010 or we are going to get the same thing we got this year. A up and down club that teases us but is not quite good enough.

The Mets won’t be as bad next year as they are right now, their players will be returning. Washington will be better too.

A word about the Nationals… One of the reasons they are struggling is because when MLB took over control of the team, they gutted the farm system. That really set them back. It takes years to build a strong farm system but only one season to tear it down. That said, they are rebuilding so don’t expect them to stay doormats.

Who knows with Florida, they sure seem to get a lot of mileage out of trading guys who are about to get expensive for some really good prospects. Prospects who are helping them win.

So, standing pat is certainly not an option for the Braves. They are going to need to go all in pretty soon just to stay competitive in the East. Does not mean they have to spend Yankees or Red Sox kind of money but they are going to need to stop pinching pennies and pay market rates.

I worry a bit about Moylan. I’ve never known of a guy pitching 80+ games the year after Tommy John surgery. Will Ohman missed almost all this year after being overused last year.
If we give up both Soriano and Gonzo, and Moylan has troubles next year, that could be a real issue. That’s why I think we should at least try to get one of them back next year….

Oh, and did you all see the next story after the Braves???

Over the weekend, I mentioned in my “Full Count” video that some in baseball suspect that the Padres will trade first baseman Adrian Gonzalez or closer Heath Bell and reduce their 2010 payroll to the $25 million range.

Not true, according to one source with knowledge of the team’s plans.

While ownership has yet to give the front office a final budget, it is planning a payroll of at least $40 million for next season, the source says.

How would you like to root for a team with 40 Mil budget being the good news??? 😕

The fellow was looking for a project… He sure has one now. Pretty nice boat all and all. Will take some sweat equity but I am sure he will have it going in no time. He seemed pretty happy with it anyway.

Next item to depart the premises will be the motor home. Leaving one way or the other this week. Too many projects for a guy who doesn’t walk so well anymore…

Okay folks, it’s game time. Later.

    Okay, warning… Political rant coming….

Jimmy Carter today said Joe Wilson’s comment during Obama’s speech was racist. I am sick to death of people playing the race card. If I were black, I’d be embarrassed to think I could not succeed with out some artificial handicap. Cooking the books so to speak to make up for a lack of talent.

People boo Obama for the same reason they booed George Bush and it has nothing to do with race.

What little respect I had for Carter is completely gone now. No wonder even fellow liberals like Ted Kennedy had no use for him. To steal a phrase from one of our old friends, the man is an A$$clown…

Keep it up and there is going to be a real backlash in this country because I think folks are getting pretty fed up with it…

    Oh, and Gil…

Jimmy Carter has been a cartoon for years. Anyone who still gives credence to anything that rolls out of his mouth should have his head examined.

The worst part of the whole thing is that nobody wants to admit that PresBO actually did lie. His national healthcare takeover bill is laced with accommodations for “undocumented workers”. It is only one of numerous schemes to buy Democratic votes from what will one day become a very large voting bloc.

    Jeff Schultz of the ajc:

When asked if he would come back for a 25th season as the Braves’ manager next year, [Bobby] Cox would not commit one way or the other.

“We’ll see,” he said. Anticipating a follow-up question, he repeated, “We’ll see, OK?”

But there is uncertainty about next season. He repeated the, “We’ll see,” response two other times when I asked about managing in 2010. It’s not a subject he enjoys discussing. Cox never likes being the subject of an interview, but especially when it involves a topic that might be perceived as rubber-stamping the end of this season.

“I just don’t know right now,” he said. “I’m not thinking about it. I’m still trying to get us in the playoffs somehow.”

But there’s something about this team that Cox’s critics still don’t grasp: The Braves are only good, not great. With Chipper Jones slumping, they’re closer to average. They have very good starting pitching but sporadic hitting.

If and when the Braves miss the playoffs again, it won’t be because of Bobby Cox, it will be because of the personnel. But it’s the easy answer, isn’t it? Michael Vick breaks a leg, fire Dan Reeves. And where are Joe Paterno’s critics now?

