89: 2010 Potential Warms Cold Winter Nights

POTENTIAL FOR 2010 WARMS THOSE COLD WINTER NIGHTS

By ssiscribe

ATLANTA — Nothing chills the heart of a baseball fan more than when the first cold front of the offseason blows through town, sending the garden blooms shivering and the good denizens scrambling for that favorite sweater.

And that’s where we stand on this night along the southern rim of the capital city. On the big TV is a big-time doing: the Yankees and Angels battling in the late innings of Game 2 of the American League Championship Series.

For Los Angeles (times two!) and New York and Philadelphia, the here and now sits squarely in focus. Here in Atlanta, and wherever the legions of Braves Nation lay their heads on this chilly October night, 2010 already has arrived, regardless of what the calendar on the wall reports to us.

Winter has arrived, even if we’re told it doesn’t get here until December. It arrived in late September, after a spirited late-season push by the Braves fell a few games short of a miracle ticket to the postseason party.

For all the hub-bub and boost Atlanta’s torrid September surge provided, I couldn’t help but wonder two things:

1.) We don’t deserve to play in October, given how we’d played in April, May and June.

2.) If we hadn’t played the first 74 games of this season six games under .500, I’d be pulling money aside for World Series tickets.

Therein rests the hope as we look ahead to a new season, one that we’re already thinking about and talking about and obsessing about, even as four teams still try to settle the final matters of 2009. What we saw out of the Braves from the moment they were 34-40 to the dying days of September provide plenty of evidence this team is plenty good enough to be plastered on our TV screens — and not just in our consciousness and discussion — come this time next year.

Certainly, there are questions to address, holes to fill. Let’s face it: after a 90-loss season in 2008, the Braves had two offseasons worth of work to do to get this thing straightened out. Give Frank Wren and Co. credit for addressing the most-glaring need first. Not too long after having to rely on Jorge Campillo, Jo-Jo Reyes, James Parr and Buddy Carlyle to fill out a starting rotation, the Braves have a staff that is the envy of the sport.

Heck, they have TOO many starters, if it’s even possible to find oneself in such a scenario.

Now that the rotation is salted away and salved, it’s time to give the lineup the pop it needs to generate enough runs to propel this squad into the playoffs. Moves made along the way, from trading for Nate McLouth to Adam LaRoche’s homecoming to Martin Prado’s ascension to everyday player status, have helped.

Re-sign LaRoche, find one more bat (preferably right-handed in nature), and this team is golden. I really believe that, and no, it’s not the fumes coming from the Hot Stove on this cold winter’s night providing such an intoxicating aroma.

Baseball 2009 is done for me, despite this ALCS contest playing on my TV. Baseball 2010 awaits. Dare I say, with the evidence at my disposal, the Braves have poured a strong foundation.

Add a few bricks to it, and next October will be a lot warmer.

Great stuff as always sscribe. Yes, the winter doldrums have set in early for me too. With the defeat of Va Tech last night by a Jeckle and Hyde like Ga Tech team last night and Denny Hamlin pulling the dirt over himself with his latest mishap at Charlotte last night, My season is pretty much done. Even the once mighty Redskins have become the latest version of the Bengals. Totally inept and clueless…

So I sit in that other Capitol awaiting the arrival of the Flying Squirrels who has a single year left of affiliation with the Giants before the inevitable move to become a farm club for the Nationals…. Sigh…

At least you folks in Atlanta can revel in the resurgence of the Falcons.

Now baseball…. While I learned long ago not to count my chickens too early, it would at least be nice to have a couple of dozens eggs from which to hedge one’s bets upon…. When the nest is empty to begin with, you are pretty much assured of zero hatchlings…

Very well put! It was a bit much to think they could make that big a leap…if the Rockies hand done the prudent thing, and stayed with the same manager all year, we might have still slipped in!

CL, I believe it. Nothing from this administration surprises me anymore. They have long since overstepped the boundary of normal and ordinary, and have made a practice of bully politics, pushing their agenda with no regard for the Constitution, nor for the will of the people. We might as well get used to it; it is the new “normal”.

    Something to think about…

First, this is an interesting comparison of offensive numbers from this past season:

    Adam LaRoche – .277/.355/.488, 25 HR’s, 83 RBI
    Mark DeRosa – .250/.319/.433, 23 HR’s, 78 RBI

Next, Adam LaRoche bats left-handed, and plays 1B exclusively. His ’09 salary was $7.05MM.

Mark DeRosa bats right-handed, and plays 1B, 2B, 3B, LF and RF. His ’09 salary was $5.5MM.

Adam LaRoche is seeking a multi-year deal, and could conceivably block Freddie Freeman.

Mark DeRosa is seeking a multi-year deal, and could conceivably move to 3B upon Chipper’s retirement, opening 1B for Freddie Freeman. Or, could conceivably take 3B now, with Chipper moving across the diamond to 1B. Either way, 3B is covered beyond Chipper, and Freddie Freeman is not blocked.

Neither would be expected to be the cleanup guy, as that should come from the mythical and elusive RH corner outfield bopper. And with DeRosa being RH, it could even open up the bopper search to both RH and LH.

    Picture:
    1- McLouth, CF, (L)
    2- Yunel, SS (R)
    3- Chipper, 3B/1B (S)
    4- mythical bopper, LF (R/L)
    5- McCann, C (L)
    6- DeRosa, 1B/3B (R)
    7- Heyward, RF (L)
    8- Prado, 2B (R)
    9- P

    That’s a dang good lineup.

    Just sayin’…

    Keith Law:

Atlanta Braves reliever Lee Hyde was the team’s fourth-round pick in 2006 out of Georgia Tech, but he’s logged just 97 innings since then due to Tommy John surgery and a shoulder injury. The good news: The stuff and approach he showed on Friday night [AFL] would work in any major-league pen right now. Hyde was 92-94 with a sharp 84-87 mph slider that he needs to show he can bury below the zone. He also flashed a changeup with good tumble. He’s not a big guy and his delivery is compact with good leverage and a lot of deception. Hyde finished strongly at AA this year, and if he’s healthy in March and pitches like this, he should have a legitimate chance to make that club.

I would put Cantu at the top of my wish list….

I also think it is important to consider defense. That is why I think the Braves should re-sign Roachie. That said, I doubt anyone will listen to my suggestions. I already know what Frank Wren thinks of “bloggers”…

    Jorge Cantu: .289/.345/.443, 16 HR’s, 100 RBI

Hit 29 HR’s in ’08, bats right, hit in the cleanup in 145 games for the Phish last season, played 111 games at 1B, 45 at 3B.

27 years old, made $3.5MM in his 1st year of arb in ’09.

Could be a keeper and move to 3B when Chipper retires.

Seems a likely target. Answers both the “righty cleanup” and “1B” questions.

    From Matt Cerrone’s MetsBlog.com:

Earlier today [Tuesday] on WFAN, SI.com’s Jon Heyman said he believes the Mets would like to sign Matt Holliday to play left field next season.

Heyman said he feels the Braves, Giants and Mets will compete for Holliday, though he ‘wouldn’t be shocked to see him go to the Yankees, Red Sox or Cardinals.’

In the end, he believes Holliday will stay in National League.

    😯

Is it really possible that the Atlanta Braves of 2009, owned by Liberty Media, would actually compete on the FA market for the #1 FA, a guy who will likely sign for $18MM/yr or more, and a guy represented by Scott Boras?

    I can’t see it…

    Like

  43. 43 Voice of Raisins October 21, 2009 at 9:13 am

The only way I can see that happening is for one of the high $$$ pitchers to be traded. Lowe, KK, or JV would have to go, and I don’t think they want to trade JV. They would almost certainly have to trade Lowe – a task that will not be easily accomplished.

They’d also have to go cheap everywhere else. Soriano, gone (although I believe he’s gone anyway.) Gonzo, gone. Rochey, gone.

It could mean they address 1B and closer internally.

And here’s something else to consider. N8’s on the books for $4.5MM for 2010. He could be moved to free up some $$$ with a cheaper option playing CF until Schafer returns. If Holliday were to be signed, N8 is the odd man out anyway. We all know Schafer and Heyward are definitely in the near future plans.

That said, if the 2 youngsters could actually live up to their hype, an outfield of JHey, Schafer and Holliday could be tremendous.

This will surely be one an interesting Hot Stove season for our Bravos…

    Like

  44. 44 Voice of Raisins October 21, 2009 at 9:55 am

All that being said, I don’t see a Holliday signing happening. Just don’t. LF is pretty hard to figure out because of N8 and OF prospects that are on the verge of being here. JHey is a given in RF, most likely by mid-season. Nate is under a relatively team friendly contract through 2011, with a team option for 2012. And I don’t think for a second they have any less expectations for Schafer after last season’s showing given the fact that he played with a wrist injury that required surgery. His biggest failing was not reporting the injury sooner. So if you sign a premier FA for LF, he’s gonna get at least 3 years if not 4-5. N8 or Schafer would be out. No way around it.

Gotta be a trade for a short contract.

Same thing goes for 1B. If you sign a premier guy, and Rochey is a premier guy in this year’s crop, you have to go at least 3 years blocking FredFree.

So what do you do? Maybe trade for a LF or 1B with 1-2 years left on his deal? The problem is, if you trade for quality, you have to give up quality. And for just 1-2 years. Tough… tough.

The best match is trading our high $$$ pitcher coming off a disappointing season – Derek Lowe – for someone else’s high $$$ slugger coming off a disappointing season- Magglio Ordonez, maybe? – and hope last year was an aberration. Then you’ve traded salary for salary, and position of excess for position of need. And hope for a rebound. On both sides.

This is why Frank Wren gets paid more than I do.

Wouldn’t it be nice to just go out and stroke a check like the Yankers do? Sabathia, Burnett, Tex, ARod… It’s like going to Kroger to pick up a few items:

Ring… ring… “Hello, Joe? Brian… I’m running to the FA market. Need anything? Wait.. let me make a list. OK, shoot… Uh huh… first baseman… couple of starters… extend ARod… anything else? OK. Back in a bit.” Click…

V, as Mel Brooks said in History of the World, Part 1, it’s good to be King! And that’s what the Yankees are. What’s funny is they didn’t sign folks like Abreu, and did save some money to only spend it on the F.A’s

I Don’t think we can get a 27 Y.O. Cantu for a guy who can’t hit. They trade guys like him, or Uggla, for teams best prospects….

    Like

  46. 46 Voice of Raisins October 21, 2009 at 12:47 pm

From the Phish roster, I’d rather have Cody Ross. He’s due the same salary bump as Cantu, so he could be made available for the right deal. He knocked 24 HR’s to go with 90 RBI. He hit .270/.321/.469, bats right, and plays a very good defensive OF. He’s 29, though, and never batted higher than 5th in the batting order.