Kenshin Kawakami has brought more than an extra arm to eat up some innings in the bullpen. He has provided a little comic relief.

In the sixth inning of Tuesday night’s game against the Mets, with Tommy Hanson cruising on the mound, Kawakami put on a show for his fellow relievers by imitating Braves’ hitters. That’s one language that needs no translation.

He started with the easy target: Adam LaRoche. He had them laughing at his Brian McCann imitation, right down to signaling for a time-out to take off his helmet and clean his glasses. Buddy Carlyle’s personal favorite was Kawakami’s Matt Diaz. [Peter] Moylan was partial to Kawakami’s McCann and to his imitation of Yunel Escobar jumping in the on-deck circle.

    Joe Cowley, Chicago Sun-Times:

The White Sox will look to trade Josh Fields this offseason, with both sides agreeing the former first-round pick probably would be better off somewhere else.

Fields wasn’t going to speculate whether the Sox might have a change of heart. The one-time heir apparent to Joe Crede said he’s done guessing about his future in the major leagues.

“I used to try, and I would end up either disappointed or completely ecstatic,” Fields said Wednesday. “Right now, I don’t want to be on either side of that spectrum, so just staying in the middle. I’m going into the offseason not having a thought one way or the other. My wife and I are about to have our first kid, so I have enough to worry about. Hopefully, the thought of baseball won’t come up for as long as I can get it out of my head.”

Fields said he and general manager Ken Williams talked right before he was sent to Class AAA Charlotte in midseason.

“Everything has been discussed, and everything has been laid out on the table from both sides,” Fields said. “He knows where I’m coming from, and he gave me the position of the White Sox. As far as I can see, everything stands the exact same.”

The Sox won’t just give Fields away, but expect them to kick down every door to move him.

“I think I can be a big-league third baseman, but I know I’m a big-league player,” Fields said. “Wherever it’s going to be, outfield, third, first, it doesn’t matter to me. I know I can play in the big leagues.”

    Hmmm… interesting…

With the 23-year-old Tommy Hanson, the Braves possess a prized young pitcher that they would obviously like to keep for an extended period. But Jeff Francoeur has already seen enough to lightheartedly project that the young hurler will be pitching in the Bronx once he’s eligible to gain the fortunes that could await him on the free-agent market. “I think he’s going to look good in [Yankees] pinstripes in six years,” Francoeur joked.

I think my foot would look good placed squarely across FrenchTwist’s @$$. In 6 years, he’ll be looking pretty sad in that nasty Royals’ blue, losing more games than the Mutts, wishing he could cut it with a real major league team…

Much speculation around about who will play 1B next season. Browsing through some general baseball publications and blogs, there is actually some Braves chatter. Most of it surrounds the Braves 1B situation. Almost none of it mentions LF. I suppose it’s assumed that JHey is gonna be here. I believe that too. With him in RF and N8 in CF or LF, replacing GAnderson will be relatively painless. But 1B… that’s different.

Almost unanimously, the “outside” sites advocate shifting Chipper to 1B. By “outside”, I mean non-Braves centric. The overwhelming reasoning is simple:

    1) Chipper’s defense has eroded dramatically at 3B

    2) Chipper’s injury history would suggest that Freddie Freeman could get a handful of injury callups, giving him a few “major league auditions” and some limited major league experience in short spurts without throwing him completely to the wolves too early

    3) Prado is capable of being an everyday ML 3B

    4) there are more 2B FA options than most other positions for 2010, such as Felipe Lopez or Orlando Hudson.

Now me personally, I’m not so sure about it. Reading into what Chipper has said recently, he intends to concentrate solely on hitting this off-season – not a new position.

And one more thing… I’ll bet you that if Chipper rebounds offensively in 2010, his defense will reflect it. Betcha…

(That said, Lopez is batting .308 with a .379 OBP as a switch-hitting leadoff hitter. Hmmm…)

Sporting News has a story on Chipper’s possible “retirement” after 2010. Actually there is a little tidbit in this one I haven’t seen before.

“If I back up this year with the same kind of year next year, I don’t want to play the game,” Jones told The Associated Press. “The game is not fun to me when I’m not playing up to my standards.

“I just feel like there are other things I’d rather be doing. Family has a lot do to with it. My boys are getting big enough now, my two littlest ones are going to be starting ball and grade school. I just feel like I want to be there for all that.”

The article also touches on Bobby’s contract situation.

Like I said, 2010 will be the Bobby and Chipper farewell tour. While it is hard to project carry-over from one year to the next, I will go out on a limb (yeah, I know, not like I am putting up my house or anything) and predict the Braves to be very serious contenders next year. Of course, that’s barring injuries to 3/5 of their starting rotation next season… The club is much better than last year’s squad and it is only going to take a few tweaks to get the offense going. They sure do look great when they get their mojo on.

I had a great day today. Went to an event called Field Day of the Past. For us old timers, it a wonderful event. All tyes of antique machinery and crafts and cars and well…. lots of neat stuff…. What was scary was I could name all the old cars from the 30s to the 70s by make, model and year (usually within a year) by sight. I could not tell you the difference between a Ford and a Toyota if it’s been made in the last 10 years. All of them look the same to me now.

    Ken Rosenthal:

Cardinals pitching coach Dave Duncan deserves credit for the many turnarounds and breakthroughs he has overseen. But the true measure of his worth might be easier to assess if his 14-year run with the organization ends after this season.

Tony La Russa and Duncan might be the best manager-pitching coach combination in the game. But, as recently detailed by Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Duncan could depart over philosophical differences with the Cardinals’ minor-league department and his frustration with the media’s treatment of his son Chris, a former Cardinal.

La Russa, who is in the last year of his contract, probably would not follow Duncan — if anything, his leverage with the Cardinals only would increase, and he has little motivation to bolt. None of the potential managerial openings — Houston, Baltimore, Washington, Cleveland — are anywhere near as attractive as St. Louis.

    Would Atlanta be? Drool, drool…

Or Chipper? Or that other guy who used to be in RF – the one on the team that is 20-something games back. Yep, need a bat or two! Three would be better yet!

No hopes for a Braves entry into postseason play is a sound and rational hope that should be achieved. Still… they are winning tonight. Not that I’m watching. I’m not. Nope. Why? Because my local yokel cable station deems it not worthy of airing. I don’t know the reason. Too expensive? Dunno. Disinterest because they are out of it? Doubtful. It’s the money. They are too cheap and maybe Liberty is asking too much. I have no idea. You’d think that Georgia residents might catch a break. No.

Instead of watching the Braves attempt to keep hope alive while playing the only team that could make a difference in their fate, a game in which was announced on TV and listed in the newspaper as airing on CSS at 7:00, we get the supreme honor and thrill of watching Southeastern Louisiana play Mississippi.

Oh, sorry. My bad. Just venting here. I get this way every year when every college football game preempts everything else. I also get this way when the Braves are scheduled, then preempted for a worthless, out of state, out of conference meaningless college football game. Sorry college football fans… I’d rather see the Braves even if they have no hope.

I’m just being cranky. At least PresBO didn’t preempt anything today. That’s a rare bright spot on TV.

Peter Gammons on Victor Martinez of the Red Sox…(More stuff on that page, including talk of Kotchman)
    http://espn.go.com/boston/columns/blog?post=4486950&name=gammons
The fact he is one of those rare switch-hitters whose swing is very similar from both sides of the plate is invaluable. And so is his knack for driving in runs.

Go early and watch Martinez take batting practice. He doesn’t try to play home run derby. He doesn’t wait for perfect pitches. You’ll see him swing at pitches off the plate and dump ugly line drives into the outfield. His BPs are reminiscent of one of the great RBI machines of the ’70s and ’80s, Eddie Murray.