That said, Cantu or Ross would give you similar offensive production and cost you about $5MM in salary (which is why the Phish may part with one or both, along with Uggla who’ll probably get $8MM in arb). Either would fill a position of need. The question is, what would one of them cost in return? And would the Phish deal within the division?

    ajc’s Jeff Schultz:

This will be an interesting offseason for Braves general manager Frank Wren. He wants to re-sign pitcher Tim Hudson. But doesn’t know if he can. He wants to trade Derek Lowe or Kenshin Kawakami for a bat. But he doesn’t know if he can, and he has to see how things develop with Hudson first. He wants to re-sign LaRoche. But doesn’t know if he can, and if he can sign Hudson and trade Lowe or Kawakami for a bat then maybe keeping LaRoche becomes less crucial for the everyday lineup. The difference between things going right and things going wrong will be the difference in the Braves playing in October next season or wondering when this post-season drought ends. Either the dominoes fall in sequence or the Labrador runs through the room and knocks everything over. Wren probably was correct when he speculated last winter’s quest to remake the starting rotation caused more stress than this one will. But this off-season tips one way or the other very easily.

“What would you like for supper tonight?” And she tells me.

So, I go into the kitchen, get out all of the ingredients and start cutting, chopping, sauteing, seasoning, cooking, and whatnot for an hour or so.

Prepare her plate so that she can manage everything easily (i.e. – cut up just so, arranged just so, utensils placed just so)

    and……

she takes one look at it and says, “I don’t want this. I told you I wanted (fill in the blank – whatever it was that she didn’t say…)”

That’s when the pot holder usually winds up on top of the refrigerator or somewhere….

from Michael Yon (link under Stuff): The man can write!!

    “17 August 2009
    Sangin, Afghanistan

The roads are so littered with enemy bombs that nearly all transport and resupply to this base occurs by helicopter. The pilots roar through the darkness, swoop into small bases nestled in the saddle of enemy territory, and quickly rumble off into the night.

A witness must spend only a short time in the darkness to know we are at war. Flares arc into the night, or mortar illumination rounds drift and swing under parachutes, orange and eerily in the distance, casting long, flickering but sharply defined shadows. The worst that can happen is that you will be caught in an open field, covered by nothing and concealed only by darkness, when the illumination suddenly bathes you in light. Best is to stay low and freeze and prepare to fire, or in the case of a writer, to stay low and freeze and prepare to watch the firing.

Explosions from unknown causes rumble through the cool nights while above drifts the Milky Way, punctuated by more shooting stars than one can remember. The Afghanistan nights will grant a wish to wish upon a shooting star. And while waiting for the next meteor, the eyes are likely to catch tracer bullets.”

Wow. And you oughta check out some of the stunning photos he has taken while with our troops in both Iraq and Afghanistan. I’ve been a supporter of his for a long time.

    More from Michael Yon:
“Corporal Benjamin Kopp was shot and evacuated to Germany, then back to the United States, where he died just over a week later on 18 July. Benjamin was 21 years old and at the very tip of the spear. If not for such men, we would be at the mercy of every demon.

Benjamin Kopp and his comrades were delivering the latest bad news to the sort of people who harbored the terrorists who attack innocent people around the world every day, and who attacked us at home on 9/11. Ranger Kopp was a veteran with three combat tours. He knew the risks, yet continued to fight.”

There are some incredible photos taken on a patrol where the CO is shot in the leg (snapped the femur in two), shot again in the leg and shot in one arm.

He continued to direct the firefight and returning fire. He was out in the open where no one could go to pull him to safety.

Two news guys on the patrol froze. Michael grabs a weapon, loads it and – well, read and see it for yourself. It’s amazing.

His reports should be required reading for every American.

Mr. O’Brien’s report on last week’s Braves organizational meetings:

[Frank] Wren and his top assistants were there, with the Braves’ seven major league scouts and, of course, manager Bobby Cox, presumably the last organizational meetings he’ll attend as manager (he’s announced he’s retiring as manager after next season, as you know).

“It’s not just talking in the meeting room [during the four days],” Wren said. “Sometimes it’s at dinner, or breakfast, or while we’re watching instructional league games. Guys kick ideas around. It’s really just four-day brainstorming session of how we might put the team together…

“It went very well. We got everything accomplished that we wanted to, as far as talking through every situation, the free agents and how they would fit on our club. We’re prepared, once the free-agent period begins, to start making our calls and getting in the mix for guys we’re interested in.”

Ssscribe…nicely done, as per usual. Thanks!

    Salty’s predictions…
    1. LaRoche is signed – Freeman is a year away…and in year two, he can provide bench pop and learn further from Adam. Don’t dismiss Adam’s D…it saves extra pitches for the staff. If Freeman progresses faster, Adam can be dealt in year two with an affordable contract for the acquiring team.
    2. Heyward will be with the team…perhaps even Schafer, and naturally McLouth. That’s an OF with pop and speed. Church and Diaz provide added depth and a bat, meaning Schafer could be a LF…or McClouth plays CF when Diaz is in.
    3. Hudson stays…Soriano is sayonara…Gonzo’s back…Kenshin stays…Lowe, I have no idea. But…don’t be surprised if any trade with Lowe happens just prior or during spring training when other teams transition from the ‘Braves are desperate to move Lowe’ to ‘we need a starter…NOW!’
    4. I like Cody Ross…too…and would be happy simply to see him not beat up on the Braves.

The whole Lowe/Milwaukee connection intrigues me. I have only read that mentioned once, but it has caused me to do a little research on the Brewers and their offseason plans. It truly looks as though they are completely focused on acquiring 2 starters, very similar to Frank’s plan last year, and have all but promised new pitching coach Rick Peterson that he’ll have them. I can absolutely see where Lowe and his groundball tendencies would be desirable in Miller Park, as would his veteran presence.

    Here’s where I see a snag…

1st, I don’t necessarily see a trade match. We don’t want Corey Hart, and don’t need JJ Hardy. They aren’t trading Prince Fielder or Ryan Braun. They have an interesting prospect in Mat Gamel, who could play either corner IF position, but he is like every other prospect in that he is unproven. Additionally, he is apparently not able to displace unknown incumbent 3B Casey McGahee. They also don’t have bullpen depth to help us there, so a match is difficult to find.

2nd, they are going to have to address the major issue of paying Prince Fielder a boatload of $$$ after this season. Taking on Lowe’s hefty contract won’t necessarily facilitate that.

But he would sure make a nice start to fixing their rotation woes, so who knows…

    Mat Gamel, 24, bats L, plays 3B/1B.

    .246/.340/.431, 5 HR’s, 20 RBI in 61 games. (Projects to 14/54 over 162 games)

Ranked #23 overall prospect by MLB.com. From their assessment:

Statistically speaking: While it was impressive that Gamel led the Southern League in RBIs, total bases and extra-base hits, he also finished second in average, fourth in OPS and fifth in slugging. It seems even more impressive when considering he played the last two months with a bad elbow and he hit .243 in July and .205 in August.

Scouting report: A terrific pure hitter from the left side, Gamel has better than average power and pop to all fields. His defense lags behind the bat — as his error totals indicate — though he has improved. Most of the miscues were of the throwing variety.

Upside potential: If he can improve defensively, a terrific everyday third baseman who can hit in the middle of a lineup. His bat will play at other positions, too.

    Good info!

Again, from Michael Yon: (the man is a poet with words) –
“This war is just beginning. Great war is in the air. The feeling is as conspicuous and distinct as the smell of rain, or that morning every year when the first chill of winter tickles the senses. The corn will soon be harvested. The fields will become brown and fallow. The snows will come and blow across barren lands, and next Spring the war will be worse than ever before. It will grow higher than the corn.

Still under the Milky Way, at the tiny and remote ANA compound, some of the British soldiers seemed to be sleeping. Everyone wore boots in case of attack. Occasionally a 2 Para soldier would emerge from the darkness for a guard shift. The ambush they had prepared for the Taliban lay quiet. The dogs had stopped barking hours ago.

Slowly the stars crept through the sky. Hours melted by and constellations seemed to drift through space as the Earth turned below.”

V, I just don’t think we can wrest Mat Gamel from the Brewers. Not for an old starter who wasn’t very good last year. I kept hearing them talking about needing to keep prospects, what with them being a “small” market team. They draw 3+ million, but small market. read…cheap.

They have to think long and hard about Prince Fielder. No one knows how long he will hold up in the field. And he’s going to demand a lot of moola. They may very well trade him, and will ask for and get a lot. Do we have enough pieces to get him???? Could we afford him if we traded Lowe and didn’t re-sign Hudson and Soriano?????

As I sit on what has thus far been a lazy Saturday morning, but is going to become very hectic within the hour, I had a very “out of the box” thought…

Obviously the Braves are seeking a RH power bat to plug into the cleanup spot. Those are few and far between. Nelson Cruz has been mentioned many times as that bat, but the question has been what would Texas want in return? Surely the price, if they were to actually trade him, would be pretty steep.

Not to mention, Cruz is pretty young, and wouldn’t just be holding a spot for a year or so. What does that mean? That means Cruz + Jhey + N8 + Schafer = 4 outfielders.

Follow me here… Texas is likely to lose CF Marlon Byrd to FA. (Byrd isn’t a bad hitter himself, but his numbers outside of Arlington were just OK.) Could the inclusion of say, maybe, N8 make a trade possible? An OF of Cruz in LF, Schafer in CF and JHey in RF would be pretty darn good. And Cruz would still be affordable enough to allow you to re-sign LaRoche back at 1B.

Cruz would likely cost you N8, Medlen or KK, Jojo Reyes and a prospect. Is it worth it?

The issue is, JHey and Schafer are both on the way. JHey most likely by mid-season, and Schafer at least by 2011, if not sometime in 2010. So how do you acquire an impact guy and still make room in the appropriate time? Short contract veterans such as Magglio Ordonez or Jermaine Dye are still going to cost a bounty in return, with only short term return, not to mention their health and production concerns. Wouldn’t it make sense to get a younger guy if you have to give up alot in trade?

Man, Frank has a difficult job…

Been doing a little more reading before I exit this thing and go about my day…

I think Nelson Cruz has the potential to be a solid power bat for many years. He also plays very good defense. Did I mention he’s still a year away from arb?

An outfield of Cruz/Schafer/JHey could be very good for a number of years.

Texas would want, at minimum, a veteran starter, a LEFTY reliever, a righty veteran bat and a prospect.

Would you give up KK, O’Flaherty, Diaz and JoJo Reyes for him?

I would, but I’m afraid even that might not be enough.

    But just imagine:

    N8
    Prado
    Chipper
    Cruz
    Mac
    JHey
    Esco
    Rochey

    Then in 2 years:

    Schafer
    Prado
    JHey
    Cruz
    Mac
    Freeman
    Esco
    mystery 3B acquired for N8

    Pretty young and solid.

    Just sayin’…

Is anyone else bothered by Mark McGwire’s return to Major League Baseball? Is it just me? Am I wrong?

It’s one thing that he was one of many, many, many drug abusers in the game during his time, but his shameless performance in front of Congress will always stick in my mind.

So Andro was not on the banned list when he used it. Does that make it right? So he never tested positive for other steroids he was named to be using. Of course, MLB didn’t have testing during his career either. Does that exonerate him? (You know, Jose Canseco was called alot of things when he started naming names, but all of his “predictions” have come to pass. You think he might have been telling the truth?)

To me, Mark McGwire is the poster child for the t-shirt that says, “It ain’t illegal if you don’t get caught.”

He’s also an icon for the steroid era.

It should be surprising that MLB has given the green light on this, but given that Bud Selig is the Commissioner, I guess it really isn’t. Bud is and idiot.

Now Tony LaRussa is bringing Big Mac in as his hitting coach. Big Mac, whose career batting average is .263. Stellar. He only hit over .300 for the season three times – once in only 89 games played, once in only 27. But he’s gonna teach hitting. That’s like asking Ozzy Ozbourne to teach opera. When was he ever asked to hit and run? When was he ever asked to sacrifice? How about just hit it to the right side and move the runner over? He knew one thing and one thing only. Swing for the fences. What is he going to teach Brendan Ryan and Skip Shumaker? Swing hard in case you hit it?

All that aside, I don’t think he should be back in a game that still has the rotten smell of the after effects of the steroid era lingering in the room. (After effects, you say? How about broken down pitchers who suddenly cannot stay healthy, or former all-star veteran hitters who have seemingly “forgotten” how to hit?)

I never really liked Tony LaRussa that much; now I really don’t.

It’s just wrong. At least it is to me…

But, he wasn’t a scummy guy like Canseco….Gammons used to bash him all the time while he was still playing, didn’t understand it til much later-Loved to watch Canseco swing, that homer in Toronto that was in the upper, upper deck…man..didn’t know it was steroid enhanced.
Remember how Sosa came back after a year??? Afer all of the sudden not being able to speaka da inglish, in front of congress???
Giambi, and Sheffield still play, and we all know what they did.

You are right though, he will probably suck as a hitting coach.

No respect for Sosa, Mac, Palmeiro… all had a chance to come clean, all failed miserably.

As for Canseco being scummy… why? because he dropped a dime on everybody else? He was the one guy that took the fall for all of the abusers. He missed out on the absurd idol worship and more absurd contracts of guys like Mac and Sosa. In the end, he was the one guy that told the truth. High character guy? Maybe not so much. But he’s no more “scummy” than any of the other cheaters in the game.

He is a stand up guy who made a mistake and owned up to it. He is evidence that people can make a mistake and still show character.

Now.. onto more pleasant topics, like speculating about the Braves off-season moves.

Is anyone else a little surprised that the Huddy negotiations started last week and are continuing this week? The Braves have until 5 days after the completion of the WS (which at MLB’s slow pace, could be after the winter meetings!) and Huddy has another several days to reply. To begin the process now indicates to me a certain sense of purpose.

It isn’t too difficult to extrapolate (FOB?) that signing Huddy and defining both dollars and years sets in motion the rest of Frank’s “to do” list. Without that signing, there is no surplus of starters. The blurbs I have read over the last week or so indicate that Frank has already been on the phones, and has determined that there is genuine interest in both Lowe and Kawakami. That doesn’t mean that working out any deal with any team is either imminent or easy, but it does at least give him an idea of which paths to pursue.

It also helps better determine what his payroll might be, not just for 2010, but for ’11 and ’12 as well. So he has some idea what he may be able to offer Rochey during their exclusive negotiating period. By my smalltown math calculations, a reduced Huddy contract for 3 more years, minus the remaining 3 years on Lowe’s contract might just equal a 3 year offer to Rochey. Or at least relatively close. (Lowe’s $15MM – Huddy’s $9MM = $6MM. Of course, Adam will probably get $7MM or $8MM annually, but you were already gonna pay SOMETHING, right?)

So by that logic, the $$$ he may spend on 1B might not affect his pursuit of the mythical RH bopper for LF.

Of course, this is all just pure speculation, but it is kinda fun to talk about… 😀

My observation has been it’s only cheating when the other guy does it…. At least that is the sense I get from San Francisco and LA…

Live or Memorex, that will be a question that will surround every single player in the last 20 years or so. Would not be surprised if it extended well before that.

Yes, Huddy might be the lynch pin for the Braves this year as far as who will be available for trade and how much money is in the till. I would take Hudson over either Lowe or Kawakami any day of the week.

I don’t think it will hurt Freddie Freeman one bit to play in AAA for a couple of more years. One rookie on the team at a time… Heyward, Schafer and Freeman all at once would not be a line-up that would evoke fear but then, the guys we fielded this year didn’t exactly make the other team quake in their shoes either.

I don’t control the purse stings but if it were my team, I would resign LaRoache and let 2011 take care of itself. My guess is there will be a big turnover anyway when Bobby leaves or the team is sold.

I would hope that Lowe could ‘bounce back’ from whatever-it-was and have a year of which he is perfectly capable of having. I have never liked KK from day 1. Hey CL, Happy Birthday! Late, but happy.

CL, I’ve been all around here and there… mostly there. Just lots goin’ on, that’s all. Always amongst ya, even when I ain’t physically (or blogally) amongst.

I’m torn on the WS. On one hand, ya always wanna pull for the team that plays against the richest team in the world. On the other, I’d like to see Jeter, Pettitte, Rivera and Damon get another. It’d be good to see Tex get one too.

On the other hand, it would be nice to see Lidge and Utley get another… and Bako too.

Yet on the other hand (is that three?), I’d rather not see A-Roid get a ring at all. On the other (four?), I really never cared for Pedro “who’s yer daddy”.

I’m leanin’ towards the Yanks, because of Pettitte (good guy, one of my favorite warriors) and Rivera (the best all-time closer and consummate pro). But how can anybody root for the Yanks? Well, as you can see, I’m torn.

I’m hoping the best team wins and let them sort it out themselves.

    Mark Bowman:

Like Jimmy Buffett, come Monday, [Jason] Heyward is hoping that he will be alright. The highly-regarded outfielder has been dealing with a strained gluteus muscle that has prevented him from playing in the Arizona Fall League since Oct. 17.

The Braves remain hopeful that Heyward is simply dealing with a minor injury that will allow him to resume playing with the Peoria Saguaros within the next couple of days.

There doesn’t seem to be much reason to believe that Heyward is dealing with a significant injury. But the lost playing time certainly lessens the development that would benefit him if the Braves do decide to have him start the 2010 season as their starting right fielder.

I’ve written that it doesn’t seem logical to believe that Heyward could start next year in the Majors. But as time passes, there’s growing reason to believe that the Braves are certainly open to this possibility.

A more concerning development from the AFL stems from the early struggles encountered by Freddie Freeman. Before recording a pair of hits in five at-bats (through eight innings) on Friday, the 20-year-old first baseman had gone 1-for-19 with nine strikeouts. ***According to Jeff Lyman’s blog, many of Freeman’s contact outs have been line drives right at people.

    More Bowman:

Now back to [Tim] Hudson. My guess is that the two parties could reach an agreement within the next week. My guess is that the 34-year-old right-hander will agree to a three-year extension worth approximately $27 million and also gain an option for the 2013 season.

If the deal with Hudson is secured, we’ll likely start hearing more about the possibility of moving either Derek Lowe or Kenshin Kawakami.

Canseco didn’t give a blank about the game, he just wanted to make some money, and get another chance at some fame. He got both. He’s a snitch in my book.

I still think he is scum…and he was once my favorite player back in the day. Speed and power. But all drug induced.

And as sad is the Steroid/HGH use is, most of the players did it when it wasn’t against baseball’s rules.

    Why not hire Mark McGwire?
    Bernie Miklasz
    Sports Columnist Bernie Miklasz
    [More columns]
    By Bernie Miklasz
    ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
    10/27/2009

Mark McGwire is the Cardinals’ new batting coach, and if you’ve come to this space looking for moral outrage over his hiring, then you’ve gotten off at the wrong bus stop.

Perhaps I’ve become too jaded by the standards on display in professional sports. A Rams player who killed a woman while driving drunk has played a dozen years in the NFL. The Philadelphia Eagles signed an ex-con quarterback who tortured and murdered innocent animals.

The New York Yankees won the American League pennant with considerable assistance from Alex Rodriguez (steroids) and Andy Pettitte (HGH) and I don’t see anyone storming the gates of Yankee Stadium, demanding their removal from the World Series roster. I was in Los Angeles for the NLDS, and Manny Ramirez was still batting fourth in the lineup, and the Dodgers still had their “Mannywood” sign in left field.

There are so many rogues, rascals and rapscallions earning paychecks while playing or coaching games, I simply cannot have a tantrum over McGwire’s new career opportunity. Moreover, I don’t believe most fans care about steroids. There’s no sign that they do, no evidence that they’ve stayed away in protest or disgust. Baseball attendance dropped slightly this year because of the economy, but the industry’s growth over the last 10, 12 years has been remarkable.

This is the entertainment business — the key word being “business.” It isn’t the monastery or a Boy Scout meeting. McGwire is going to roll some videotape and have meetings with hitters and suggest a better way to get base hits off Ted Lilly. McGwire wasn’t hired to be the team chaplain, or life coach or to serve as the role model for the children of St. Louis. He’s going to offer proverbs such as “keep your front shoulder in” and “keep your hands back.” Really deep stuff, there.

McGwire has never been charged with a crime. He’s never been convicted of a crime. He hasn’t been banned by Major League Baseball. He’s eligible to be hired. And the man who runs the sport, MLB Commissioner Bud Selig, celebrates McGwire to this day.

And if you want to disqualify McGwire from working at a batting cage because he almost certainly used steroids in a playing career that ended in 2001, or because he made a fool of himself in testimony before Congress, that’s fine.

But if we outlaw McGwire, we’d better take a pen and cross out hundreds of names of players who competed during the Steroids Era. They can’t work, either. Same with the managers, coaches, general managers, owners and commissioners who looked the other way while bulked-up players went on juicing binges to power up the competition and the box office. Good luck putting together 30 teams.

All of that said, the McGwire hiring is problematic for other reasons.

I don’t believe he knows what he’s getting into.

I don’t believe the Cardinals realize what they’re in for.

I don’t understand why McGwire has decided to leave a peaceful, secluded life to open himself up to greater scrutiny.

The Cardinals need to increase their onbase percentage by taking more walks, but why walk into a controversy?

The hiring of McGwire only reinforces the perception that this is a steroids-friendly franchise. They’ve employed players who have flunked baseball’s official steroids test (Ryan Franklin, Ron Villone). They’ve employed players implicated in performance-enhancing scandals (Troy Glaus, Rick Ankiel).

How about ol’ Jordan Schafer??? Granted, he was accused of this in minor league baseball, but I think if he was truly innocent, he would have fought tooth and nail to clear his name. Just like with the other players that say, the union said…well, it’s your very career on the line, you will forever be tarnished as a guy that took performance enhancing drugs. If you were not guilty, would you take a 50 game suspension???? I’d do everything possible to prove my innocence. If I was innocent….

Ber… first, the visual you provided is, well… 😯

Anyway, there is a difference, in my opinion.