It’s no coincidence. “Eddie was my hitting coach when I came up with the Indians,” says Martinez. “He taught me so much about what pitchers might try to do, what to look for, how to prepare. He told me to take BP at 70 percent. Don’t try to hit everything hard. He taught me that when there are runners on base, take what the pitcher gives you and get the runners in. It doesn’t matter what it looks like, what’s important is knocking in your teammates and winning.”

somehow, I just don’t think that is T.P.’s hitting philosophy

FBG, I imagine it was ugly on Gameday even with that antiquated looking hitter graphic that looks like something just on this side of pac man… but I didn’t see it, thankfully. Going into the 9th leading 6-0 I figured it was safe to walk the dog. If I had seen it I would have probably been saying what Josie was saying.

Soriano obviously has a good arm (albeit injury prone), but I’ve never believed Soriano had the right head to be a closer. Neither does Gonzo. Pitchers with good ‘stuff’ are a dime a dozen. Finding one that is smart enough to know how to get batters out, or know the batter and the situation well enough to let the batter get themselves out, are as rare as diamonds.

In the last two decades we’ve had only one authentic, dependable, unflappable, consistent closer and that was Smoltz. Other than that, we’ve seen alternately brilliant and horrid performances from Soriano, Gonzo, Wohlers, Rocker, on and on. Like a box of choc-o-lates.

Having good stuff is very good in the closer business but that ain’t what does the trick.

Police: Giants’ prospect a suspect in killing

AP-SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic — A Dominican baseball prospect for the San Francisco Giants is the main suspect in the killing of a 25-year-old man, police said Sunday.

Angel Villalona turned himself in 12 hours after the man was shot at a bar in the southern coastal city of La Romana, Coronel Adrian Urbaez told The Associated Press.

Villalona was signed by the San Francisco Giants in 2006 and received a club-record $2.1 million signing bonus. He played in 74 games with a Giants minor-league team this season, posting a .267 batting average with nine home runs and 42 RBIs.

The 19-year-old was considered the Giants’ most prized prospect when he signed and was chosen the top prospect in the Arizona Rookie League two years ago.

Frank Micheli, president of the Azucareros del Este — Villalona’s winter baseball team — said he was aware someone was killed but that he had no further details.

Villalona will appear in court Monday and could face up to 20 years in prison if found guilty in the Saturday night killing of Mario Felix de Jesus Velete, police said.

Tim Dierkes of MLBTR notes that a 20 year sentence “would probably affect his prospect status.” 😆

From Buck Belue at sports radio station 680theFan:

Sure hope Bobby Cox is back managing the Braves next season. But I’ve got a hunch that we are seeing the final days of his Hall of Fame career. Normally, the skipper has signed a contract for next season by now. Could it be his great run is coming to an end? Schuerholz & Wren have always been on record as saying Bobby can manage the Braves as long as he wants to. It’s up to him. Their take is this: We’ve got one of MLB’s greatest managers ever and it’s his job until he decides to step down. I’d say Schuerholz and Wren have played this the right way, with the open-ended, hand-shake agreement. Greats like Bobby deserve that. So, why I’m I concerned that we are seeing the last of Bobby Cox in uniform? I have no inside information. Just reading between the lines. Bobby told us at Spring Training in 2007 that he would probably retire after the 2008 season. And here we are one year past that date. So, he’s been seriously considering this for 3 years now. Guess when you’re 68 years old this is something you have to consider. But the idea that he has been dwelling on it for a few years has me concerned this might be it. Cox is not one to get all caught up in the critics, but he’s aware that some fans are blaming him for 4 straight years out of the postseason. And these are the same fans that blame him for only one World Series banner flying down at Turner Field. Just wish he could feel the respect and love that the majority of the Braves fans feel for him. But the critics always scream louder than the supporters. Don’t you know that Bobby Cox wants to go out after leading the Braves back into the postseason. But that just hasn’t happened. That’s got to be frustrating for a skipper than has seen his teams win over 2,400 games. This year was his best shot to get the Braves back to playing ball in October, but they will come up short. Bobby spoke about his plans recently and talked about how he still finds the job fun. He still loves the competition. But then, he says this: “I guess I’ll be sitting down with management after the season.” That doesn’t sound to encouraging to me. Could it be that management now thinks it’s time to turn the page? Attendance is down. Four years out of the postseason. A perceived mishandling of the bullpen. Too much loyalty to Norton. Could it be they think it’s time for some new energy? And what names are on that A-List to replace Bobby? Pendleton? Fredi Gonzalez? Ned Yost? I wonder. Who is stubborn enough to follow one of the top 5 managers of all-time? And can they measure up? If this is it, let me say how much I’m going to miss seeing Bobby Cox in that Braves uniform. It’s been an honor. And thanks for all the memories.