By all means, Canseco intended to make a buck off of his book (a book, by the way, that contained the truth.) He had lost his ability to make a living from baseball after being the ONE guy to take the fall for everyone else. The rest continued to make mega-bucks off of the result of their illegal actions. Some have admitted it, like Pettitte and Tejada. Some continue to lie and evade, like Sosa, Palmeiro and McGwire.

You said, “And as sad is the Steroid/HGH use is, most of the players did it when it wasn’t against baseball’s rules.”

While that may be technically true, it was illegal. It was against the law. And I think maybe being illegal trumps “wasn’t against baseball’s rules”. Again, just my opinion.

As to the Jordan Schafer issue. I’ll make 2 points.

First, he wasn’t suspended for being caught using HGH. He was suspended after a MLB investigation concluded that he “committed a HGH-related infraction” that was as much due to the company he kept as to his own direct actions.

Second, Schafer owned up to the infraction and met it head on. He never hid, he never skulked away, he never evaded questions. In fact, he apologized to his team and to his fans and said, “So I was taking responsibility for what I did — and I was wrong for being around that. I should’ve never gotten around the situation. I never took a steroid or anything to make me better. But at the same time, I knew what was going on and I hung around those people and I didn’t say anything.” Admission of guilt, and responsibility taken.

The kid took responsibility. The adult Mac never has, and in my estimation, he never will. If and when he does, my tune will change.

Now, on to the writers who want to give him a pass.

I have seen that one, and others including some award winning national writers who take the same stance.

I say they are all wrong. They are another symptom of a degrading society that wants to write off a wrong by saying, “it was a log time ago” or “we have moved past that” or “everybody else did it” or “they never proved it” or “they didn’t hurt anybody”. Sounds like some of the things I told my Mom when I was 8 years old.

Wrong is wrong. Period. Those who bury their heads in the sand make it no more less wrong. Until Mac acts like a responsible adult and owns up to his actions, he deserves no pass. Those who condone it do not either. The Cards have taken a step down in my book. I am not so much surprised that LaRussa is involved in it, but I am still surprised that the Cards brass approved it.

And heck, Mac still hides. He wasn’t even at his own press conference. The Cards have bitten off an awful large chunk of something. I wonder if they’ll endure the taste or spit it out?

Shortly before Thanksgiving, Schumaker will begin working with McGwire in Orange County, Calif., three days a week. Ryan will drive in from Los Angeles twice a week for instruction. Heyward will not return to AFL

After meeting with Braves doctors in Atlanta on Tuesday, Jason Heyward learned that he won’t be able to resume playing in this year’s Arizona Fall League.

Heyward played just four games in the AFL before being shut down on Oct. 17 because of discomfort in the region where his hamstring meets his gluteal muscles.

According to an industry source, the Braves doctors have projected that Heyward should return to health after a few weeks of rest and rehab. With the AFL’s regular season concluding on Nov. 17, there wasn’t any reason for the 20-year-old outfielder to rush back to action.

Because the Braves are still thinking about having Heyward begin the 2010 season as one of their starting outfielders, there’s a chance that he could be sent to Winter League to further his development heading into Spring Training.

When asked about this possibility on Monday night, Braves general manager Frank Wren said that he first wanted to get the diagnosis from the club’s doctors. — Mark Bowman

Rosenthal’s reporting that it’ll get signed by the end of the week. But then again, he often talks out of his… suffice to say he often overstates for readership.

He also says that “Hudson initially leaned toward going out on the open market”, something Hudson has denied several times.

And he says “The re-signing of Hudson could lead the Braves to trade another of their starting pitchers — most likely right-hander Javier Vazquez or right-hander Derek Lowe — for a hitter.”

Frank is not trading JV, and has as much as said so. Where does Rosey get his information, anyway?

Oh by the way, reading some of the conjecture on Bowman’s blog, man, are there some weak comments or what. Cannot anyone over there figure out that pitching is a rarer and more valuable commodity than hitting? Big contract not withstanding, D Lowe will bring a good price. Actually, so would any of the Braves starting staff.

  172. 183 Voice of Raisins October 29, 2009 at 8:24 am

Yep, Gil… so many are quick to dismiss the recipe for winning 14 straight division titles, which was “pitching and defense”. Of course, hitters like Justice, McGriff, Gallaraga and Chipper didn’t hurt anything, either.

Derek Lowe is the first to admit that he had a mechanical flaw in his delivery that not only affected his ball movement, but also tipped his pitches. (He says he was flying open, allowing hitters to see the ball, which is why they were able to square up on pitches.) That’s one of the things many people forget about Lowe – he is an extremely hard worker. First to arrive in workouts, last to leave. During this past spring training, I heard the local sports radio guys interviewing Tommy Hanson one morning. They asked him why he was at the park so early. He pointed to Lowe running the stadium steps and said, “I’m not early, Derek’s early. He’s already worked up a sweat. I gotta get going.” And once the season ended, Lowe spent numerous hours watching video of his starts analyzing his mechanical problems. To me, that not only makes him a valuable performer, but maybe an even more valuable veteran leader.

Sure I’d like to shed the $15MM contract, but I truly expect him to have a rebound next season and put together a very good year. And what better place than in Atlanta?

Realistically, he won’t be traded without the Braves eating a portion of the contract. Once you do that, you severely lessen the salary relief you’d realize from the trade anyway. So why do it?

IMO, I believe if and when a trade is made, it’ll be KK. He is the most likely match for what will be available. The mythical elite RH bopping LF isn’t out there for trade, folks. If he is available, it’s because his offense is declining, he can’t play defense anymore, or he has an albatross of a contract himself. He isn’t of the elite ilk. Nelson Cruz? Nice dream, but why would any team trade a young building block for anything less than a king’s ransom?

I read all of the trade “proposals” across the street. I see all of the names that are thrown out as good matches to join the Braves. The problem is, most of them do not take into account the other team. Why would the Yanks trade Nick Swisher? Why would Texas trade Cruz? Why would any team trade an elite hitter?

No… our best hope in trade is a guy like Jermaine Dye, who suddenly doesn’t have a position anymore, or a guy like Corey Hart, who hasn’t repeated that one good season. And you don’t trade Derek Lowe for that guy. You might trade KK for him, though.

  173. 184 Voice of Raisins October 29, 2009 at 8:32 am

Here’s another odd part of the whole thing… you’re talking about our #4 or #5 starter.

Again IMO, 1-3 in no particular order is JV, TommyH and JJ, with Huddy coming in at 4 ahead of KK and Lowe. Any improvement from Lowe only makes him your #4 guy at best.

Amazing to think that we could have Derek Lowe and Tim Hudson as the back end of the rotation.

Could we get 15 from wins from each of our starters? It’s certainly conceivable if Lowe remains…

Tim Dierkes is a pretty sharp guy; it’ll be interesting to see his take on the Braves hot stove prospects.

I know from other things I’ve read from him that he does NOT expect the Braves to bring back LaRoche. He also looks at guys like Josh Willingham, Jorge Cantu and Jake Fox as possible RH hitters.

AP: Stimulus jobs created overstated by thousands

    By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON – An early progress report on President Barack Obama’s economic recovery plan overstates by thousands the number of jobs created or saved through the stimulus program, a mistake that White House officials promise will be corrected in future reports.

The government’s first accounting of jobs tied to the $787 billion stimulus program claimed more than 30,000 positions paid for with recovery money. But that figure is overstated by least 5,000 jobs, according to an Associated Press review of a sample of stimulus contracts.

The AP review found some counts were more than 10 times as high as the actual number of jobs; some jobs credited to the stimulus program were counted two and sometimes more than four times; and other jobs were credited to stimulus spending when none was produced.

Big surprise here. This administration is a propaganda machine. They operate under the philosophy that perception becomes truth if it is repeated enough times. This is just the tip of the iceberg, folks…

I’ll cut him a tad of slack on this one; it’s singularly the most sobering thing he can do when deciding a course of action. Every one of those soldiers’ families wants to know the cause is just, and that takes two forms:
1.) These are amongst the last soldiers to sacrifice for an unworthy cause or
2.) No soldier will sacrifice without the US bringing its full capabilities to bear; i.e., in Gil’s words, you either fight to win, without prejudice, or you don’t fight at all.

    from email:

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog’s owners, Ron, his wife, Lisa, and their little boy, Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle.

I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we
couldn’t do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia
procedure for the old dog in their home.

As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though
Shane might learn something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker’s family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.

The little boy seemed to accept Belker’s transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker’s death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, “I know why.”

Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I’d never heard a more comforting explanation.

He said, “People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life — like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?” The six-year-old continued, “Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don’t have to stay as long.”

Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn things like:

When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.

Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.

Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure
    Ecstasy.

    Take naps.

    Stretch before rising.

    Run, romp, and play daily.

Thrive on attention and let people touch you.

Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.

On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass.

On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.

When you’re happy, dance around and wag your entire body.

Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.

    Be loyal.

Never pretend to be something you’re not.

If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.

When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by and nuzzle them gently.

Why is Mike Cameron’s name never brought up as a possible FA acquisition?

I know he’s 37, but he knocked 24 HR’s and drove in 70 in Milwaukee last season. He bats RH, and is still one of the best CF’s around. And he still steals bases. He might could teach a few of our youngsters how that’s done. N8 could move to LF, where he’ll be when Schafer arrives anyway.

And he’s a great clubhouse guy and would fit in very well with a Bobby Cox run team.

Being a FA (type B, I think), he would cost nothing more than 1 draft pick.

He’s from LaGrange, GA and might not mind winding down his career close to home. He could likely be had on a 1 year deal for around $8MM or so.

Imagine if we had gotten Cameron’s numbers out of GA last year. There’s a little perspective, huh?

If you could get him for $7-8MM, and resign Adam for about the same, you get a tandem 40+ HR’s and 140+ RBI and fill your OF and 1B needs.

And let’s be realistic… you ain’t gonna get a 40 HR bopper in this year’s FA or trade markets. Guys like Jermaine Dye might give you a few more HR’s and RBI, but they’ll kill you defensively.

Greetings all, Salty, remind your young lad it’s nothing personal, it is all designed to see if you can withstand the stress… The idea of obeying an order without question is pretty important when you are under fire and most commanders don’t have time to explain their actions, no matter how inane they are at the time. There is a method to their madness.

As for Obama’s photo op, I am offended too. If he really wants to show his support, he will either get the troops out of harms way or give them what they need. At least dubya had the decency to not use visits with the wounded as photo ops. In fact he was pretty adamant about the press not being present.

I also believe it is a breech of protocol to salute while not in a uniform. At least beyond the hand over the heart salute. But hey, I won’t make a bid deal out of it when there are so many other more important issues to be addressed.

    Now baseball…. Yep, Raisins said….

I’ll bet there are some pretty good undiscovered talent that folks will be clamoring about next season, (they don’t know who yet) wondering why the Braves don’t have them or didn’t make a trade for them. Like the man said, keep your nose in your own bag…. It is why a good scouting department is so important….