I think Buck has hit it on the head here…

Many believe that Ned Yost is already in line. Tough call there. On the surface, I really like him. But he lost his team in the middle of a playoff run. Even through odd decisions and tough times, Bobby NEVER lost a team. Never. Maybe Neddy can use that as a learning experience. You know – how NOT to manage late in the season..?

One more thing. Would a new manager bring in new coaches? I think Roger has done a commendable job as pitching coach, but Leo Mazzone is on record as saying he wants to get back into a dugout.

Now there’s an interesting thought. Y’all did know Leo was a minor league manager prior to being hired by Bobby into the Braves system, didn’t you?

    Will Bobby be back?

    Who will play 1B?
Will Schafer need more time after missing so much of ’08 and ’09?
    Does JHey need more seasoning?
    Who will play LF?
Do you pick up Huddy’s option, extend him, or let him go?

Gil…and to think there is a water hazard already…just occupies a second zip code now!

CL, you have to ask yourself why they’re driving into the water so far before they realize, “Uh, oh!” Sadly, a woman called her family around 5:00AM saying the road had suddenly been swallowed up by a nearby creek. Emergency services were sent straight away…found her vehicle several hundred yards downstream. She wasn’t the only fatality, as you saw from the AJC links.

The storms here in Woodstock kept forming just southwest of here and training over us. When Ma Nature makes up her mind…you have to buckle up and hold on. Quite a day.

If you looked at the Lake Lanier link earlier, go back now and look…the level is up again. There’s an article in the AJC saying the water flow into the Lake is at near-record levels. These past few days have been a ‘perfect storm’ of sorts. Not everyone gets wet daily, but over the past week, no one has escaped less than six inches of rain.

Ya know…if we can put a man on the moon…why can’t we create a system of canals/viaducts to move water from one area to another? Doesn’t it seem silly to flood in one spot, and have a drought a mere 300 miles away? Look at the job creation, the energy source to be utilized, transportation capabilities (maybe 🙄 ) and the agricultural impact. How’s that for stimulus?

Then again…the backlash from environmentalists will stop everything. Alas…to the moon…and BEYOND!!!

Yep, that is the truth right there. We had some minor drainage issues in my back yard earlier this year, and had a couple of catch-basins and a drainage line installed. (That’s when they cut my phone/data line.) Man am I ever glad about the timing of that decision! Without it, my back yard would be a pond right now, and my septic system would be in my living room. 😯

Alas (first on blog?), we are located such that there are no flooding issues right here. Now, amazingly, there are many houses nearby that are suddenly lakefront property…

    Gordon Edes, Yahoo! Sports:

Another situation that bears watching is in Atlanta, where manager Bobby Cox has been hedging about whether he will be back. According to a major league source, the relationship between Cox and GM Frank Wren deteriorated during the spring to the point that Cox packed his bag and climbed into his car to drive home from spring training until dissuaded from doing so by one of his coaches.

Cox was unhappy at the way the John Smoltz issue had been handled, the source said, and because he had not been kept up to speed on other personnel decisions. The relationship appears to have been patched up, although the parting with Tom Glavine was another strained episode, and the expectation is that Cox will be back because he’s excited that the Braves have another core of young talent developing. Stay tuned.

I wonder just how accurate that report is. I can’t imagine that incident could have occured without someone reporting it, but who knows?

I also can’t discern if Edes is betting he’ll be gone, or he’ll be back. He kind of hedges on both fronts. It almost smacks of a little sensationalism to me.

    But what do I know?