    Important part of this analysis:

The Braves have about $81MM committed before arbitration raises to Johnson, Diaz, Church, Moylan, and Logan. Johnson and Logan are potential trade/non-tender candidates. Regardless, the Braves should fall under $90MM (and that includes an estimated $9MM for Hudson). According to Cot’s Baseball Contracts, the Braves began 2009 with a $96.7MM payroll. Ultimately I can see Braves GM Frank Wren having close to $15MM to spend without raising payroll.

    According to Mark Bowman:

GM Frank Wren, Bobby Cox and some of the club’s other execs are currently holding meeting in Sea Island…

One can only assume, then, that the Hudson matter is done, and that they are merely waiting for the completion of the WS to make the announcement. Could this little pow-wow be a strategy session to determine the next course of action now that Huddy’s status is resolved?

All…appreciate the sentiments for the ‘young soldier’…am proud of him, too. Makes you feel you’ve done something right as a parent! And Gil, yes, he knows it’s not personal whatsoever…not that the thought doesn’t creep into the mind when you’re on a diet of 4-hour/night sleep sessions. Part of creating the new mold, I suppose.

VaTech…that’s a stunner…didn’t expect that. Being a Clemson fan, I really appreciate a good field entry and am much into the ‘running down the hill’. That said, if a football player isn’t ready to play after the ‘Enter Sandman’ frenzy the crowd feasts on prior to the team hitting the field, they have no pulse! Pirates Demand $7M, Cast Themselves as Environmental Protectors
    Saturday, October 31, 2009

    Times of London

MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somali pirates who are demanding $7 million in ransom for a British sailing couple said Saturday that boats from other countries are plundering Somalia’s fish-rich waters.

Ahmed Gadaf, who described himself as a spokesman for the pirates, said Western fishing vessels “harass” local fishermen and destroy their nets. Gadaf spoke to The Associated Press by satellite phone.
    *****************************************************************

So – this 38′ boat sailing in international waters damaged their ‘environment’ how? And the $7m ransom is for what? and goes to who?

They might wanta try Plan B.

Ten million guesses and you’d never guess what I have in my hand.

A baseball – with some writing on it – that says –

Greg Maddux, Jeff Blauser, Tom Glavine, Chipper Jones, Keith Lockhart, Mark Lemke, Ken Lofton, Bob Cox, Rafael Belliard, Ryan Klesko, Denny Nagle, Fred McGriff, John Smoltz, Mark Wohlers, Mike (can’t read), Andres Gallarhga (I think), and some others that are simply unreadable.

Found it sitting on my desk when I returned from errands earlier. Saw it sitting there but didn’t pay it any mind – got baseballs all over the place. From my brother for a BELATED birthday “I’m-sorry-I-forgot-but-happy-birthday-anyway” present.

I’ve got to look up this team and see if I can make out any other signatures….

I’m thinking this thing may be ‘stamped.’ One signature looks a little too perfect, to me. There is an almost-microscopic circular emblem that IS stamped on it that says ‘National League Championship Series 1997 and has the MLB ‘batter’ in the center.

Brother paid $5 for it at a yard sale, sold by an old lady. Before selling it, she called her daughter and wanted to know if $5 was OK.

Now. Do either one of them know anything about it?? No. Is the daughter by chance going through a divorce or something?

Intriguing, anyway. It’s interesting just to see all the names. Some I had completely forgotten.

I LOVED the homer by Chase that made it 4-3, then the Pedro Feliz homer off of Joba that tied the game, after Joba looked absolutely unhittable.

And Lidge looked great for a moment there. Jeter looked overmatched. But, the Yankees have too many weapons. Sigh…NL can’t win the All star game. Yankees will win at least one of the next 3 games. I will continue to hear, the NL is a AAAA league. No, the Yankees are a team with a huge budget, far more than anyone else has, and they are playing up to that potential.

According to Melissa Segura of SI.com:

Add one more team to an already long list of suitors for Cuban lefthander Aroldis Chapman. The Atlanta Braves are the latest team seeking to meet with Chapman’s agent, two sources told SI.com.

Though an exact date, time and location for a meeting have not been established, the two sides are expected to schedule formal conversations in the coming weeks.

However, according to Frank Wren via Mark Bowman:

Contrary to an SI.com report, the Braves are not currently in the mix for the 21-year-old left-handed pitcher.

“We don’t have any plans to meet with him at this time,” Wren said via an email response on Monday night.

I’ll believe Frank. I think he has more of an inside track on Braves information than some unknown reporter named after a cactus…

    More Bowman:

With the strong possibility that Adam LaRoche, Mike Gonzalez and Rafael Soriano could all be lost via free agency, the Braves are currently in search of a first baseman and a closer. There’s also a chance that they’ll pursue an outfielder to guard against the possibility that they won’t deem Jason Heyward to be Major League-ready coming out of Spring Training next year.

Assuming that Gonzalez and Soriano will get better offers to close elsewhere, the Braves are expected to continue to gauge the cost of signing veteran closer Billy Wagner, who posted a 1.72 ERA in the 17 appearances that he made after returning from Tommy John elbow reconstruction surgery in late August.

    Like

  235. 247 Voice of Raisins November 3, 2009 at 8:41 am

    Last Bowman:

While there’s a chance that the market could put LaRoche in position where he could return to Atlanta with the one-year offer the Braves may be willing to provide, there seems to be a greater likelihood that the Braves will be finding next year’s first baseman via trade, free agency or the expanded list of non-tendered players that are expected to be available this year.

I have to say, my gut tells me Adam won’t be back. With this year’s relatively thin 1B market, and given his very strong finish to 2009, he’ll get at least 2 if not 3 years guaranteed from somebody. (Mets?) I don’t think the Braves will go more than 1 year guaranteed with anybody. I just don’t. Not at the kind of $$$ Adam will command. And FreddieFree’s surge in the AFL isn’t doing anything to change my mind.

Think Russell Branyan… that’s more likely. His 2nd half back injury will keep any team from offering him more than 1 year, and he popped 31 HR’s even with the injury. I foresee a 1 year deal at about $4-5MM with an option for 2011. Less $$$ and less years than Adam will command. Maybe more pop, and a strong first half, too.

I still have a problem with bringing in Freeman and Heyward in tandem. You are just asking for trouble having two rookies starting at the same time. It is what you do when you are building for the future, not what you do when you are contending for the title. Has everyone given up on Schafer? Don’t hear too much clamoring for him anymore. I just think folks forget about how young some of these guys are. Mistakes made in the minors are often not repeated in the majors…

Things like throwing to the wrong base, missing the cut-off man and being caught off base don’t happen to seasoned veterans. It is one of the reasons the Pirates are perennial losers. They don’t keep a team together long enough to gel.

Gil, they won’t all arrive at the same time.

JHey will arrive in 2010 and FreddieFree will arrive in 2011.

Schafer will be squeezed in there somewhere, but he’s now almost an afterthought after his forgettable 2009. I believe he’ll still be a very good ML’er, but what do I know? Plus, I also think we’ll see an OF signing or trade for 2010, so Schafer will most likely have a the whole 2010 season in AAA.

I firmly believe JHey will be given every opportunity to win the RF job this spring though. Why else would they be so careful with him this fall? I understand he’s had relatively few AB’s above high A ball, but the kid by all accounts is advanced beyond his years.

And don’t even compare it to rushing FrenchVanilla. Jeffrey was pressed into duty due to injury and a lack of OF’s not named Mondesi. JHey will flat out win the job.

Hi, Ber. Type A only matters if Boston offers him arb, which is not very likely.

I saw someone somewhere else ask the question, “Why would you want an older guy coming off surgery as your closer.”

I thought, what was Soriano? What was Gonzo? Both were fresh off surgery. And while maybe not as old as Wagner, also not as successful.

Unfortunately, it’s not a great year for OF’s, 1B’s or closers. You gotta get what’s available.

Still think LaRoche is back…3 years guaranteed money doesn’t mean Adam’s hear for three years, but most likely for two. No sense having the best rotation in baseball if the defense can’t match it. There is a price to pay, one way or t’other.

Closer could be Lowe…the combo of Soriano and Gonzo being, uh, gonzo is close to Lowe’s $$, so a wash. And, Moylan can close to, in the right match-ups. Still, if Wagner comes cheap, you might have to take a ‘sniff’.

V, it’s interesting about Wagner. He’ll be 39 in July. He made 10 Mil last year. How much of a cut is he willing to take???
A lot of people(Ok, Red Sox fans at least) seem to think
Papelbon will be traded. IF that happens, do we want him?? Would they rather risk Wagner as a closer, and slowly move Josh Bard of the easy 100 MPH heat in the role???
They had about 20 good starters at the beginning of last year, and ended up counting on Paul Byrd at the end of the season.
The Sox got knocked out of the playoffs early. And are watching their hated rivals play in the W.S. with a very good chance of winning it.
“They” are not going to play it safe this offseason. The Sox didn’t get C.C., A.J, or Tex, and it cost them. They have money to burn. Giving Wagner 8-10 Mil would not be a big deal.
Not saying “they” will….but they could….veeery interesting offseason, says I.

Still, if Wagner comes cheap, you might have to take a ’sniff’.

    Agreed.

Wagner’s $10MM was the last year of a the multi he signed in his prime. Coming off of his surgery, he’ll be lucky to get half of that, and surely won’t get more than 1 year guaranteed… maybe a 2nd year option.

As Salty said, I think they’ll at least give it a “sniff”. If it looks like it’ll be too pricey, they’ll move on.

There is some chatter about the Pirates’ Matt Capps, but he looked kinda like Matt Crapps toward the end of last season. But then again, I’d probably lose my edge, too, on the team of perpetual rebuilding. Might be interesting. Maybe they’ll take JoJo off our hands. He looked halfway decent at AAA after looking like crap early. Maybe half-crap for half-crap, huh?

My gut still sees Adam in those hideous orange and blue unis.

Pitcher Scott Proctor signs with Atlanta Braves

Proctor has reached an agreement with the Atlanta Braves on a one-year contract for the 2010 season, according to Proctor’s agent Mark Rodgers.

Proctor was released by the Florida Marlins in October after missing the entire 2009 season because of Tommy John surgery on his right elbow.

“The Braves were very aggressive in their pursuit of Scott,” Rodgers said Wednesday “They made it clear from the day the Marlins’ released Scott that they had a strong interest in signing him to help improve their bullpen. It was obvious to me that the Braves appreciate Scott’s track record with the Yankees and Dodgers. I am confident that Atlanta’s needs in the bullpen best matched up with Scott’s abilities.”

Rodgers explained that Proctor’s deal with Atlanta was a “split contract.” That means Proctor will sign a minor league contract that includes both a minor league salary and a major league salary. Terms of the contract were not released by Rodgers. However, Rodgers did say that it is a deal similar to what Proctor had with Florida Marlins for 2009 — that was a one-year contract worth $750,000 that included $250,000 in incentives. Rodgers said it has a base salary with the chance to earn bonuses based on Proctor’s performance at the major league level.

“The Braves fully understand that Scott is still rehabilitating from Tommy John surgery. We were looking for a club that would not rush his recovery. The Braves are that team. We are on the same page with Atlanta; they will be patient with Scott and let the recovery process proceed naturally. For the Braves and Scott that is a win-win situation, a patient approach for a full and successful comeback.”

Proctor, 32, appeared in 83 games with the Yankees in 2006 and 83 more for the Yankees and Dodgers combined in 2007. In five seasons, he has appeared in 262 games, pitched 297 innings and has a 4.42 ERA.

According to Tim Dierkes of MLBTR: Proctor would “have to spend all but about 21 days on the 25-man to qualify as a free agent after 2010.” He’ll probably need all of April in the minors, meaning the Braves could retain Proctor for 2011 as an arbitration-eligible player if he has a successful ’09 campaign.

According to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cardinals released righty Brad Thompson today. The arbitration-eligible Thompson would’ve been a likely non-tender in mid-December anyway.

Thompson, 28 in January, posted a 4.84 ERA in 80 innings this year (eight starts, 24 relief appearances). He’s typically shown strong control and home run prevention but a weak strikeout rate. His best asset is his ability to get groundballs – 52.7% of the time this year. If Thompson has a successful ’10 season for his new club, that team could elect to retain him for ’11 as an arbitration-eligible player.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see Frank in in this guy as well…

The base commander at Fort Hood says soldiers who witnessed a shooting rampagethat left 13 people dead reported that the gunman shouted “Allahu Akbar!” before opening fire at the Texas post.

Lt. Gen. Robert Cone told NBC’s “Today” show on Friday that suspected shooter, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, made the comment, which is Arabic for “God is great!” before the rampage Thursday that also left 30 people wounded.

At least six months ago, Hasan came to the attention of law enforcement officials because of Internet postings about suicide bombings and other threats, including posts that equated suicide bombers to soldiers who throw themselves on a grenade to save the lives of their comrades.

Still a bit confused about Wagner.

    From this article
    http://www.weei.com/sports/boston/red-sox/rob-bradford/2009/09/11/bradford-files-its-not-about-money-billy-wagner

“I know [the Red Sox] are going to offer me arbitration and of course I’m probably going to turn it down,” said the Red Sox reliever. “I have a million people telling me why would you turn down the option, or why would you do this or that. Well, I didn’t come in this game looking for money, I was just good enough to make some. If I’m going to go chasing money… I haven’t been wise with my money to begin with.”

Wagner understands what COULD happen, but because of the 38-year-old’s focus on what is right for him and what isn’t, much of it isn’t going to take place.

The Red Sox COULD pick up Wagner’s $8 million option for 2010, but won’t per a written agreement put in place when trading for the reliever.

So…we’d have to give up 2 picks then, right??? I’m reading that correctly, with my still sleepy eyes???
Really, who’s going to do that for a 38 yo closer??? Would the braves????

Officer who stopped Fort Hood rampage is Carolina Beach native

    By Shannan Bowen
    Shannan.Bowen@StarNewsOnline.com

    Published: Friday, November 6, 2009 at 11:21 a.m.

Those who know Kimberly Barbour Munley said they aren’t surprised the Carolina Beach native is the female civilian police officer credited for stopping the deadly shooting at Fort Hood, where 13 people were killed and several others injured.

Munley herself was injured, but she managed to shoot the gunman four times within three minutes of reported gunfire Thursday afternoon, Lt. Gen. Bob Cone said Friday morning.

“She was not afraid of anything,” said Wrightsville Beach Police Chief John Carey, who knew Munley when she worked for the department from 2000 to 2002.

“She is very small, but she had no fear,” he said.

Cone lauded Munley for encountering suspected gunman Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, who is hospitalized on a ventilator. “In an exchange of gunfire, she was wounded but managed to wound him four times,” Cone said. “It was an amazing and aggressive performance by this police officer.”

Munley arrived at the scene of Thursday’s shooting about seven minutes after it began, the head of Fort Hood’s emergency service said Friday.

Munley was outside the Soldier Readiness Center building when the shooter, who officials say is Hasan, emerged from the building gun in hand, said Chuck Medley, the director of emergency services at Fort Hood.

Hasan ran toward Munley, firing at her, Medley said. Munley returned fire with her pistol, hitting him.

Munley was shot in both legs and one wrist but is expected to make a full recovery, Medley said. He did not know how many times she was shot.

Hasan is reportedly in stable condition at an undisclosed hospital.

Medley said he visited Munley in the hospital early Friday and she was in good spirits.

“She’s got some surgeries (ahead) but she’s stable,” he said. “She’s the most upbeat injured person I’ve met.”

    He said the military is flying her husband, who is stationed at Fort Bragg, N.C., to see her soon. {Ft Bragg is about 90m west of here.}

Munley is a civilian police officer with the Department of the Army and serves as a SWAT team member and firearms instructor for the department, Medley said. He said she joined the police force in January 2008 after serving in the Army.
    (Whoa!)

Munley, 34, is the daughter of former Carolina Beach mayor Dennis Barbour. She grew up in Carolina Beach and graduated in 1993 from Hoggard High School.

Her father and stepmother, Wanda Barbour, were busy Friday afternoon trying to get a flight to Fort Hood so they could visit Munley in the hospital, where she remained in stable condition. They were also fielding calls from local and national media, including CNN’s Anderson Cooper and Inside Edition, according to workers at Island Tackle and Hardware in Carolina Beach, which is owned by the Barbours.

“We’re just so grateful and thankful to the Lord that she’s safe,” Wanda Barbour said. “Our hearts just ache for the loss of others, too, and hers, too. She’s still upset about that.”

Barbour said she and her husband found out Thursday afternoon Munley was involved in the attack, but they didn’t find out until later she was the one the top commander at Fort Hood credited with stopping the shooting.

Like others, Barbour wasn’t surprised it was Munley who helped stop the shooter. “When they said a female officer, a little part of me just knew,” she said.

“She is a very great person with a great spirit,” she said.

Ron Strickland, a retired teacher from Hoggard High School, coached Munley’s volleyball team and remembered her as a fearless athlete who was interested in law enforcement.

“This doesn’t surprise me at all,” Strickland said of Munley’s heroism. “She was always very matter of fact.”

Munley graduated in 1999 from Cape Fear Community College’s Basic Law Enforcement program, said David Hardin, public information officer for the college.

Carey said the Wrightsville Beach Police Department was Munley’s first law enforcement job. She was first employed March 1, 2000 as a reserve officer and later worked as a beach patrol officer and as an officer in the Uniform Patrol Division. She left the department in February 2002.

Munley received three letters of commendation and recognition for her performance as a Wrightsville Beach police officer.

Investigator Shaun Appler, Munley’s former partner at the Wrightsville Beach Police Department, described her as a “ball of fire” who always showed courage.

On one occasion, Appler got into a fight with a belligerent man he was attempting to arrest, and ended up rolling down a hill with the attacker. He said Munley came to his rescue, charging down the hill and jumping on the attacker’s back. The two officers then secured and arrested the man.

When the fight was over, Appler learned his gun had almost been pried off his belt by the suspect. He credits Munley with saving his life.

“From then on I called her Mighty Mouse,” said Appler. “She’s a little dynamo.”

When he heard the news Thursday night that a female police officer had taken down the Fort Hood shooter, he wondered if it had been Munley.

“I was shocked to learn it was Kim, but not surprised,” he said. “This sounds sappy and stupid, but she’s a fine example of law enforcement officers in America. She did an awesome job and we’re proud of her.”

A news release from the Wrightsville Beach Police Department offered condolences to the families of the soldiers killed and wounded in the shooting, and praised Munley.

On Friday afternoon, many people sent messages to Munley’s Twitter account, expressing gratitude and wishes for a speedy recovery.

Country singer Dierks Bentley, who appears with Munley in a photo on Munley’s Twitter page, posted the following message Friday on his own Twitter page: “was able to speak to sgt munley & pass along my prayers for a speedy recovering. she’s tough! and couldn’t be more nice or humble.real hero.” Bentley said he had performed July 4 at Fort Hood.

In the biography section of Munley’s Twitter account, she summed up her life with the following message: “I live a good life … a hard one, but I go to sleep peacefully @ night knowing that I may have made a difference in someone’s life.”

Thanks for that CL…. It is good that we have such good and courageous people to combat the evil in the world. She really is a true hero, a word that I think is bandied about far too loosely.

My take on all this is either the guy was a total whack job or a terrorist or a terrorist who is a total whack job. I am so tired of people hiding behind the mantra of being abused or teased or misunderstood. Actually, someone understands them pretty doggone well, it’s why they get poor performance reviews.

I have had to deal with a few nut cases myself and when they started the threats I have simply have told them they were reinforcing my perceptions of their character. Only had one guy who really scared me but I would never let on to him that he worried me. I just started carrying a bigger gun….

Now baseball…. A lot of conjecture about who will be the Braves’ closer next season. I just hope the organization does not try to get by on the cheap…. No doubt, Atlanta won’t be fielding a team on a par salary wise with the Red Sox or the Yankees but I would hate to think they would just settle for a team that was almost go enough. I accept the realities of not having an unlimited budget but I hate compromising. I am thinking the Mets are going to be a lot better next year and I know the Phillies will be looking to bolster their pitching staff.

George W. Bush Secretly Visits Fort Hood Victims

The Bushes entered and departed the sprawling military facility in secret, having told the base commander they did not want press coverage of their visit, a source told Fox News.

Former President George W. Bush and his wife Laura secretly visited Fort Hood last night and spent “considerable time” consoling those who were wounded in Thursday’s shooting spree, Fox News has learned.

The Bushes entered and departed the sprawling military facility in secret, having told the base commander they did not want press coverage of their visit, a source told Fox News.

The couple was described as “deeply concerned” about military families on Fort Hood after Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan allegedly opened fire on soldiers and civilians, killing 13 and wounding 38.

The Bushes, who have a 1,600-acre property known as Prairie Chapel Ranch less than 30 miles from Fort Hood in central Texas, spent between one and two hours visiting the wounded and their families.

“I accept the realities of not having an unlimited budget but I hate compromising.”

Amen Gil, Amen to that. The Cards found relying on Ryan Frankin was ok during the season, but not during the playoffs.
I saw where the guy from MLB trade rumors had a story where Mariano Rivera said he’d like to pitch for 5 more years, and how he said it’s hard to justify 15 Mil for a closer, but if anyone was worth it, it was Mariano. While he was complimenting him, there does seem to be an attitude of late that the closers role is overrated. Well…imagine if we had had him instead of Wickman, Chris Reitsma, or Danny Kolb??? Those were mainly scrap heap kind of guys(Well, Wickman wasn’t too bad for awhile)
Teams that win, teams that go deep, have much better than average closers. I’d take my chances with Soriano, Gonzo, or even Wagner….but I fear, “we shall fill the position from within.” Then we have a bullpen by committee that blows a save every 4th or 5th game, then give up too much to get a closer…and say once again, gee, too bad we missed the wildcard by 5 games….

I think Wickman got disgusted with the way Bobby used him. I remember reading a comment where he said (to the effect) “I’m a CLOSER. I close games.” Bobby didn’t think that way.