Despite an attendance decline and the likelihood of a fourth consecutive season out of the playoffs, a top Braves official [Terry McGuirk] is bullish about the future and said there are no plans to trim payroll or sell the team again.

Another point was a commitment by Liberty Media to retain ownership at least for the current collective bargaining agreement, which runs through the 2011 season. McGuirk said he believes Liberty Media is “enjoying” ownership of the team so much that it might keep it for years beyond that.

While the Braves aren’t likely to raise payroll significantly — it’s probably not going to $100 million soon — McGuirk said it could increase some if team officials agree that’s necessary.

    Mark Bradley, ajc:

Gordon Edes reported Tuesday that [Bobby] Cox had been so angry over the handling of John Smoltz’s departure and the failure to be included in personnel discussions he packed his bag and had to be talked out of leaving spring training by a Braves coach. Asked if that had indeed happened, Cox said, “No.”

Asked this morning about his [contract] status — Cox, who’s 68, is not under contract beyond this season and hasn’t said whether he’ll return for the 2010 season — Cox said: “We’ll probably have an announcement when we get off this road trip.”

The Braves play their final road game of the regular season in Washington on Sunday. They return to Turner Field for the season’s last week beginning Monday night against Florida.

My money says he’s back for one final season in 2010, then both he and Chipper ride off into the sunset.

Buster Olney’s Insider report regarding Bobby, “borrowed” from a post that “borrowed” it from ESPN:

Baseball could soon lose a giant

    Wednesday, September 23, 2009

Bobby Cox first mentioned walking away from baseball in the spring of 2008, and when word of this reached Gene Michael, a former teammate and longtime friend of Cox, Michael burst out laughing. “He’s not going anywhere,” Michael said. “He’s a lifer. What else is he going to do?”

Cox signed with the Dodgers in 1959, reached the majors in 1968 and played for a couple of seasons, and incredibly, this is the 29th year that Cox has managed a major league team. There will be a day when he will be inducted into the Hall of Fame. For those almost three decades’ worth of seasons, players have heard Cox cheerily call to them from the dugout and encourage them. He has always been known as a great manager to play for because he is supportive and positive and consistent, and his players feel like he treats them with respect, and doesn’t overwhelm them with rules or his own ego.

What has enabled Cox and Joe Torre to last as managers, I’ve always felt, is that they like players; they like people. They aren’t overwhelmed by any anger or bitterness toward the players that are increasingly younger than they are.

But it turns out that Gene Michael might be wrong.

It is apparently possible that sometime during the postseason, Cox is going to walk away after 2,407 victories (and counting) as a manager. His contract is set to expire and he has declined to answer questions about whether he will be coming back for 2010. Braves general manager Frank Wren also declined to address Cox’s future over the phone on Tuesday evening, saying that there will be a discussion about the topic after the season, and then an announcement.

And if Cox walks away, baseball will lose a giant, no matter the circumstances. Only three managers have won more games — Connie Mack, John McGraw and Tony La Russa — and Cox has managed in more postseasons (15) than any other manager (Torre has 14 and almost certainly will tie him this offseason).

OK… Frank says they will discuss after the season, and an announcement will be made then. Bobby says an announcement will be made when they return from this road trip.

Does Bobby already know something without said discussion?

My crystal ball says – one more season.

He sees the improvement in their rotation and bullpen and he knows that Wren will go after another bat or two in the off-season. He sees the real possibility of having an honest-to-goodness contending team next year and would like to be part of another title for ATL.

I was kind of expecting that when they started making comments about an “announcement coming soon”. Bobby’s earned the farewell tour.

Agreed, FBG. He has earned it. And as much as we like to nitpick his day to day decision making, the Braves are a .600 team since the additions of Hanson, McLouth and LaRoche and Bobby at the helm.

There are some who will say that they accomplished that in spite of Bobby. I do not subscribe to that theory. I believe it takes everyone from GM down to roster spot #25, including the manager.

In 2010, carrying over a strong rotation, hopefully retaining Rochey and adding (either from inside or outside the organization) a power bat for the OF, there is absolutely no reason to think they won’t be a .600 team for all of 2010.