CL, thats true. I still remember Bobby using him in Colorado when it was painfully clear his sinker didn’t work there. Didn’t he run him out there twice and he blew both games???
Then we heard stuff later that made it sound like Wickman was a jerk…and he never played for anyone else…which is funny considering how desperate teams get for relievers.

And V, I keep forgetting to chime in about Jermaine Dye. I keep hearing how he’s a bad outfielder, and there may be some stats that show that…but, he’s been a right fielder, in a pretty big park. I’d imagine their right field is larger than ours. Just guessing though.
But, I “tivo” with my DVR baseball tonight all season long, and I saw him make a lot of good catches, running into the fence, diving…things I never saw G.A. do.
Now, you can’t judge a guy on his spectacular plays,
he may not do as well coming in. But, I think he’s got a good arm, and if he’s in left, he would be at least as good as G.A. both in the field, and at the plate. His 44 homer season skews things a bit, but he has averaged 32 homers the past 5 years. He will see more fastballs in the NL. And we have a much more potent(potentially speaking) offense than the Sox did last year. They really were terrible. No one even drove in 90 runs. Put Dye in Left, and bat him cleanup, with Mac behind him, and I think that’s a good lineup. And really, who else is there that’s going to do better, not named Bay or Holliday???

What could be so wrong with treating them as individuals and dealing with them on a case-by-case basis?

Ken Rosenthal blogging from the GM meetings:

Braves pondering other options besides LaRoche — 4:04 p.m.

While the Braves are interested in re-signing first baseman Adam LaRoche, they plan to explore other possibilities on the trade and free-agent markets.

Club officials are concerned about LaRoche’s history of poor performance in the first half of seasons. They do not want to overpay LaRoche and then regret it.

The Braves are looking for offense, but some of their solutions should come from within.

The team expects Chipper Jones to rebound and Yunel Escobar to continue improving. Nate McLouth learned he needed contact lenses at the end of the season and top outfield prospect Jason Heyward, who figures to join the team at some point in 2010, possesses game-changing ability.

First I have heard of anything related to N8…

Thanks for the list V! Interesting. Sometimes I think those folks throw a dart at a wall and if it hits A, the guy is a A, and if it hits B, he’s a B.
Mark DeRosa has hit about .290 the past 2 years. And has played the majority of his games(about 90+ each years) at 2nd. Almost 80 RBI’s each years. But, he’s a B. Weird. Good for us though!

Marlon Byrd – Type B. Mike Cameron – Type B. That seems like a no brainer, IF that was a direction we were going to go, Byrd. We really don’t need another 37 year old, do we??? Sure seems to hit us though.

Hmm, if only we knew what Heyward was capable of. Put him in right, Nate in Left, and Byrd in Center(or vise versa) That sounds like a pretty good line-up. But, is that really good enough to beat the Phils???

Gil, I keep thinking that 13 Americans would be alive today if someone had had the guts to report him for the things he said, argued about and/or advocated. “Too scared to report a muslim” even though he was openly anti-American and advocated the murder of Americans.

When Hasan asked a fellow muslim about his going overseas and having to fight other muslims, the other guy said, “Muslims are fighting muslims throughout the middle east. Why would you think your military service would be any different?”

Buying powerful handguns as far back as last August, emptying his apartment, giving away his belongings, leaving farewell messages on friends’ answering machines – yep, sounds pretty pre-meditated to me.

I don’t see that muslims have any qualms about bombing, murdering or mutilating other muslims, including little children.

On LaRoche’s oft reported slow starts… Maybe he should play winter ball to get him up to speed early. I think the real reason is because the pitchers are fresher in the spring. They don’t develop tired arm syndrome until July, about the same time old Rochie hits his stride.

Interesting stat-head comparison of Jason Bay and Mike Cameron.

    http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/bay-vs-cameron/

As you all know, I really like Mike Cameron, just not as the cleanup hitter we need. But failing the mythical and elusive RH cleanup hitting bopper, Mike Cameron would be a nice signing. He could probably be had for a very affordable 1 year deal. He still plays a very good CF, and would almost certainly be a perfect placeholder for Jordan Schafer, allowing N8 to move to LF and provide some stability in that position for this year and beyond.

And again, while not the classic bopper, Cameron does hit righty and he did hit 24 jacks last season.

The key, to me, is that we would need to fill the cleanup void at 1B.

    Envision this:

    1. N8, LF
    2. Prado, 2B
    3. Chipper, 3B
    4. 1B
    5. Mac, C
    6. Yunel, SS
    7. Cameron, CF
    8. Diaz, RF

    Not bad…

And with JHey on the way, it looks even better:

    1. N8, LF
    2. Prado, 2B
    3. Chipper, 3B
    4. 1B
    5. Mac, C
    6. JHey, RF
    7. Yunel, SS
    8. Cameron, CF

Still strong… as long as you have that power source at 1B.

Now, to make this post even longer, lets look at Cameron with LaRoche at 1B:

    1. N8, LF
    2. Prado, 2B
    3. Yunel, SS
    4. Chipper, 3B
    5. Mac, C
    6. JHey, RF
    7. Rochey, 1B
    8. Cameron, CF

Yeah, yeah… I know… Chipper doesn’t want to hit 4th. Guess what? If he’s still around in 2011, he won’t be 3rd anyway, JHey will.

I’ll tell you what I’d like to see, and it won’t happen. I’d like to see Chipper actually take some of his offseason and get out of the woods and into the gym. I’d like to see him get a little stronger and move across the diamond to 1B.

I’d like to see the Braves go out and snatch Mark DeRosa out of the main crosshairs of Philly, and plant him at 3B. And then sign Cameron.

Now you still have a few $$$ left to re-sign Gonzo to close.

    My lineup, with ’09 numbers:

    1. N8, LF (L) .257/.354/.419, 11 HR, 36 RBI
    2. Prado, 2B (R) .307/.358/.464, 11 HR, 49 RBI
    3. JHey, RF (L) .323/.408/.505, 17 HR, 63 RBI (99 games in A, AA & AAA)
    4. Chipper, 1B (S) .264/.388/.430, 18 HR, 71 RBI
    5. Mac, C (L) .281/.349/.486, 21 HR, 94 RBI
    6. Yunel, SS (R) .299/.377/.436, 14 HR, 76 RBI
    7. DeRo, 3B (R) .228/.291/.405, 23 HR, 78 RBI
    8. Cameron, CF (R) .250/.342/.452, 24 HR, 70 RBI

There’s no 30 HR guy, and Chipper bats cleanup against his will, but there’s alot of productivity from 1-8.

And with JHey batting 3rd with Chipper behind him, he ought to see some good pitches to hit.

Affordable and productive. Also, each of them plays at least average to above average defensively.

Honestly, folks, I think that lineup would win.

    But that’s just me…

Raisins, I like Heyward’s upside but I am not quite ready to bet the farm on him yet. I have not forgotten all the hype on a few other “can’t miss” type out there. Truth is, it often is another team who reaps the rewards of Braves’ rookies. Adam Wainwright come to mind pretty quickly.

We are all on a budget. Yep, pretty frustrating not to be able to spend like Congress without regard to the consequences. Still, the Braves have a pretty good core of players right now. Imagine how good this team could be if Kelly Johnson had actually panned out.

So, the Braves could sign a guy like Cantu and still have a little breathing room. Would he be better than Adam? Doubt it. With some of the wild throws made in the direction of firstbase by Escobar and Chipper, it is pretty evident the Braves need a firstbaseman who possesses some prowess with a glove.

I think Schafer will make a return next season but perhaps the expectation will not be so high. An outfield of Schefer, Heyward and McLouth could cover some ground but would tend to make the lineup a bit lefty heavy… All of them have some pop and speed.

One of the big questions of the winter is whether the Braves will trade right-hander Javier Vazquez for a hitter.

Vazquez’s contract allows him to veto deals to the NL West and AL West. And the Braves, before compromising their starting pitching depth, must weigh whether they can get a strong enough bat in return.

Twins right fielder Michael Cuddyer is not available, but that’s the type of slugger the Braves likely would want for Vazquez, who went 15-10 with a 2.87 ERA last season. Trading Vazquez for say, a slightly above-average hitter and Class AA prospect would make little sense.

Another option for the Braves would be to trade right-hander Kenshin Kawakami for a lesser hitter.

Agreed, Gil. And I believe eventually that Jordan Schafer will put up the kind of numbers very comparable to Cameron. I’m just not so sure he’ll be ready in 2010 given that he missed 50 games in 2008, and half a season in 2009.

That said, who thought he’d be ready last spring when he easily won the CF job after missing those 50 games in ’08? So who knows?

(By the way, I also buy into the wrist injury as the most significant reason for his struggles last year. I think the kid is gonna be a solid player.)

The next question is, will Wren/Cox go into a season with 2 rookies in the OF being counted on to produce? Not so sure, but one thing is for certain… JHey has proven that he defies all conventional logic.

Heck, I have Cameron slotted at the #8 spot anyway…

My gut tells me that we will try to fill our power need at 1B, not in the OF. I think it’ll be a guy that we haven’t discussed. Just a gut feeling… nothing tangible to base it on…

Another option for the Braves would be to trade right-hander Kenshin Kawakami for a lesser hitter.

    Braves don’t need a ‘lesser hitter’…the need a ‘bopper hitter’…keep KK.

    So, CL, how’s the shoulder?

I thought about you yesterday when my right shoulder, which I had repaired almost 20 years ago, began hurting for no apparent reason. I can think of nothing I have done to aggravate it. Worse, today I can hardly lift my right arm, and the constant ache is pretty intense. Yesterday it was a “little sore” when I moved it a certain way; today it is a sharp ache just hangin’.

Guess I won’t be signing any long term deals this winter.

Really sorry to hear that, Raisins!

sigh – overall, the pain level is less than it was before surgery and I have a little more use of it than before surgery – so from that standpoint I’d guess you could say it was successful.

However, the pain is much more than I expected at this point after surgery (9 months) and I have less use out of it than I expected.

Would I do it again? NO! Not unless I had absolutely NO other choice and simply couldn’t live with it anymore. Then, I MIGHT consider it.

But, to be fair, I had to do things at an early stage after surgery that probably kept it from healing properly – lifting Mother’s heavy wheelchair in and out of the trunk, etc.

Ken Rosenthal’s live blog from the GM meetings:

Smoltz wants to keep playing — 3:49 p.m.

It’s official — John Smoltz intends to play next season.

Smoltz, 42, met with his agents on Tuesday and informed them of his desire to extend his 22-year career.

Smoltz, a free agent, is open to starting or relieving, according to a source with knowledge of his thinking.

He does not have a specific team in mind, but figures to again end up in the National League.

Smoltz signed a free-agent contract with the Red Sox last winter but was released after going 2-5 with an 8.32 ERA in eight starts.

He then signed with the Cardinals and performed much better, going 1-3 with a 4.26 ERA in seven starts.

Good luck, Johnny, but there comes a time when every player has to hang up the spikes. You shoulda done it after ’08.

Shoulder pain likely bursitis, heat/cold and aspirin. If not better after a couple of days… well, cortisone directly in the hurt should do the trick. You don’t even want to think about the alternative.

CL, Josie said a year…. And that was with PT

As for me. I sometimes think every joint is aching… I try not to be around people when I a feeling bad, I only take it out on them… You should have heard me rail against Pelosi the other night… Or maybe not…

A report on Fox today said cursing is good for you… If that is true then I should be in great shape.

I managed to replace the mower belt on one of the John Deere mowers today. I fought with it for over an hour trying to replace the broken belt with a spare I had hanging in the barn. When I finally went to the dealer, he said there were two belts for that model, one was an inch shorter than the other… Guess which one I had.

Anyway, I am hoping the Braves will resign LaRoche and they can bring Freddie Freeman along without placing undue pressure on him. I don’t know how much Rochie will command but we are not looking at Ryan Howard or Prince Fielder numbers when it come to cost. I still say Cantu is an option but not the defensive plus that Adam is, still, Cantu can also play third.

I have not even begun to think about the bullpen. Way too early I suppose. Too bad Smoltzie burn his bridges… I think….

    According to MLB.com:

Free-agent first baseman Russell Branyan has rejected a one-year offer from the Mariners and though he still hopes to return to Seattle next season, he said he would rather test the market than settle for anything less than a two-year deal.

“I’m not a bad guy, not a selfish guy,” he said from his offseason home. “I don’t know if there is a two- or three-year deal out there for me, but I would like to have more than a one-year deal. I don’t want another one-and-done [contract].”

Are the M’s just posturing by discussing Overbay, or are they firm in not offering 2 for Branyan. Would you offer 2 to Branyan to play 1B here?

Interesting note from Mark Bowman regarding last offseason:

While waiting to see if [Jake] Peavy would provide the Padres the OK to attempt to send him to Atlanta, the Braves held off on their attempt to obtain Nick Swisher from the White Sox. The Yankees acquired [Nick] Swisher on Nov. 13 and 24 hours later, Braves GM Frank Wren revealed that he was no longer actively pursuing Peavy.

As the Braves saw their left fielders combine to hit .270 with 17 homers, 70 RBIs and a .725 OPS this year, Swisher was hitting .249 with 29 homers, 82 RBIs and an .869 OPS for the world champions.

More Bowman on the Braves pitching excess:

Early indications are the Braves believe that the Yankees or Angels might be willing to deal for [Derek] Lowe. Before doing this, the Yankees will make a run for the younger [John] Lackey, whose financial demands will determine whether the Angels attempt to bring him back to continue his role as their ace.

If Lackey does exit Southern California, there is a belief that the Angels would then attempt to work a trade for the Blue Jays to acquire Roy Halladay, who will cost just $750,000 more than Lowe next year.

This obviously could further complicate things for the Braves, who are looking to move one of these starters to create the financial flexibility to take care of some of their other roster needs — first baseman, closer and outfielder.

So while the Braves would like the opportunity to keep [Javier] Vazquez, they may find that they have to deal him before paying the consequences of the waiting game that will transpire as they wait to see whether there will be a team that is willing to trade for Lowe.

If the Braves are able to deal Lowe, then they are expected to begin seriously discussing the possibility of offering Vazquez an extension that would keep him in Atlanta beyond the 2010 season.

Vazquez found a comfort zone in Atlanta and he has made it known multiple times that he doesn’t want to be traded. But for now, like the rest of us, he finds himself simply playing the waiting game.

A motorist on I-85 near Jefferson hit and killed a large black bear on Sunday. When officials from the Department of Natural Resources went to the scene to remove the bear, someone had stolen the body.

Someone driving a SUV struck the bear around 8 p.m. on Sunday at Exit 137 on I-85. The Jefferson Police Department was called to the accident scene.

The bear had died and the DNR was called to come and remove the body. When DNR officials arrived Monday morning, the bear’s body was gone.

According to DNR officials, it is a violation of state law to be in possession of a bear or bear parts.

    Ken Rosenthal:

    Braves weighing second-tier sluggers — 6:39 a.m.

In the Braves’ perfect world, they would obtain a right-handed slugger in his prime, someone like Twins right fielder Michael Cuddyer, who is not available.

Such players are in short supply, and the Braves are unlikely to make runs at the top free-agent hitters, Matt Holliday and Jason Bay.

Instead, they are kicking around a variety of lesser options, including the following:

Marlon Byrd, free agent: Coming off a career-high 20-homer, 89-RBI season, he is expected to be targeted by the Cubs, who could reunite him with Rudy Jaramillo, his hitting coach from the Rangers.

Xavier Nady, free agent: The Braves tried to acquire him when he was with the Pirates, but Nady is more of a complementary type than a middle-of-the-order threat, and is coming off his second Tommy John surgery.

Mike Cameron, free agent: Lives in Atlanta, wants to play in Atlanta, but is not high on the Braves’ list of priorities.

Dan Uggla, Marlins. Like the Red Sox, the Braves have pondered the idea of trading for the second baseman and playing him in left field.

David DeJesus, Royals: Not right-handed and not a slugger, but a player the Braves have liked in the past.

I’ll say this much… Rosenthal pulls alot of stuff from his nether regions. I take most of what he writes with a grain of salt.

    So, that said…

I’ll be surprised if the Braves look at Nady, and especially DeJesus, unless they swing a surprise deal for a bopper at 1B beforehand. I think they may kick the tires on Byrd, but the Rangers will almost certainly keep him. Cameron? I like him, but I think he may fall into the same category as Nady. Uggla? The Marlins simply won’t trade him within the division without a premium in return. Frank won’t do that.

I’ll predict that none of those names appear on the back of a Braves jersey in 2010. Well… maybe Cameron. But I doubt it.

It certainly now puts the Braves in a very firm trading position having 6 bona fide starters under contractual control.

1:19pm: The Giants and Orioles are showing the most interest in Dan Uggla, according to Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports. Those clubs would move Uggla to third base, a position he hasn’t played since 2005 in the minors. The writers add that the Red Sox have inquired, with an eye on using Uggla in left field. Uggla played 20 games in the outfield in Double A in ’04. Rosenthal and Morosi add that an Uggla trade would compel the Marlins to retain Jorge Cantu.

The Braves had notions toward Nick Swisher last year. The Yankees took him instead.

The Yanks have been mentioned as possibly interested in Derek Lowe.

Swisher, while not the classic bopper, would still give you 25+ HR’s, and could play either OF or 1B, giving the Braves more flexibility in their search for power.

    Thoughts?

Final brief thought on the Uggla matter… I don’t see the Braves trading much from their farm system – certainly not any of the real quality. Their trades this off season will be from the surplus of starters, and possibly of KJ. The Marlins will demand top prospects.

    That’s really it, IMO.

If they fill their OF, 1B or ‘pen needs through trade, it;ll have to be from Lowe/KK/JV.

The rest will come from a relatively thin FA market.

Gil, about the CMA…was the African American guy Darius Rucker??? He was actually in the early 90’s band(thought it was the 80s, but I was wrong) Hootie and the Blowfish, which while pop, really had a country sound.
Like in this song, Hold My Hand.

But, you may be talking about 50 Cent or somethin’ being on the show…just don’t know. But I did hear Darius won best new Artist.

Oh, I forgot. Gil, sorry you are not feeling well!
Here is my other email (Ber, you know better than to post your email on a BLOG!!! If I can find the key, you get one hour in the doghouse! love, CL) Its the free one I have had for years. I love the spam I get there, perhaps now I will get even more! 😉
the one we get from that teeny tiny company AT&T. Well, that one doesn’t work so hot. Since they change the email from att.net to bellsouth.net. They never have been able to fix it. Well, it worked correctly for a few months, then it started to do that trick.

    SI.com’s Jon Heyman:

Reliever Mike Gonzalez appears very popular in the free-agent market. There are loads of bullpen options, but he can set up, he can close and he’s left-handed, making him about the most desirable of the lot.

Well, feeling better after a nap and some concoction served up by Miss Josie, I am not sure what was in it but I know better than to ask too many questions.

The wind is not too strong right now but I know we lost a couple of trees today. I can’t see them from the house but I know they fell because we felt the house shake when they ht the ground. Thank goodness for the tractor. I had a couple of big ones fall across our trail behind the house a month ago and nothing like a front end loader to make short work of moving them. Best investment I made after moving here.

“When the wind blows for the east, the weather is not fit for man nor beast”….

    And baseball… Games started yet?

I really would like to attend some spring training games this year but I am cheap. I don’t think I should have to pay major league prices to watch minor league players. If I wanted to do that I could drive up to DC to watch the Nationals play….

    from email: (credit Ber)

    The economy is so bad…

That I got a pre-declined credit card in the mail.

I ordered a burger at McDonalds and the kid behind the counter asked, “Can you afford fries with that?”

If the bank returns your check marked “Insufficient Funds,” you call them and ask if they meant you or them.

Hot Wheels and Matchbox stocks are trading higher than GM.

Parents in Beverly Hills fired their nannies and learned their children’s names.

A truckload of Americans was caught sneaking into Mexico.

Dick Cheney took his stockbroker hunting.

Motel Six won’t leave the light on anymore.

The Mafia is laying off judges.

    Exxon-Mobil laid off 25 Congressmen.

    And finally…

Congress says they are looking into this Bernard Madoff scandal. Oh Great!! The guy who made $50 Billion disappear is being investigated by the people who made $1.5 Trillion disappear!

I doubt he meant Darius, Ber, he never did anything remotely like rap. Always liked Hootie & the Blowfish myself. IIRC they’re from SC. Clemson maybe?

Ber, my oldest car was a ’50 Plymouth. It was one of those 55 MPH cars. You know, the ones that say “cut it out” when you go 56… One of the best driving cars I ever owned but absolutely hated rain. It would leave me stranded if a rain cloud appeared in the sky or a dog whizzed on the tire.

It was in desperate need of a ring job. For the life of me, I cannot remember what happened to that car now. I think I may have traded it for an eight track tape player….

Actually feeling better this morning. If it will ever stop raining I am sure my mood will improve even more. All this water is depressing. The dogs keep looking at me like it’s my fault….

Just read that the Angels are talking to Detroit about Curtis Granderson, and would likely move Juan Rivera if the trade materialized.

Juan Rivera? We talked alot about him last year.

Let’s take a quick peak at his ’09 numbers:

    .287/.332/.478, 25 HR’s, 88 RBI

Maybe they could use Lowe to replace Lackey?

OK, I’m dreaming again… too many moving parts.

Yes Rasins, the Lowe for Rivera trade would make too much sense for too many people… After all, it’s baseball. Why make a good trade when you can swing a Len Barker for two all-stars type deal….

Uh, you folks should realize that I have been conditioned to think owners like the Deadskin’s Dan Snyder is a better judge of talent that say a Joe Gibbs… Let’s see now, how many coaches have the “Skins had now since the Snyder Era?

Sigh… it’s raining again… We had a brief respite and I got all excited and got dressed to go to the store… Bah…. No wonder all those folks in the Northwest are suicidal….
